Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 21: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Elevator and Grain Interests; May 15, 1903 The attempt at Springfield to legalize trading in privileges failed on May 2, when the enacting clause of the bill was stricken out. Mr. Arrand, who fathered the bill to repeal the present legal inhibition of such trading, said that the Chicago Board of Trade finds that at this particular time it must have legislation of this character in order that it may successfully compete with institutions of a like character in adjoining states, and for that reason a large volume of busi ness goes into those states that properly belongs to Illinois. The removal of present restraints would, he contended, greatly increase the volume of busi ness of the Board of Trade, and increase the clerical force to the extent of men. Revenue would be provided for by an arbitrary charge of a few cents per bushel lot of grain cleared. It has been estimated that a charge of 10 cents per 10, 000 bushels of grain cleared would bring in about in a year, a sum fully sufficient to pay run ning expenses and a margin for reserve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 10: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Elevator and Grain Interests; June 15, 1892 The high and low track, illustrated herewith, another relic of a forgotten age, is also used at a number of points and even at Chicago several roads use this shiftless ar rangement for transferring grain. As with the track on the level it is generally more expensive to the shipper than to the carrier. It is the duty of the receiver's associations at the dif f ercut terminals to do everything in their power to induce railroad companies to erect regular transfer elevators with the scales upon the ground floor and erected upon a stone foundation. By such a house gra'n can be cheaply and quickly transferred without loss of grain, and correct weights can be obtained. As receivers lack persistence the shippers can do much toward bringing about a change by lending their influence in behalf of modern transfer facilities, the adoption of which would redound more to their interests than to the interests of any others con useted with the grain trade. All elevators have been filled since last November, since which time farmers have been compelled to build their own storehouses, and at almost every town along the line of the Canadian Pacific there are hundreds of rough board shanties built by farmers to store their grain. At Indian Head, the largest market in that territory, about bushels of last year's crop have been mar hetea, and there still remain about bushels in store and in farmers' hands at that place.
