The sun had not yet appeared on the horizon, when, through the morning mist, Castillan saw a man hurrying toward the little church of Saint-Sernin. That man was the sacristan. He was about to open the doors of the sanctuary and to get everything ready for the daily service, for, during the week, it was Jacques Longuepee's practice to celebrate mass at a very early hour. "I am fortunate," thought Castillan. "There is a very natural means of having a discreet interview with the cure. I will confess to him, and, if I am not mistaken, my confession will interest him more than if I had confessed a half-dozen mortal sins." The inhabitants had not yet left their houses. Castillan could enter the church without being seen. It was still so dark within the chapel, that had it not been for the light coming from the vestry, the clerk would have difficulty in getting about. He kneeled at the choir-screen, and when the sacristan came to place the vases and the missals on the altar, Castillan emerged so unexpectedly from out the shadow, that the poor man uttered a cry of terror. "Do not be afraid," said Castillan to him in a low voice. "Do not be afraid, my friend. I am a poor traveler, and desire that after mass, your worthy pastor receive me at the stool of penitence." How could one fear a man who put forth such a plea? The sacristan, quickly reassured, pointed out a very dark corner to the stranger, saying: "The confessional is there, my dear sir. In a little while, M. Jacques will join you. To-day is not the day for high mass." "Thank you, my friend, pray for me." As he uttered those words, Castillan sought the sacristan's hand into which he slipped a piece of silver. "For the poor," he added, turning toward the confessional, where he settled...

D., a horse man, at dusk passed through the gates of Chateau Fougerolles, and took the road leading to the Dordogne. He encountered a brisk wind, which lashed his face; this the cavalier heeded little, but sat upon his steed as erect as a paladin in a coat of mail. At that hour, on that sequestered road, he might have been taken for one of those pirates, who live on the purses of others. However, he had no thought of concealing himself, nor of wrongdoing. Book excerpt: Today,Cyrano de Bergerac is generally only remembered as a lovelorn eccentric with a big nose.Edmund Rostand's famous play inspired by the life of Cyrano is a worldwide box-office smash but the man behind the legend is more or less forgotten. The real Cyrano was sharper, funnier and, ironically, more modern than the romantic hero he inspired. A death-defying soldier-poet in the age of the musketeers, Cyrano's duelling skills were unparalleled, and his wit was every bit as keen as his sword's edge. He employed his sharp tongue and satirical pen in continued criticism of church and state -- his harrowing personal experiences had made him a staunch opponent of Louis XIV's bloody foreign policy--as well as in defiance of social norms -- Cyrano refused to acknowledge his likely homosexuality as a sin: brave and independent thinking that was years ahead of its time but which meant that his life was in constant danger. Part murder mystery, part literary detective story, Ishbel Addyman presents a fascinating insight into the heroically courageous, sparklingly witty and unfailingly good-humoured man behind the legend.

The play, freely inspired by the life and work of the libertine writer Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), became one of the most popular works in French theater and the most famous work of its author, Edmond Rostand. It has also been adapted into numerous and award-winning film versions. Theater critics say that the success of "Cyrano de Bergerac" is mainly due to its conversion into a popular symbol, embodying the ideal of the people by presenting a man who despises the powerful, is courageous, noble in sentiment, sensitive, and capable of sacrificing himself for others' happiness. The undeniable fact is that "Cyrano," in its multiple versions, has captivated millions of people worldwide. It is a timeless work that undoubtedly deserves to be seen and read.

Book excerpt: One of the most beloved heroes of the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac is a magnificent wit who, despite his many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because of his enormous nose. He adores the beautiful Roxanne but, lacking courage, decides instead to help the tongue-tied but winsome Christian woo the fair lady by providing him with flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Roxanne is smitten-but is it Christian she loves or Cyrano? A triumph from the moment of its 1897 premiere, Cyrano de Bergerac has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the world. Its perennial popularity is a tribute to the universal appeal of its themes and characters.
