Book excerpt: The new farming methods that so radically changed English agriculture in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were not adopted immediately by all farmers. The rate of improvement was uneven, not only between one farmer and another, but between different farming regions. This book suggests an approach to the problem of regional agricultural change and the factors which determined the different rates of change. Dr Grigg begins by describing the differences between the agricultural regions of South Lincolnshire - that is the two parts of Kesteven and Holland, an area fairly typical of eastern England - at the end of the eighteenth century. These were differences not only of land use and soil type but of landownership and farm size, productivity and location. The diffusion and adoption of new methods in each region is considered against the general economic background of the late eighteenth century and the boom conditions of the period of the Napoleonic Wars. The later part of the book traces the rate of farming improvement in the less favourable price conditions after 1815, and finds a marked contrast between this period and the preceding forty years. The way in which the agricultural geography of the area was changed by the new methods is discussed, and in addition Dr Grigg shows how the conditions of each agricultural region affected farmers' response to the new methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first available survey of English agriculture between 1500 and 1850. It combines new evidence with recent findings from the specialist literature, to argue that the agricultural revolution took place in the century after 1750. Taking a broad view of agrarian change, the author begins with a description of sixteenth-century farming and an analysis of its regional structure. He then argues that the agricultural revolution consisted of two related transformations. The first was a transformation in output and productivity brought about by a complex set of changes in farming practice. The second was a transformation of the agrarian economy and society, including a series of related developments in marketing, landholding, field systems, property rights, enclosure and social relations. Written specifically for students, this book will be invaluable to anyone studying English economic and social history, or the history of agriculture.

WINNER of the British Agricultural History Society's 2022 Thirsk Prize WINNER of the 2022 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award "This meticulously researched book gives a detailed and authoritative history of agricultural change in the second half of the twentieth century. The book skilfully weaves together the hitherto underexplored individual returns of the Farm Management Survey with oral histories of the farmers who enacted change on the ground to offer an incisive account of the complex technological, political and cultural developments which gave rise to some of the greatest changes in English farming history. It will stand as the key reference point for those with an interest in the history of agricultural change in Britain." Professor Mark Riley, University of Liverpool At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 British agriculture was largely powered by the muscles of men, women, and horses, and used mostly nineteenth-century technology to produce less than half of the country's temperate food. By 1985, less land and far fewer people were involved in farming, the power sources and technologies had been completely transformed, and the output of the country's agriculture had more than doubled. This is the story of the national farm, reflecting the efforts and experiences of 200,000 or so farmers and their families, together with the people they employed. But it is not the story of any individual one of them. We know too little about change at the individual farm level, although what happened varied considerably between farms and between different technologies. Based on an improbably-surviving archive of Farm Management Survey accounts, supported by oral histories from some of the farmers involved, this book explores the links between the production of new technologies, their transmission through knowledge networks, and their reception on individual farms. It contests the idea that rapid adoption of technology was inevitable, and reveals the unevenness, variability and complexity that lay beneath the smooth surface of the official statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of English farming in the time of the "agricultural revolution" to be based on the actual records of farmers. These records shed new light on how farmers worked and what they produced. The authors show conclusively that an agricultural revolution did occur in the first half of the nineteenth century. - ;This is the first major study of English agriculture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to be based on the records of the farmer. Traditionally this was a period of 'agricultural revolution', but generations of historians have found it remarkably difficult to measure its salient characteristics. By bringing together a range of qualitative and quantitative data found in accounts, memoranda books, and diaries, Michael Turner, John Beckett, and Bethanie Afton are able to throw important new light on the way farmers worked, and to produce new estimates of the output of wheat, barley, and other arable crops, and of livestock. The evidence of the farmers' own records has enabled the authors to approach the agricultural history of the period in an entirely different light, and to show conclusively that the agricultural revolution can be located in the first half of the nineteenth century as the English farmer successfully fed a growing, predominantly urban population. - ;The book serves two valuable purposes. Firstly, it draws attention to the volume of information which can be gained from a source which has been too often dismissed as fragmentary and difficult to handle. Secondly, it offers a rather different perspective on farming from that derived from the more-readily-available records of the larger estates and helps to serve as a corrective to some of the more optimistic contemporary views on agricultural progress. - Southern History Society;A volume that ought to find its way on to the shelves of all those who are seriously interested in England's agricultural history, if only because of the splendid survey of recent writing on the subject which it contains ... The authors have given us here an excellent review of recent literature on their subject, and a few new interesting statistics to ponder. - English Historical Review;Michael Turner, John Beckett and Bethanie Afton are among the most prolific and talented historians of English agriculture. - The Agricultural History Review
