Our favorite activity has been reading aloud together and we''ve read hundreds of books including the entire Harry Potter series, all 13 Series of Unfortunate Events books, all Roald Dahl''s books, and much more. As she''s gotten older, we began making up short stories as well, some written out and others simply told and forgotten. With the advent of the coronavirus, Olivia came up with a bold new idea. That the two of us create an entire novel together. A fantasy novel like the ones we love with the twist that the heroes would be the two of us thrust into an out-of -this-world adventure. I''ve written four previous novels (they can be found on Amazon) but had not attempted a new one in many years. However, I thought it could be an amusing time-passer for us and I agreed. The fact that we were trapped inside like all of you made it seem a more than worthy enterprise. So for weeks we discussed ideas and characters until we had the framework of the book. I did most of the actual writing of the novel while she made many brilliant suggestions which resulted in many favorable changes. As it all came together, I realized something. This novel of ours was every bit as good (if not better) than anything else I had ever written. We decided when it was done to publish it on Amazon like my other four books. The book is a mix of the fantastical and the real. Olivia and I are the main characters but our personas in the book are quite different from our own. Facts about our lives are different. For example, Olivia decided it worked better if she was a bit older in the book than she is now. Some of the characters are real while others are complete fiction. The setting is our hometown of Valley Stream, NY and the park which features predominantly in the story is one we''ve walked through many times. Beyond that, we''ve decided to say nothing more about the separation of fantasy and reality. We''ll let you readers figure it out for yourselves. Writing this novel in collaboration with my niece has been the greatest experience of my life. It also makes a keepsake for us that we can treasure forever. It is now our pleasure to share it with you during this difficult time and hopefully take some of you to another world of humor and danger where magic and wonder are everywhere. We hope you''ll get lost in it and be half as transported as we were when we wrote it. That gives you the books background. The story is told in the first person by Olivia''s character so I''ll hand things over to her to give you a glimpse of the story you will find in the book. Then I''ll let her have the final word as she usually does. First off, ignore my Uncle. Everything in this story is true. It all started when me, my Uncle, and my best friend Quentin were watching a movie down in my Uncle''s basement when there was an explosion. A wall opened up and we found a mysterious book. The cover was solid oak and covered with magical illustrations but the inside was blank. Finding that book opened a doorway into our town that released the fairytales of Marcus Malkin, a forgotten writer of breathtaking skill. How do I know this. Simple. This past summer, I lived his stories and met his characters firsthand. Prepare yourselves for fire-breathing squirrels, a daring tightrope walker, an insane bike-riding harmonica player, a haunted playground, talking cats, a majestic tree king, amazing automatons, and a castle housing terrible secrets. But that is just the backdrop for the main story. a tale of 3 brothers who concocted a scheme to turn all the adults in my town into bloodthirsty monsters. We soon discovered we were the guardians of this tale. It was up to us to make sure it was told and to make it turn out right. If we failed, the tale would escape and go everywhere. Did we succeed? Read it and find out. Reject it at your peril. Tales need to be told.Olivia
