Book excerpt: Progress review of the aims and mission of the Theosophical Society, September 1889, on the occasion of the fifth volume of “Lucifer.” 1. To establish a nucleus of universal brotherhood of man. The Indian National Congress was planned by our Anglo-Indian and Hindu members after the model and on the lines of the Theosophical Society, and has from the first been directed by our own colleagues, men among the most influential in the Indian Empire. From Ceylon the religion of Gautama streamed out to Cambodia, Siam, and Burma; and from this holy land the message of Brotherhood reached Japan. We depicted the chromatic vibrations of the aura of Gautama in the Buddhist Flag — sapphire blue, golden yellow, crimson, white, and scarlet. 2. To promulgate the study oriental philosophy and literature. Our magnificent achievements in India. The revival of Buddhism in Ceylon. Neither race, nor creed, nor colour, nor social class, nor old antipathies are irremovable obstacles to the grand ideals of altruism and brotherhood. 3. To investigate the occult laws and principles in nature and man. We work on the basis that the Higher Self in every man is colourless, cosmopolitan, unsectarian, sexless, and pre-eminently altruistic. The early fruits of the Theosophical Tree, August 1890, a year later. The Theosophical Society arose to defend true science and true religion against a sciolism that was becoming more and more arrogant, and to stem the headlong descent to materialism. The popularity of theosophical and mystical literature indicates the despair and hope of the churches — despair that science will ever read the puzzle of life; hope that the solution may be found in the secret doctrine. The modern Theosophical Movement is a necessity of the age. It has spread under its own inherent impulsion, and owes nothing to adventitious methods. Its strongest allies are the yearnings for light upon the problem of life, and for a nobler conception of the origin, destiny, and potentialities of the human being. Alone the organs of disembodied “angels” poured as unsuccessfully as ever their vials of wrath, mockery, and brutal slander, upon us. However, the utmost malignity and basest treachery have not been able either to controvert our ideas, belittle our objects, disprove the reasonableness of our methods, or fasten upon us a selfish or dishonest motive. The Adyar Library, founded by the loving labour of Colonel Olcott, is the crown and glory of the Theosophical Society. Progress review of the three objects of the Theosophical Society. The clear note of universal brotherhood was struck and the evangel of religious tolerance declared in India, where previously there had been only sectarian hatred and selfish class egotism. And by bringing the people of Ceylon, Burma, Siam, and Japan, into fraternal relations with the Hindus, and creating channels for international intercourse upon religious and educational subjects. In the East End of London we have founded the first Working-Women’s Club, wholly free from theological creeds and conditions. We have revived the study of oriental literature across the globe, thus opening up the vista of a new spiritual day for the world, the harbinger of a new marriage between science and religion, and of peace between the people of the most incongruous sects. We have placed before the thinking public a logical, coherent, and philosophical scheme of man’s origin, destiny, and evolution — a scheme pre-eminent above all for its rigorous adherence to justice. Theosophy, the universal solvent, is fulfilling its mission. For many a long year humanity, the “great orphan,” has been crying aloud in the darkness for guidance and light — but no more!

Yet the Buddhism of today is less a rather dogmatic religion, split into many and heterogeneous sects. Like true Buddhism, Theosophy asserts and maintains the truth common to all religions, pure truth undefiled by the concretions of ages of human passions and needs, and unveils Its majesty to all thinking men.

Book excerpt: Inflamed by the abnormal fancies and uncanny dreams of an acting Editor of “The Theosophist.” The Esoteric Section of The Theosophical Society is wholly apart from the latter, and owes no allegiance to it. Madame Blavatsky alone is responsible for its members. Let the Theosophical Society break away from the original lines, and show disloyalty in its policy to the Cause and the Original Programme, and Madame Blavatsky will shake it off like dust from her feet. There is no such a thing as “Parent Society”; it has been abolished and replaced by an aggregate body of Theosophical Societies, all autonomous as the States of America are, and all under one Head-President who, together with Madame Blavatsky, champions the Cause against the whole world. Madame Blavatsky does not owe the slightest allegiance to a Council which is liable at any moment to issue silly and untheosophical commands. No more than Madame Blavatsky has Col. Olcott the right of exercising autocracy or papal powers, for both Founders of the Theosophical Society have sworn allegiance to the Fellows, whom they vowed to protect, and teach those who want to be taught; they are not to tyrannize and rule over them. “The sun of truth fears no light and needs no lies.” In his zeal hunting the mare’s nest, the esteemed acting Editor of “The Theosophist” has become more Catholic than the Pope himself. Let the General Council expel Madame Blavatsky for “disloyalty,” if Col. Olcott should be so blind as to fail to see where the loyal friend and his duty lie. Enough of theosophical dogmatism and intolerance! If you want to know yourself ask your enemies, not your friends, and you will find more truth, and profit more by their opinion than by that of those who love you. Plus, an explanation important to all Theosophists introduced by Boris de Zirkoff, a Statement by Madame Blavatsky, and a Joint Note by Col. Olcott and Madame Blavatsky.

