Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds in Relation to the Alfalfa Weevil The following somewhat general synopsis of the distribution and relative abundance in' Utah of native birds will give a fair idea of the species most available as aids in the fight against the alfalfa weevil. This, combined with details regarding each species, as later presented, will show which birds are doing the most good in any locality. One of the regions most severely infested by the weevil was that immediately south and southwest of Salt Lake City, extending east and west to the edge of the irrigated land. This has an average width of 4: miles and through it flows the J ordan River. In this area the English sparrow is the most abundant bird. Next comes Brewer's blackbird and in smaller numbers are the red winged blackbirds, which confine the bulk of their feeding to the Vicinity of marshes along the river or places where lack of drainage has produced ponds. Following these are Brewer's, vesper, and lark sparrows, and meadowlarks. Robins, though very numerous in migration, are not so frequently met at a later date. The remaining common birds, named approximately in the order of their abundance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Release and Recovery of Introduced Parasites of the Alfalfa Weevil in Eastern North America The adult P. Tuna wasp is 1 mm long. The female deposits one to two eggs inside a weevil egg and may attack several eggs in a cluster within an alfalfa stem. There are several generations each year, and the parasite passes the winter inside the host egg. P. Tuna may have other hosts besides the alfalfa weevil. The data available suggest that parasitism by this species averages from 0 to 10 percent in overwintering eggs of the alfalfa weevil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfalfa Weevil Distribution and Crop Damage in the United States The _many case histories of alfalfa areas in recent years Show that spotted damage of varying intensity caused by the alfalfa weevil occurs intermittently and that much of it could be avoided by harvesting the first crop at the flower bud stage of growth. However, in limited areas, thin stands and poor growth, biological factors, large acreages, or man agement of fields for seed production regularly operate against early cut ting as a successful control, and weather conditions intermittently pre vent employing this control. In such cases control may be obtained by insecticidal treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Evaluation of Insecticides for Control of the Alfalfa Weevil in Maryland, 1962-66 From 1962 to 1966, many insecticides were evaluated for chemical control of the alfalfa weevil. Most of these are still in the experimental stage, are not registered for use on alfalfa, and are no longer of interest commercially. None of the materials applied in the fall to small plots gave effective protection-partly, we now think, because of subsequent reinfestation. The material applied in early spring that showed most promise was Niagara nia - 10242 (granular) at 1 pound per acre (82-percent control at harvest). Named compounds that consistently gave good control when applied to the growing crop during the Spring were azinphosethyl, azin phosmethyl, Azodrin, Imidan, methoxychlor, and phorate. Methoxychlor at 1 pounds per acre plus either diazinon or malathion at 1 pound per acre were the only combinations tested more than 1 year that gave consistently good results. The outstanding numbered insecticides evaluated more than 1 year included American Cyanamid e.i. 47772, Bay 25141 and 39007, Chipman rp-11974, Geigy gs-13005, General Chemical CC-6506, Hercules 14503, Shell sd-7438, and Virginia Carolina VC 3-670. It was developed for the maryland-virginia North Carolina area. The first certified seed of Team alfalfa will be available for spring planting in 1970. This publication makes pertinent information on performance of the new variety available to extension and research personnel, and to prospective growers. Team.a1falfa was released jointly by the u.s° Department of Agriculture and the cooperating Agricultural Experiment Stations of Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia in February 1969. Team represents progress in develop ment of host plant resistance for control of the alfalfa weevil, the most serious insect pest to attack alfalfa in Eastern United States. Breeding alfalfa resistant to the alfalfa weevil has been one of the most difficult objectives undertaken in alfalfa breeding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alfalfa Looper This insect, in the Palouse region of Washington, passes the winter as hibernating pupa and probably also as the adult moth, since much-battered adults are to be seen early in the spring. Late in May and throughout June the adults are to be seen in the alfalfa and clover, darting rapidly away when disturbed. They are active in bright sunlight, feeding on the nectar from the clover and alfalfa blossoms. The flight, though short, is very direct and so rapid as to render the insect almost invisible. No one knows how the insect entered the country, but it spread with startling rapidity during the next 2 years, moving into 30 States. (see fig. Damage to alfalfa mounted as the pest spread. Reduced stands, low yields, poor-quality hay, and increased harvesting costs resulted in estimated losses to growers of more than $42 million in 1956. Heaviest losses were suffered in California, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Arizona. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
