Out of the white wilderness, out of the Far North, Jack London, one of America’s most popular authors, drew the inspiration for his robust tales of perilous adventure and animal cunning. Swiftly paced and vividly written, the novel and five short stories included here capture the main theme of London’s work: the law of the club and the fang—man’s instinctive reversion to primitive behavior when pitted against the brute force of nature. Includes The Call of the Wild, Diable: A Dog, An Odyssey of the North, To the Man on the Trail, To Build a Fire, and Love of Life

Book excerpt: Jack London's classic novel White Fang is here faithfully adapted to the graphic novel format. White Fang, a wolf-dog, must fight to survive, and humans are not always his friends, but in this touching story of bravery and animal instinct, he overcomes his brutal nature to settle, domesticated, in a comfortable home. Ideal as visual introductions to classic texts, Graffex titles are fast-moving, cinematic retellings of wellknown stories. Equally rewarding as comics, graphic novels or learning resources, the series uses specially commissioned full-colour artwork to retell some of the most incredible, influential and memorable tales in the canon of English literature. Speech bubbles feature direct quotes from the original text, running captions describe events in a clear manner and detailed footnotes translate challenging vocabulary and provide interesting background information. It's a wealth of key information that, critically, doesn't overwhelm or distract from the original story. Featuring photographs, paintings and maps, Graffex endmatters tell the story of each book in its wider geographical context. Text details the life of the author, the socio-political events which influenced the book and the impact the book had on the society of the time. Each title also features a double-page opening illustration and a full index.

Book excerpt: Radiant, lyrical, and deeply moving, this is the unforgettable story of one woman’s struggle to unearth the true history of Vietnam while also carving out a place for herself within it. Vietnam, 1972: under a full moon, on the banks of the Song Ma River, a baby girl is pulled out of her dead mother’s grave. This is Rabbit, who is born with the ability to speak with the dead. She will flee from her destroyed village with a makeshift family thrown together by war. As Rabbit channels the voices of the dead, their chorus reconstructs the turbulent history of a nation, from the days of French Indochina and the World War II rubber plantations to the chaos of postwar reunification.

Book excerpt: In the town of Danvers, Massachusetts, home of the original 1692 witch trials, the 1989 Danvers Falcons will do anything to make it to the state finals—even if it means tapping into some devilishly dark powers. Against a background of irresistible 1980s iconography, Quan Barry expertly weaves together the individual and collective progress of this enchanted team as they storm their way through an unforgettable season. Helmed by good-girl captain Abby Putnam (a descendant of the infamous Salem accuser Ann Putnam) and her co-captain Jen Fiorenza (whose bleached blond “Claw” sees and knows all), the Falcons prove to be wily, original, and bold, flaunting society’s stale notions of femininity. Through the crucible of team sport and, more importantly, friendship, this comic tour de female force chronicles Barry’s glorious cast of characters as they charge past every obstacle on the path to finding their glorious true selves.

Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About White Fang by Jack London White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876-1916) - and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. White Fang has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including a 1991 film starring Ethan Hawke.

Book excerpt: Jack London's novels and ruggedly individual life seemed to embody American hopes, frustrations, and romantic longings in the turbulent first years of the twentieth century, years infused with the wonder and excitement of great technological and historic change. The author's restless spirit, taste for a life of excitement, and probing mind led him on a series of hard-edged adventures from the Klondike to the South Seas. Out of these sometimes harrowing experiences -- and his fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Darwin, Spencer, and Marx -- came the inspiration for novels of adventure that would make him one of America's most popular writers. The Call of the Wild, considered by many London's greatest novel, is a gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man's world and returning to nature. Adventure and dog-story enthusiasts as well as students and devotees of American literature will find this classic work a thrilling, memorable reading experience.Of all Jack London's fictions none have been as popular as his dog stories. In addition to The Call of the Wild, the epic tale of a Californian dog's adventures during the Klondike gold rush, this edition includes White Fang. This edition features the tales of Jack London, a superb storyteller with a taste for adventure and an instinct for the fierce justice of the wild.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story that came back to me and that I made up some fifty years ago when I was in high school. I won an award for my story about this animal that was part dog and part wolf. He was pure white and had the body of a husky. His five senses were his extra special features, and they were more acute than a blind man’s by almost ten times. He was also graceful and could sneak up on someone like a sniper. He was very, very quiet. His master was the royal Canadian mounted police officer Captain Steven Pole. He loved that animal and named it White Fang. He was part of the RCMP and was a K9 specialist. Both Steve and Fang went out on a lot of assignments as their arrest record was A+. There is only one case not solved, and that is the death of his father while on duty in the Northwest Territories. It was thought there were escaped convicts trying to cross from Canada to USA by way of the Rocky Mountains or the northern lights passage by posing as a mature couple on an adventure. They needed a guide who knew the pass well, and that was Steve’s dad, who drew the duty. Fang was very restless all day around Steve. Finally, Steve started to feel something was wrong. His dad was not answering any of his pages or his walkie-talkie. Steve and Fang decided to follow the trail Red gave him. It was not long at all before all three knew something was not right.
