Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Afterpiece to the Comedy of Convocation As some who may read these pages may not have seen the Comedy it may not be superfluous to state that it is the work of some Reverend, or Irreverend, member of the Roman Communion, that it has for motto, from St. Gregory Nazianzen, "Give me leave to be merry on a merry subject," that it is dedicated to "The Bishops of the Pan-Anglican Synod," and that in it are represented Very Reverend Deans, Venerable Archdeacons, and Reverend Doctors and Proctors, of the Church of England, in Convocation assembled, gravely debating the question whether, in that Church, it is heresy to deny the existence of a God, and as gravely coming to the conclusion that it is not; and afterwards, in private conference, trying to turn the claims of their own Church, as compared with that of Rome, into ridicule. There is nothing, perhaps, very extraordinary in all this, considering the source from which it comes. But that a journal of the standing of the (New York) Nation should endorse not only the "wit" and "humor" of the work, but "its logical conclusiveness," is extraordinary. If the Nation were as well informed on the merits of the controversy between the two Communions as it is on matters of literary criticism, it would not need to be told that while one half of the "logic" of the Comedy does not rise to the dignity of sophistry, the other half draws its conclusions from false premises.