Book excerpt: The only God whom we should serve is Humanity, and our only cult should be the love of our fellow man. Doing evil towards him, we wound God and make him suffer. This is our religion and only dogma. There now follows the response of Madame Blavatsky to an article by Charles Limousin, Editor of the Journal Acacia. A. The scientific aristocracy is full of vanity and struts on stilts of its own fabrication. B. A ray feeble light from the Sun of Truth worths much more than the artificial lights offered by physiologists and pathologists, and those elevated to the ranks of psychologists. C. The supernatural does not exist in Nature when one knows how to awaken the latent principle that animates matter. D. Divine wisdom rests on esoteric philosophy and facts of nature. E. A solitary ascetic is a living symbol of the most cowardly egotism. F. Universal Esotericism presents a periodic cosmic and human genesis which is logical and based on natural sciences, as well as on a pure transcendental philosophy. G. Budhist Esotericism has nothing to do with the Buddhist religion (note the difference in spelling). H. Theosophy is the forbear of modern science, though greatly transcending it in logic; and its metaphysics are vaster, far more beautiful and powerful than any emanating from a dogmatic cult. I. Happiness cannot exist where Truth is absent and egotism reigns supreme. It is merely a house of cards tumbling down at the first whiff. J-K. As long there is no room in the human heart for love of one’s fellow man for his own sake, and not for personal gratification, poor and rich man alike will always be unhappy. Modern science opposes to a natural force another natural force more powerful on the physical plane. Esoteric science opposes to a physical force, a spiritual or psychic force. L. Theosophists see in the priest of any religion a useless if not a pernicious being. M. The first law of the Sacred Science is never to use one’s knowledge for one’s own interest, but to work with and for others for their health and happiness. N. If a fusion of opposing and competing interests does not come about, individuals and nations will end devouring each other. O. Theosophy has nothing to do with Brahmanism, except to combat its abuses, remove the opium of superstition, and expose ecclesiastical cruelty. P. True Theosophists strive to be useful to their fellows, more especially to the disinherited ones of the world. Q. As long as the Brotherhood of Man remains an empty phrase in the air, progress will accomplish no other function than that of executioner of the poor and the downtrodden. R. As long as moral progress slumbers in inactivity, paralyzed by the ferocious egotism of everybody, the rich as well as the poor, happiness will remain a pie in the sky. S. The Secret Doctrine shows that at the beginning of the periodic evolution of our globe and its beings, the processes of generation offered varieties not even suspected in the modern laboratories. T. The infinite cannot associate with the finite; the unconditioned ignores the conditioned and the limited. Neither Brahmanas nor Bonzes, in their most acute exoteric delirium, have ever accepted the finiteness of Kosmos. U. Material progress, the so-called modern civilisation, has served only to provide the rich with enjoyments unknown in the centuries of barbarism. V. The West has not always refused the hand extended to it by the Eastern Adepts. X. Exoteric Brahmanism will soon be replaced by Esoteric Vedism, and Brotherly Love will bring about a fusion of the two Aryan Races. Z. But the mass has always bitten the hand that offered it help.

