Book excerpt: We describe a new aerogel threshold Cherenkov detector installed in the HMS spectrometer in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The Hall C experimental program in 2003 required an improved particle identification system for better identification of [pi]/K/p, which was achieved by installing an additional threshold Cherenkov counter. Two types of aerogel with n = 1.03 and n = 1.015 allow one to reach ≈10−3 proton and 10−2 kaon rejection in the 1-5 GeV/c momentum range with pion detection efficiency better than 99% (97%). The detector response shows no significant position dependence due to a diffuse light collection technique. The diffusion box was equipped with 16 Photonis XP4572 PMT's. The mean number of photoelectrons in saturation was ≈16 and ≈8, respectively. Moderate particle identification is feasible near threshold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter reviews the preparation and study of high-temperature superconducting (SC) nanocomposites based on SC ceramics and various polymeric binders. Regardless of the size of the ceramic grains, any increase in their quantity results in an increase of resistance to rupture and modulus and a decrease in limiting deformation, whilst a similar increase in the average ceramic grain size worsens resistance properties. Investigation of the SC, thermo-chemical, mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties of the samples are discussed. Superconducting properties of the polymer–ceramic nanocomposites are explained by intercalation of macromolecule fragments into the interstitial layer of the ceramic grains, a phenomenon that leads to a change in the morphological structure of SC nanocomposites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on the design and commissioning of two silica aerogel Cherenkov detectors with different refractive indices. In particular, extraordinary performance in terms of the number of detected photoelectrons was achieved through an appropriate choice of PMT type and reflector, along with some design considerations. After four years of operation, the number of detected photoelectrons was found to be noticeably reduced in both detectors as a result of contamination, yellowing, of the aerogel material. Along with the details of the set-up, we illustrate the characteristics of the detectors during different time periods and the probable causes of the contamination. In particular we show that the replacement of the contaminated aerogel and parts of the reflecting material has almost restored the initial performance of the detectors.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the IX International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP 2006). This conference series is devoted to the progress of our knowledge about strangeness flavor in hadron and nuclear physics. Besides the traditional topics such as hadron structure, hypernuclear spectroscopy and weak decay of hypernuclei, a particular focus of this conference was on the properties of strange mesons and their binding in nuclear systems.

Book excerpt: A large area ring-imaging Cherenkov detector has been designed to provide clean hadron identification capability in the momentum range from 3 GeV/c up to 8 GeV/c for the CLAS12 experiments at the upgraded 12 GeV continuous electron beam accelerator facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The adopted solution foresees a novel hybrid optics design based on aerogel radiator, composite mirrors and high-packed and high-segmented photon detectors. Cherenkov light will either be imaged directly (forward tracks) or after two mirror reflections (large angle tracks). We report here the results of the tests of a large scale prototype of the RICH detector performed with the hadron beam of the CERN T9 experimental hall for the direct detection configuration. As a result, the tests demonstrated that the proposed design provides the required pion-to-kaon rejection factor of 1:500 in the whole momentum range.

These areas range from studies of the strong interactions that bind nuclei together to physics of the very early Universe and include such topics as neutrinos, hadron physics, spin physics, heavy ion physics, QCD and heavy flavor physics. The Conference papers include descriptions of searches for "new physics", phenomena that cannot be accounted for by current theories.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Lab experiment E12-06-122 is an ongoing experiment that measures the contribution of quarks to neutron spin. An important part of this experiment is the Cherenkov detector, used to detect electrons scattered off a polarized 3He target. Cherenkov detectors make use of the phenomenon of Cherenkov light, produced when a particle moves faster than the speed of light in the medium through which it travels, to identify particles by velocity. The previous experiment used a Cherenkov detector that did not operate well in the high rate environment in which it operated. The purpose of this experiment is to design and test a prototype for a new Cherenkov detector that will work well in a high rate environment. This report gives an account of the design, setup, and early data analysis of this prototype detector.
