Book excerpt: This volume provides evidence from many of Australia’s leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines to support policies that address challenges presented by Australia’s ageing population. It builds on presentations made to the 2014 Symposium of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. The material is in four parts: Perspectives on AgeingPopulation Ageing: Global, regional and Australian perspectivesImproving Health and WellbeingResponses by Government and Families/Individuals ‘The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia sees this volume as a major contribution to improving our understanding of Australia’s population ageing. Social science research in this area truly underpins our ability as a nation to manage such demographic change, and its consequences for the economy and society. Such knowledge helps ensure that our citizens can live even better lives.’ — Glenn Withers, President, ASSA ‘It is fantastic that Australians are living longer and healthier lives but we need to address these demographic changes.’ — The Hon Joe Hockey MP, 2015 Intergenerational Report

Book excerpt: This stimulating volume examines the many faces of Australia’s ageing population, the social and health issues they contend with, and the steps being taken—and many that should be taken—to help ensure a more positive and productive later life. Individual and societal ageing are conceptualized as developmental in nature, socially diverse, and marked by daily life challenges stemming from the country’s economic structures, attitudes, geography, political landscape, and infrastructure. Wide-ranging coverage (e.g., health, inequalities, employment, transportation) assesses options available to older people, and the role of families, employers, service providers, government agencies, and others in promoting or expanding those choices. The book’s double emphasis on challenges in older people’s lives and opportunities for enhancing their quality of life is on clear display as case studies examine policy issues—and propose solutions—in a societal and individual context. Included in the coverage: · Australian developments in ageing: issues and history. · Cultural diversity, health, and ageing. · Indigenous Australians and ageing: responding to diversity in policy and practice. · Enhancing the health and employment participation of older workers. · Housing and the environments of ageing. · Health services and care for older people. The rich examples in Ageing in Australia contain a depth of understanding and evidence for sociologists, gerontologists and psychologists studying ageing, health care professionals providing care to older people, and policy analysts assessing areas for improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that our society is ageing is a popular source of gloomy predictions for the future. We see today's youth struggling in their mature years to pay for the masses of geriatric baby boomers whose productive years lie far behind. Australia's New Aged shows that this belief is part reality and part myth. While there will be an increase in the proportion of aged people in the next 20 years, this is a temporary phenomenon and it is likely that tomorrow's elderly will quite differently from their parents. Australia's New Aged examines public policy for the aged in the context of an increasingly vocal and active elderly population and cutbacks to health and welfare spending. The authors argue that policy makers have become trapped in a 'social problem' approach to ageing that assumes the elderly are a homogeneous, disadvantaged group with common interests. They examine a range of cases and identify negative consequences of inappropriate assumptions in terms of structural blindness and brutality. They show that this approach is no longer viable and argue that both policy makers and the aged care industry will need to be more sensitive to diversity and more flexible than ever before. Australia's New Aged is essential reading for students, policy makers and anyone working with the aged. John McCallum is Professor of Public Health and Dean of the Faculty of Health at the University of Western Sydney, Macarthur and co-editor of Grey Policy (1990). Karin Geiselhart is a journalist previously employed by the Office for the Status of Women in Canberra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I want this book to give hope and guidance, and offer some light in the midst of the madness.” The Australian Ageing Generation Handbook is the only of its kind in Australia and just in time. Recent studies show that Dementia will become Australia’s greatest killer in the coming years. With great improvements in the world of modern medicine, senior Australian’s are enjoying their quality of life for a much longer time. However this means the ageing population of Australia is also increasing and many children are struggling to cope with the responsibility of care for an older parent as well as their own children while maintaining a healthy work life balance. Josie lives this life right now, and has been caring for her mother who suffers from Dementia for several years. As Josie experienced, in the beginning, many children caring for older parents have no idea what to do, where to go for help, how to navigate not only the services on offer, but also the flood of emotions and challenges that face them. The Sandwich Generation as Josie calls it is the key market – the generation in between looking after elderly parents, and kids, and perhaps even grandkids. However, younger generations looking after elderly parents, or even grandparents, will benefit from this book also. Collaborating with aged care services and communities around Australia, Josie has fast become the go to guide for ageing care. A member of Alzheimer’s Australia, Josie has written The Australian Ageing Generation Handbook to provide Australians with a resourceful list of services for the family members caring for their elderly parents.

The addition of 25 years to average life expectancy in Australia over the past century is a monumental achievement, but many commentators are greeting the prospect of Australians living longer with horror. The ageing of Australia's baby boomers will sharpen this debate, both because of the size of their generation, as well as their history of reshaping every phase of life in their own image. Ageing will dominate Australian politics for years to come, touching almost every area of policy—retirement incomes, housing, employment, urban design and more. Advanced Australia makes the case for a much more positive approach to ageing that celebrates the continuing contribution older Australians make to our community.

Book excerpt: This report begins by recognizing that Australia's recent immigration, fertility, and mortality trends have resulted in a rapid increase not only in the numbers of older Australians but also in their proportion of the total population. After briefly reviewing the contemporary demographic aging of Australia's population and its likely course over the next two decades, this report examines the Australian social security system which is noncontributory and historically has focused on the alleviation of poverty rather than the replacement of earnings. The paper discusses the liberalization of the eligibility criteria for the age pension, widened access to government-subsidized or funded pensions, private superannuation, and the range of services available to the aged. The report examines how these changes have contributed to modifying age at retirement, migration behavior, housing, and living arrangements of the elderly. Recent pressure to change the social security provisions for the aged is considered, some of the proposed changes are reviewed, and their possible effects upon the behavior and well-being of the Australian aged population are briefly addressed. It is argued that the present system disproportionately favors the better-off segments of the older population and that there exists a danger that these inequalities will be exacerbated, especially if a political strategy of across-the-board cutbacks in provisions is preferred to reductions in eligibility for support and services. Book excerpt: The ageing of the population is a demographic phenomenon, a social problem and a policy issue. The increase in the numbers of aged and in the costs of supporting and caring for them have also brought increases in family care, in deinstitutionalisation of aged care services and in issues of quality and outcomes of care and consumer rights. The growing recognition of the feminisation of ageing also has significant social and policy consequences. In this 1998 book, Diane Gibson synthesises a wide range of material to provide an overview of these issues and policy responses worldwide. The book then looks in-depth at Australia, a country typical in the problems it faces, and a world leader in many of its solutions. Gibson also offers a more conceptual examination of theoretical implications and practical consequences. She elucidates debates in ways which will set new standards for aged care policy and practice worldwide.