Every man’s reasoned opinion has a right to pass into the common auditory, for arguments are the currency of the intellect. In the great theatre of literature there are no authorized door-keepers: for our anonymous critics are self-elected. But they have lost all credit with wise men by unfair dealing: such as their refusal to receive an honest man’s money, because they anticipate and dislike his opinion, and his intellectual coin is refused under pretence that it is light or counterfeit — without any proof given either by the money scales, or by sounding the coin in dispute together with one of known goodness. Either the intolerant person is not master of the grounds on which his own faith is built — which therefore neither is or can it be his own faith — and he is angry, not at the opposition to Truth, but at the interruption of his own indolence and intellectual slumber. Or he has no love of Truth for its own sake; no reverence for the divine command to seek earnestly after it, which command, if it had not been so often and solemnly given by revelation, is yet involved and expressed in the gift of reason, and in the dependence of all our virtues on its development. There can be no end without means; and God furnishes no means that exempt us from the task and duty of joining our own best endeavours. Yet these are not only not forbidden by the self-obscurant Papists without a Pope, and the Protestants who protest only against all protesting, to examine and propose our doubts, so to proceed from a real desire to know the Truth; but we are repeatedly commanded so as not to find reasons for faith, but pretexts for infidelity. The light of truth shines beyond our mortal ken with unfading glory. Men have done their best to veil every beam and to replace the solar rays with the false glare of error and fiction; none more so than the bigoted, narrow-minded theologians and priests of every faith, casuists and perverters through selfishness. This world of ours in the natural enemy of every truth. Thou art this, but thou knowest it not. Truth is the supreme religion and Theosophy, the religion of the future. There is but one Absolute Truth in the Kosmos. Truth will unveil her beauty only to the heavenly man. A Master of Wisdom on the Spirit of Truth. This Spirit is a force that can neither be hindered nor stopped. Those who recognize it, and feel that this is the supreme moment of their salvation, will be uplifted by it beyond the illusions of the great astral serpent. The majority of the public Areopagus is generally composed of self-appointed judges, who have never made a permanent deity of any idol save their own personalities, their lower selves.

This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True patriotism is the kinship of the most unselfish of human affections. Morality is no accident of human nature, but its essential characteristic. Though the principle, which is the abiding spirit of the law, remains perpetual and unaltered, the letter of the law and the mode of realizing it in actual practice, must be modified by circumstance. Patriotism is a link in the golden chain of our affections and virtues, and turns away with indignant scorn from the false philosophy or mistaken religion, which would persuade him that cosmopolitism is nobler than nationality, and that the human race a sublimer object of love than a people. Patriotism is the kinship of the most unselfish of human affections, the powers and interests of men spread without confusion through a common sphere, like the vibrations propagated in the air by a single voice, distinct yet coherent, and all uniting to express one thought and the same feeling. What were the Greeks while they remained free and independent? When Greece resembled a collection of mirrors set in a single frame, each having its own focus of patriotism, yet all capable of converging to one point and of consuming a common foe? They were the fountains of light and civilization, of truth and of beauty, to all mankind, the thinking head the beating heart of the whole world! They lost their independence, and with their independence their patriotism, and became the cosmopolites of antiquity. And what came out of these men, who were eminently free without patriotism, be-cause without national independence? While they were intense patriots, they were the benefactors of all mankind, legislators for the very nation that afterwards subdued and enslaved them. Even in cases of actual injury and just alarm the patriot sets bounds to the reprisal of national vengeance, and contents himself with such securities as are compatible with the welfare, though not with the ambitious projects of the nation, whose aggressions had given the provocation: for as patriotism inspires no superhuman faculties, neither can it dictate any conduct which would require such. He is too conscious of his own ignorance of the future, to dare extend his calculations into remote periods; nor, because he is a statesman, arrogates to himself the cares of Providence and the government of the world. Without local attachment, without national honour, we shall resemble a swarm of insects that settle on the fruits of the earth to corrupt and consume them, rather than men who love and cleave to the land of their forefathers. Deceit and hypocrisy is national politics are elevated to noble patriotic aspirations. Until final emancipation reabsorbs the Ego, it must be conscious of the purest sympathies called out by the aesthetic effects of high art, its tenderest cords responding to the call of the holier and nobler human attachments until all human and purely individual personal feelings — blood-ties and friendship, patriotism and race predilection — all will give away, to become blended into one universal feeling, the only true and holy, the only truly Unselfish and Eternal one — Love, an Immense Love for Humanity. Patriots may burst their hearts in vain if circumstances are against them. But no human power, not even the fury and