Book excerpt: Originally published in 1961, this book comprises of 14 studies by scholars and officials with first-hand experience of Africa and deals with the nature and organization of population censuses and with the many uses to which their results may be put. Written at a time of political transition on the African continent it was vitally important that the collection and interpretation of statistics dealing with distribution, density, migration and occupation in Africa continued. This volume shows how demographers, sociologists, anthropologists and geographers were using the research to be followed in the interpretation of the numerous censuses being conducted in the early 1960s.

Download or read book Livelihoods at the Margins written by James Staples and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex workers, street hawkers, drug sellers, cleaners—they are people living on the margins of urban life who are ubiquitous but widely misunderstood and notably absent from mainstream economic analyses. In Livelihood on the Margins, anthropologists and practitioners engaged in hands-on development work use fine-grained ethnographic research to cut through the conventional narratives that romanticize, victimize, or demonize these populations. They go beyond the trendy “sustainable livelihoods” approach to development to examine the relationship between the agency people can actually wield over their own lives and the broader socio-political constraints that persistently push them to the margins. Making these multi-level connections across a wide range of world regions and situations, this volume shows how the micro-concerns of ordinary people might usefully guide the macro-concerns of governments, NGOs, and global institutions who are engineering large-scale social and economic development programs. Livelihood at the Margins is an engaging and eye-opening read for undergraduate and graduate students studying development in anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, and other disciplines, as well as a useful tool for developments studies researchers and practitioners.
Book Synopsis Town and Country in Central and Eastern Africa by : David Parkin
Download or read book Town and Country in Central and Eastern Africa written by David Parkin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, the studies in this volume examine the range of factors which mediate the development of social processes in both town and country: as well as migration there is the ebb and flow of beliefs, ideologies and educational and occupational opportunities. It considers the fundamental economic and political bases of migrations in the form of colonialism or multi-national controls of various kinds, international commodity markets of supply and demand, and the distinct development policies adopted by independent governments. The editor’s introduction discusses old and new models of migration; the origins of rural inequalities in development; the degree of continuity of language and belief systems between town and country and the persistence of rural links in urban settlements.
Book Synopsis Money is the True Friend by : Pernille Sørensen
Download or read book Money is the True Friend written by Pernille Sørensen and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ugandan economy was once solidly based on the export of cash crops such as coffee and cotton. The economic crisis and the civil war in the 1970s and 1980s however profoundly changed the agricultural economy, and marketing of traditional cash crops was replaced by marketing of commercialized food crops. "Money is the true friend" deals with the emergence of de-regulated food markets for maize in Eastern Uganda. The focus is not marketing as such, but rather a new social and economic field for local traders demarcated by the involvement in three maize markets: the relief market, the Kenyan market and the domestic market. The central problem illuminated in the book is the relationship between the liberalization of food marketing and the development of a new social and cultural practice - a morality - for trading which is both shaped by and shapes the marketing opportunities for the participating traders.
