Book excerpt: Former covert ops agent Tom Sexton risks it all one last time to take down the terrorist who wants him dead in the final installment of the Agent Series. Hunted for more than twenty years by a mysterious terrorist known as the Benefactor, former Navy Seabee Tom Sexton is done running. Working with his girlfriend, Stella, for a private-sector spec ops team, Tom has a plan to eliminate the elusive stranger who murdered his family. But Tom didn't just emerge from deep cover. He might have been lured. A former colleague gone rogue has warned Tom of a shadow agent hiding in plain sight. If Tom trusts the intel, that means he can't trust anyone else. Over the next seventy-two hours, Tom will be fighting for his life--and Stella's--and to expose the traitor. And he may be walking into more than one trap. It's a collision course with a truth he never saw coming. One that may require a sacrifice he's not willing to make.

Book excerpt: Recruited as babies by a mysterious organization known as the Orphanage, sixteen-year-old twin brothers Bennet and Collin mean the world to each other, even though they’re complete opposites. Collin is training to be a field agent while Bennet is an earpiece, in constant communication with his brother, monitoring his activities and providing computer support from a safe distance. When a mission goes horribly wrong, Bennet is left bereft, missing his other half. Already introverted, he retreats into himself. In his final statement, Collin urged him to leave the Orphanage, but it’s the only home he’s ever known. Instead, he makes a drastic decision: he’ll fill the Collin-sized hole in his heart by rejecting his computer-focused career path, trying instead to match Collin’s physical prowess so he can become a field agent like him. Training with Collin’s old girlfriend, Darcy, a skilled assassin, Bennet tries to prove he can be just as skillful with his fists and a gun as at the keyboard, in the face of skepticism from the Orphanage and all of his classmates. As he struggles to succeed, Bennet must question how much he has hurt those around him and how much more important it is to be himself than just a copy of his brother. When his class is given its final assignment, both his new skills as a field agent and his old skills as an earpiece are put to the ultimate test. Failure could prove fatal, not only to himself but to his fellow agents-in-training—the only family he has left. And as if that weren’t enough, the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance . . .

Their explosive chemistry together is an emotional hazard she's willing to risk. A high-powered security expert at KRG Consulting, Tully has intimacy issues of his own. The stirring hum of attraction he feels with his new client comes with boundaries. Tully's job: just keep Natalie safe. But keeping his distance is getting harder. Whoever is playing games with Natalie wants to take things one deadly step further. The deeper Tully and Natalie are drawn into danger, the closer they become. It's time for Natalie and Tully to face their fears--of falling in love and of falling prey to a vengeful killer.

Can computer designers help psychoanalysts to understand their theory better? In contemporary publications human psyche is often related to neural networks. Why? The wiring in computers can also be related to application software. But does this really make sense? Artificial Intelligence has tried to implement functions of human psyche. The reached achievements are remarkable; however, the goal to get a functional model of the mental apparatus was not reached. Was the selected direction incorrect? The editors are convinced: yes, and they try to give answers here. If one accepts that the brain is an information processing system, then one also has to accept that computer theories can be applied to the brain’s functions, the human mental apparatus. The contributors of this book - Solms, Panksepp, Sloman and many others who are all experts in computer design, psychoanalysis and neurology are united in one goal: finding synergy in their interdisciplinary fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many real-world decision problems have multiple objectives. For example, when choosing a medical treatment plan, we want to maximize the efficacy of the treatment, but also minimize the side effects. These objectives typically conflict, e.g., we can often increase the efficacy of the treatment, but at the cost of more severe side effects. In this book, we outline how to deal with multiple objectives in decision-theoretic planning and reinforcement learning algorithms. To illustrate this, we employ the popular problem classes of multi-objective Markov decision processes (MOMDPs) and multi-objective coordination graphs (MO-CoGs). First, we discuss different use cases for multi-objective decision making, and why they often necessitate explicitly multi-objective algorithms. We advocate a utility-based approach to multi-objective decision making, i.e., that what constitutes an optimal solution to a multi-objective decision problem should be derived from the available information about user utility. We show how different assumptions about user utility and what types of policies are allowed lead to different solution concepts, which we outline in a taxonomy of multi-objective decision problems. Second, we show how to create new methods for multi-objective decision making using existing single-objective methods as a basis. Focusing on planning, we describe two ways to creating multi-objective algorithms: in the inner loop approach, the inner workings of a single-objective method are adapted to work with multi-objective solution concepts; in the outer loop approach, a wrapper is created around a single-objective method that solves the multi-objective problem as a series of single-objective problems. After discussing the creation of such methods for the planning setting, we discuss how these approaches apply to the learning setting. Next, we discuss three promising application domains for multi-objective decision making algorithms: energy, health, and infrastructure and transportation. Finally, we conclude by outlining important open problems and promising future directions.

