Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation, Vol. 22 The fourth part, which discusses briefly the fundamental principles of the Reformation movement, ought perhaps to have been put first as an introduction, but I preferred to place it at the end; partly because such an introduction might have frightened young readers, and partly because the principles of the movement can best be judged after the reader has known something about its history. The fourth part is the only portion of this small manual which has any claim to belong exclusively to the writer, and to represent views of the subject treated for which he is alone responsible. The chronological summary has been taken almost entirely from Weingarten's admirable tables. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cynicism seems to be an exception. Its polytropic versatility apparently prevents any discontinuation of its application. Everyone knows that cynicism denotes that which is deemed deleterious at a given time; and every time will specify its toxicities – the apparent result being the term’s non-specificity. This study describes the cynical stance and statement so as to render the term’s use scholarly expedient. Close readings of textual sources commonly deemed cynical provide a legible starting point. A rhetorical analysis of aphorisms ascribed to the arch-Cynic Diogenes facilitates describing the design of cynical statements, as well as the characteristic features of the cynical stance. These patterns are identifiable in later texts generally labeled cynical – above all in Machiavelli’s Principe. With recourse to the Diogenical archetype, cynicism is likewise rendered describable in Gracián’s Oráculo manual, Diderot’s Le neveu de Rameau, and Nietzsche’s Posthumous Fragments. This study’s description of cynicism provides a phenomenon otherwise considered amorphous with distinct contours, renders transparent its workings, and tenders a dependable basis for further analyses.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation, Vol. 3: In the Sixteenth Century Complaints have been made of the delay which has taken place in the publication of this third volume. Some would even have had me not to print the first before the whole was completed. There may be certain superior intellects to which conditions may be prescribed, but there are others whose feebleness must give conditions, and to this class I belong. To publish a volume at one time, at another time when I am able a second volume, and then a third, is the course which my primary duties and hum ble abilities allow me to take. Othe'r circumstances, moreover, have interposed; severe afflictions have on two occasions inter rupted the composition of this third volume, and concentrated all my affections and all my thoughts on the tomb of beloved children. The thought that it was my duty to glorify the adorable Master, who addressed those powerful calls to me, and accompanied them with so much divine consolation, could alone have given me the courage necessary to prosecute my labours. Divisions of time are generally arbitrary; but, on the whole, Constance seems to me the real end of an epoch. Any other term has the greater defect of making a gap between two things which were essentially continuous, the New Learning and the Reformation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thirty-Nine Articles, and the Age of the Reformation: An Historical and Doctrinal Exposition in the Light of Contemporary Documents The demand for a reprint of this work may be taken to indicate that it meets in a special way the requirements of students who read the XXXIX. Articles not merely with a view to passing examinations, but who desire by means of extracts from original authorities to go more carefully into the controversies of the Age of the Reformation, and to appreciate the place which our Articles hold in the symbolic theology of the sixteenth century. Opportunity has been taken to introduce some corrections and improvements, and to bring more up to date passages dealing with such questions as the Reservation of the Sacrament and the validity of Anglican Orders, upon which important pronouncements have been delivered. Book excerpt: The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection encapsulates an extraordinary confluence of theological inquiry, philosophical meditation, and literary artistry. This anthology traverses a vast temporal landscape, from the patristic period to the threshold of the contemporary, gathering a multitude of voices that have shaped Christian thought and the broader cultural legacy of humanity. It juxtaposes the divine comedy of Dante Alighieri with the existential musings of Friedrich Nietzsche, the transcendental reflections of Ralph Waldo Emerson with the spiritual allegories of John Bunyan, and the mystic insights of St. Teresa of Ávila with the practical Christianity of Charles M. Sheldon, showcasing an unparalleled range of literary styles and theological perspectives. The collection stands as a testimony to the enduring dialogue between faith and reason, individual belief and societal norms. The contributing authors and editors, drawn from varied epochs and geographies, reflect a rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts. Figures like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Leo Tolstoy stand alongside St. Augustine and Martin Luther, exemplifying the anthologys alignment with significant historical and literary movements. This diversity not only illuminates the multifaceted nature of Christian thought but also demonstrates how these varied voices contribute to a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the anthologys central themes. Such an assemblage encourages readers to discern the intricate relationships between faith, culture, and personal conviction across different periods and places. The Pursuit of Belief - Christian Classics Collection is an indispensable volume for those interested in the intersection of faith, literature, and philosophy. It offers readers the unique opportunity to engage with a wide array of perspectives and themes, encouraging a comprehensive exploration of Christian belief as both a personal journey and a collective experience. This anthology is not merely a scholarly endeavor but a voyage through time and thought, inviting readers to ponder profound questions and explore the myriad ways in which the pursuit of belief shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves. As such, it is highly recommended for students, scholars, and anyone with a keen interest in the historical and philosophical dimensions of faith.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformers; And the Theology of the Reformation IN introducing the present volume to the Public, the Editors feel that a few words of explanation may be desirable, in regard to the trust assigned to them, and the manner in which they have, in so far, attempted to discharge it. In the interview which, at Dr Cunningham's request, they had with him within a few hours of his death, he committed to them the charge of his whole writings and manuscripts connected with the College, to be deposited in the Library, and to be used and applied to any purpose they judged right; stating, that he gave them absolute power to do in the matter as they considered to be best for his character, and the good of the Church. The charge thus verbally intrusted to them was formally and legally confirmed by the Trustees acting under Dr Cunningham's settlement; so that the Editors became invested with the character of his Literary Executors, and with the full powers and responsibilities attaching to such an office. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation The advantages received by a historical student from the writings of others, he may be so fairly conscious of as to be able to enumerate them. But one's obligation to the quick ening influence and the scholarly talents of the associates with whom he is personally conversant are not subject to so facile a reckoning. In such a relation one may be aware, in some cases, of an unpayable indebtedness. It is the privilege of the present writer to acknowledge the debt which he owes to friends of this class whose intimacy he has been permitted to prize.
