Book excerpt: This is a fantasy adventure and fun story about Quincy, a young male squirrel born in Boston, who carries an important microchip planted into his head and a DNA altering solution injected into his body, as part of a highly sophisticated genetic engineering work by a mad professor. These caused him to grow wings, with which he decided to fly. Unfortunately he found himself a very much prized fugitive, wanted by the mad professor, super big powers, intelligence organisations and various crooked people. Without him knowing it, the planted chips accumulate and carry information of immense monetary and strategic values, which are useful for future wars. His travel took him around the world, through San Francisco, Hong Kong, Borneo, China, Russia, India, Kenya, Tunisia, and France, going through death defying adventures. Along his journey he met good people, bad people, and learnt that the world is far from the comfort of the Boston garden. In the jungle of Borneo he saw the real life of animals in the wild, and in Southeast Asia and Africa he witnessed illegal wildlife smuggling. But when stranded in Marseille, France he found himself madly in love with a French squirrel, Layla. Together they have to find a way to get home, away from the mad professor who would do anything to get back his experimental animal, and the many crooked people and criminal organisations bent on capturing him alive for their own greed. How will he get home to Boston, to save himself and to save the humankind, across the thousand miles of the deep Atlantic Ocean?

This delightful series of adventures includes necessary lessons for skills the young ones will need as adults, and endless fun and excitement as Shelby explores the world around him. Shelby hiccups and stutters when he is upset or nervous, trouble finds him much too easily, and growing up is not what he wants to do. The forest provides him with many good friends, but when their beloved meadow is changed forever they all move to the woods beside a farm, where Shelby meets and learns about farm animals, a whole new experience. The stories relate loosely to the realities of wild Flying Squirrels, but liberal poetic licence allows much more to happen. SHELBY F. SQUIRREL is the perfect introduction to learning more about real Flying Squirrels, one of Nature's very little-known and most amazing creatures. The SHELBY F SQUIRREL Series As your child grows, so does Shelby! BOOK 1 The Complete Adventures of SHELBY F. SQUIRREL and Friends Age 4-10 (Shelby is 3 months old to 2 years) BOOK 2 The Great FOREST CAPER Age 8-11 (Shelby is an adolescent) BOOK 3 Where is Virginia? Book excerpt: Amelia is 14 years old. In many ways, she is your average American teenager: since she was three years old, she has been her mother's muse, and the subject of her photographs. However, not every mom is a world-class photographer with a predilection for photographing animals. And it's not every teenager who has portraits of herself with elephants, llamas, ponies, tigers, kangaroos, chimpanzees and endless dogs, cats, and other animals--portraits that hang in the collections of major art museums around the world. Amelia and the Animals is Robin Schwartz's second monograph featuring this collaborative series dedicated to documenting her and Amelia's adventures among the animals. As Schwartz puts it, "Photography is a means for Amelia to meet animals. Until recently, she took these opportunities for granted. She didn't realize how unusual her encounters were until everyone started to tell her how lucky she was to meet so many animals." Nonetheless, these images are more than documents of Amelia and her rapport with animals; they offer a meditation on the nature of interspecies communication and serve as evidence of a shared mother-daughter journey into invented worlds. Robin Schwartz (born 1957) earned an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute, and her photographs are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, in New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany. She is an assistant professor of photography at William Paterson University and lives in New Jersey with her husband, Robert Forman, daughter, Amelia, and five companion animals.