force of the loftiest patriotism, has been able to bend an iron destiny aside from its fixed course, and nations have gone out like torches dropped into water in the engulfing blackness of ruin. Speculative lucubrations of an Aristotelean philosopher. He is the mouthpiece of that majority in modern society which has worked itself out an elaborate policy full of sophistry and paradox, behind which every member clumsily hides his personal views. His “respectable deference to public opinion,” is short-hand for hypocrisy. He confuses phenomena for which the agency of “disembodied spirits” is claimed, with natural phenomena for which every tithe of supernaturalism is rejected. The great, the glorious hour has come at last! Ambition, grasping greediness or envy — miscalled Patriotism — exist no longer. Cruel selfishness has made room for universal altruism, and cold indifference to the wants of the millions no longer finds favour in the sight of the favoured few. Selfishness kills every noble impulse. It is the prolific mother of all vices, Lie being born out of the necessity for dissembling, and Hypocrisy out of the desire to mask Lie. Deceit and Hypocrisy work for dear self’s sake everywhere. Nations, by tacit agreement, have decided that selfish motives in politics shall be called “noble national aspiration, patriotism,” and the citizen views it in his family circle as “domestic virtue.” Nevertheless, selfishness, whether it breeds desire for aggrandizement of territory, or competition in commerce to the detriment of one’s neighbour, can never be regarded as a virtue. Equally, a diplomat’s qualification, “dexterity or skill in securing advantages” for one’s own country, at the expense of other countries, can hardly be achieved by speaking truth but, verily, by a wily and deceitful tongue. The Turks have been convicted of systematic lying and atrocities in nearly every country. But the condition of Israelites in Russia has immensely improved since the accession of Alexander II to the throne of his father. The chief Rabbi of Moscow published an earnest address to his co-religionists throughout the empire to remind them that they were Russians by birth, and called upon them to display their patriotism in subscriptions for the wounded, prayers in the synagogues for the success of the Russian arms, and all other practical ways. The aim of Christian missions is to pervert people from their ancestral religions, rather than convert them to Christianity, in order to destroy in them every spark of national feeling. For when the spirit of patriotism is dead in a nation, it very easily becomes a mere puppet in the hands of the rulers. A true theosophist must be a cosmopolitan in his heart. He must embrace the whole of humanity in his philanthropic feelings. It is higher and far nobler to be one of those who love their fellow men, without distinction of race, creed, caste or colour, than to be merely a good patriot, or still less, a partisan.

The sorcerer is society’s deadliest enemy. All those who have a voice in the education of the masses should first know, and then teach, that the safest guides to human happiness and enlightenment are those writings on genuine science and theology that descended to us from the remotest antiquity. The world needs neither churches nor temples. The real Temple of God is within every man, walled-in by the impenetrable jungle of matter. Only the pure in heart see God and obey the behests of the Spirit of Truth. The trinity of nature is the lock of magic, and the trinity of man is the master key to the wonders of nature. But the spirit must hold in complete subjection the combativeness of educated reason, until cold sophistry is vanquished beyond the skewed reality. Magic cannot be mastered by the white-skinned people for they are unfit physically, morally, and psychologically. Inflamed by dogmatic superstition, and the self-aggrandising sense of cultural superiority and national destiny over those whom the Anglo-Saxons term so contemptuously niggers, the white European would hardly submit himself to the practical tuition of Copt, Brahman, or Lama. Book learning of magic formulæ, unlit by spiritual intuition and bereft of higher mental faculties, is not only utterly useless but also fraught with unspeakable dangers for those who dabble in occult practices while their animal passions are rampant. Spiritualism is neither science, nor religion, nor philosophy. Is the boa constrictor of error resulting in spiritual ruin. Ignoring the teachings of the past, modern spiritualists have discovered no substitute. A thousand mortifying rebuffs have failed to open up their higher faculties above reason and sense. Bewildered by the contradictions they encounter, they keep waiting for their tentative hypotheses to be verified by further experience. Modern spiritualists are unconscious necromancers. They are disinclined to admit the axiomatic truths of Ancient Spiritualism (i.e. Eastern Occult Sciences), now so derided by crass materialism. They start with the fallacy that all phenomena are caused by the action of departed human spirits; they have not looked into the powers of the Protean power of spirit; and they do not know the extent to which spirit acts, how far it reaches, what it underlies. Christian theology is subversive of, rather than promotive of, spirituality and morality. Instead of expounding the rules of divine law and justice, it teaches but itself. Modern science, powerless to satisfy the aspirations of the race, makes the future shallow and meaningless and, by feeding on the putrescence of matter, it bereaves man of hope. Every religious faith is an offshoot from One Tree, the Archaic Wisdom-Religion. Combined, their aggregate represents One Eternal Truth; separate, they are but shades of human error and signs of imperfection. The world’s religions sprung from pre-Vedic Brahmanism and Buddhism. Judaism, Christianity, and Islamism, were inspired by Paganism, i.e., Ancient Wisdom, replete with Deity.
