Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inebriate asylum movement of the 19th and early 20th century was guided by a dystopian vision which sought to incarcerate all drinkers until they were cured, and to incarcerate incurable inebriates for life. This plan to create a nationwide chain of state-run inebriate asylums to rival the insane asylums of the era, which was promoted by the American Association for the Cure of Inebriates, ended in abject failure. Few inebriate asylums were ever established, and those that were established did not last long. Many were shot through with political corruption and graft. Moreover, no state government was willing to pass a law to incarcerate drinkers indefinitely, perhaps for life. Most states never built an inebriate asylum or passed a law to commit inebriates to specialized inebriate institutions, for the few states which did pass such laws, the typical commitment was six months or one year. A rival movement of the same era sought to establish inebriate homes rather than asylums. Inebriate homes were run on the honor system and sought to cure with kindness and a client-centered approach which foreshadows Rogerian Therapy. Inebriate homes had more success than inebriate asylums; the Boston Washingtonian Home was in existence for more than a century. This book tells the story of the government-run and the non-profit addiction treatment facilities which were founded prior to the Repeal of Prohibition in 1933: inebriate asylums, homes, and farms, as well as the municipal narcotic clinics which dispensed morphine to addicts, the Federal Narcotic Farms at Lexington and Fort Worth, and the alcoholic ward at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. This book also discusses the close ties between the temperance movement and addiction treatment in the 19th and early 20th centuries and the automaton theory of inebriety, which presages today's hijacked brain theory. This book also discusses the genesis of the 12-step Minnesota Model at the State Inebriate Farm at Willmar, the introduction and disastrous ending of Synanon-based therapeutic communities at the Lexington Narcotic Farm, and the introduction of methadone programs at Bellevue and at the Boston Washingtonian Hospital. Groundbreaking studies of opiates, marijuana, barbiturates, alcohol, naloxone, and LSD conducted at the Lexington Narcotic Farm are also covered, as is the research at Bellevue Hospital on Korsakoff's Syndrome and the protective effect of vitamin B1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a single shot from a pistol small enough to conceal in his hand, John Wilkes Booth catapulted into history on the night of April 14, 1865. The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln stunned a nation that was just emerging from the chaos and calamity of the Civil War, and the president's untimely death altered the trajectory of postwar history. But to those who knew Booth, the event was even more shocking--for no one could have imagined that this fantastically gifted actor and well-liked man could commit such an atrocity. In Fortune's Fool, Terry Alford provides the first comprehensive look at the life of an enigmatic figure whose life has been overshadowed by his final, infamous act. Tracing Booth's story from his uncertain childhood in Maryland, characterized by a difficult relationship with his famous actor father, to his successful acting career on stages across the country, Alford offers a nuanced picture of Booth as a public figure, performer, and deeply troubled man. Despite the fame and success that attended Booth's career--he was billed at one point as "the youngest star in the world"--he found himself consumed by the Confederate cause and the desire to help the South win its independence. Alford reveals the tormented path that led Booth to conclude, as the Confederacy collapsed in April 1865, that the only way to revive the South and punish the North for the war would be to murder Lincoln--whatever the cost to himself or others. The textured and compelling narrative gives new depth to the familiar events at Ford's Theatre and the aftermath that followed, culminating in Booth's capture and death at the hands of Union soldiers 150 years ago. Based on original research into government archives, historical libraries, and family records, Fortune's Fool offers the definitive portrait of John Wilkes Booth.

Book excerpt: Joanna Bourke takes the issue of rape out from the academic ghettos and distills the truth so often exploited to sell newspapers. Neither prurient nor overly sympathetic, she investigates rape from a historical standpoint examining the history of sexual aggression, the idea of rape as a social construct, and the often–ignored idea of embodiment, and analyzes the physical response of rapists as well as the often–cited "rape is about power" theories. Indebted to a growing body of sophisticated feminist analyses about rape victims, Bourke here shifts the emphasis from the victims to the perpetrators in order to place rapists in their historical context. An invaluable study, this book delivers the hard truth that if we are to imagine a world free of unwanted sexual violence, then we must consider the issue of rape from every angle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine is a collection of papers written by the celebrated psychiatrist, Michael Shepherd, who was one of the originators of psychiatric epidemiology in the UK and a leading social psychiatrist of his generation. He designed and implemented some of the first systematic studies into what are now widely recognised clinical syndromes. His extensive research experience and his advocacy of a scientific approach to social psychiatry form the basis of the essays contained in this book. Covering such issues as the development of research strategy and the difficulties involved in completing psychiatric studies, Shepherd's papers address many of the issues currently facing professionals in this field. He writes authoritatively and engagingly on clinical syndromes, the history of ideas and the use of the epidemiological approach in psychiatry. Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine stimulates and informs the reader in equal measure; it will be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any practitioner of medicine.
