In this research paper I will analyse the main characters of “Tortilla Flat” and compare them to the American dream. First of all I will explain what the American dream really is. Afterwards I will give a short summary of the plot of the book and an overview of the historical background. Then I will show the western frontier in the book, which is also part of the American dream. After that I will analyse the main characters of "Tortilla Flat": Women, Torelli and the paisanos. Finally I will give a short conclusion.

Fourth, the author visits upon why sanctions to white-collar offenders should be proportionate to sanctions given to street offenders who committed similar offenses, but he also focuses on how the justice system can do a better job of meeting the needs of individual victims and the community by finding ways to restore the community rather than simply looking for ways to harm offenders. The book is intended for criminal justice professionals, academics, and researchers who want to better understand the role of the criminal justice system in punishing all types of offenders. It is also intended for use in criminal justice, corrections, sociology, and white-collar courses exploring the punishment of elite offenders. Through promoting understanding about this aspect of the response to white-collar misconduct, it is hoped that this book will help improve the whole justice system's response to these offenses.

Ren Girard proposes that the Gospels present Jesus as a scapegoat whose innocent death exposes how humans have always created scapegoats. This revelation should have cured societal scapegoating, yet those who claim to live by the Gospels have missed that message. They continue to scapegoat and remain blind to the suffering of scapegoats in modern life. Christians today tend to read the New Testament as victors, not as victims. The teachings and actions of Jesus thus lose much of their subversive significance. The Gospels become one harmonized story about individual salvation rather than distinct representations of Jesus's revolutionary work on behalf of victims. Scapegoats revisits the Gospel narratives with the understanding that they tell scapegoats' stories, and that through those stories the kingdom of God is revealed. Bashaw goes beyond Girard's arguments to show that Jesus's whole public ministry (not only his death) combats the marginalization of victims.