Book excerpt: This monograph introduces recent developments in formation control of distributed-agent systems. Eschewing the traditional concern with the dynamic characteristics of individual agents, the book proposes a treatment that studies the formation control problem in terms of interactions among agents including factors such as sensing topology, communication and actuation topologies, and computations. Keeping pace with recent technological advancements in control, communications, sensing and computation that have begun to bring the applications of distributed-systems theory out of the industrial sphere and into that of day-to-day life, this monograph provides distributed control algorithms for a group of agents that may behave together. Unlike traditional control laws that usually require measurements with respect to a global coordinate frame and communications between a centralized operation center and agents, this book provides control laws that require only relative measurements and communications between agents without interaction with a centralized operator. Since the control algorithms presented in this book do not require any global sensing and any information exchanges with a centralized operation center, they can be realized in a fully distributed way, which significantly reduces the operation and implementation costs of a group of agents. Formation Control will give both students and researchers interested in pursuing this field a good grounding on which to base their work.

Book excerpt: 4th Party Cyber Logistics For Air Cargo is a technical discussion for researchers and practitioners to understand the issues, models, and future directions of air cargo logistics in the cyber era. This book introduces the many aspects of planning and control of air cargo logistics processes in an e-Business environment. The authors approach this subject matter from the perspective of the logistics service providers. There is tremendous potential of achieving industry-wide collaboration between agents of the air cargo industry via an e-Business community platform. At the same time, there are many intellectually challenging problems regarding the architecture, ownership, decision support environment, and knowledge management of such an e-Business platform. The authors provide an evolutionary view to conceptualize the developments of websites where e-Commerce activities and e-Business activities co-exist. Four Web eras are detailed, providing an impetus for the development of frameworks of an e-Business platform for air cargo logistics, or e-Platform. The conceptual framework captures the new elements in cyber logistics and what the framework can do for the industry.

Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a method that plans trajectories for autonomous agents to enable them to fulfil different tasks while ensuring the collision-free movement. The agents are locally controlled and connected over an unreliable communication network that may induce packet losses and transmission delays. Further sensors e.g. for a distance measurement are not used and communication should only be invoked if it is necessary to avoid a collision. The basic problem occurs for two agents. The first agent can change its trajectory at any time without regard to the second agent, which has to ensure the collision avoidance. To this aim it adapts its trajectory based only on local data and communicated information about the current and future movement of the first agent. A control unit for the second agent is introduced that has to execute four tasks to ensure the control aims: 1. Estimation of the current network properties. 2. Prediction of the movement of the stand-on agent. 3. Invocation of communication whenever the local data becomes too uncertain. 4. Planning of collision avoiding trajectories. The main result of the thesis is a novel control method for mobile agents that solves the four tasks leading to a proven collision avoidance. The method consists of a delay estimator, a prediction unit, an event generator and a trajectory planning unit. The method can be used for different types of agents (e.g. UAVs or cars) with only slight modifications. The proposed method is tested and evaluated through simulations and experiments with both, two quadrotors and two nonholonomic robots.
