Book excerpt: Is your school prepared to deal with a crisis, whether it’s a hurricane, an earthquake, an explosion at a nearby chemical facility, an active shooter, or one of many other possibilities? Does your school have an up-to-date plan to deal with hazards of all sorts? Do teachers and other staff members know what to do in emergency situations to protect their students and themselves from harm? In this informative and comprehensive guide, school safety experts Amy Klinger and Amanda Klinger offer significant--and sometimes surprising--statistics on school safety, dispel common misunderstandings, and provide preK–12 school leaders with the specific information they need to prepare for and effectively respond to natural disasters, accidents, or violent events. Readers will learn how and why it is important to • Realistically assess threats and vulnerabilities. • Create and implement an emergency operations plan that follows government guidelines and best practices. • Decentralize authority and responsibility for crisis response. • Distinguish between three levels of “lockdown.” • Plan for short- and long-term recovery following an incident. • Make school safety an everyday component of school operations. At a time when schools at every level and in every community face the possibility of a crisis event, Keeping Students Safe Every Day equips leaders with the knowledge they need to give their students, staff members, parents, and the broader community confidence that their school knows what to do and makes safety a top priority.

Book excerpt: In most schools you will probably see one, if not all of the following: Metal detectors to prevent handguns and other weapons from being brought onto school property Students in standardized uniforms to prevent the appearance of gang affiliations Police officers patrolling the property to deter violent activity as well as respond to incidents Such evolutions have forever changed how we view the safety of our students. However, the phrase "school safety" goes beyond these issues of security put in place to protect students, faculty, and staff. Environmental factors also play a role. The Comprehensive Handbook of School Safety expands the dialogue on school safety to comprehensively address the spectrum of safety risks such as bullying, fire safety, playground and transportation safety, and more. Based on research and practical experience, it helps school administrators develop appropriate programs that protect all individuals from harm. Author E. Scott Dunlap brings his experience in OSHA and DOT compliance, behavior-based safety, and organizational safety culture to bear on the issue of school safety. He presents school safety from a holistic perspective and details vulnerability assessment tools and incident investigation forms to help schools develop a comprehensive safety program. By focusing on this range of issues, the book’s dynamic perspective puts the keys to achieving an effective safety program within easy reach.
Book Synopsis Going Back to School with District Worker’S Compensation and Employee Safety Programs by : Diane K. Schweitzer PhD RN CSRM
Download or read book Going Back to School with District Worker’S Compensation and Employee Safety Programs written by Diane K. Schweitzer PhD RN CSRM and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-09-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When school administrators think of school safety, they frequently think of student safety and security. School district administrators need also to be concerned about the safety of all adult workers including certified and classified employees e.g. administrators, teachers, secretaries, custodians, foodservice workers, nurses, administrators, bus drivers, maintenance personnel and others. Losses from injuries to employees result in disruption of the educational process, lost days from work increased insurance premiums and consequent loss of funding for core educational initiatives. Injuries can diminish in frequency and severity or be avoided almost entirely if administrators implement health and safety systems. The cost of providing medical care to injured employees establishes baseline data on which worker compensation premiums are assessed. Administrators could reinvest costs saved in workers compensation insurance premiums into educational programs for the direct benefit of students. A comprehensive safety system that confirms administration commitment to a safe working environment assures management commitment as a legal and ethical responsibility, promotes employee involvement, pinpoints and eliminates potential hazards, and encourages employees to prevent potential harm to other employees, teaching staff, and students. This text focuses on developing a successful workers compensation program and safety system for school district employees. The models and strategies may be adapted for use in school districts for reducing school injuries. School district administrators are frequently forced to do more with less funding, particularly considering the requirement to implement many unfunded mandates from state and federal governments. Dollars saved from improved worker safety and reduction of insurance premiums may directly benefit educational initiatives in school districts. Primarily, the funds for educating students may originate from saved workers compensation dollars.

Book excerpt: Violence among youth in public schools is one of America’s most pressing concerns. Once thought to be something only inner-city schools faced, it has spread to suburban and rural schools. There are no easy solutions to the problem, but this book explores what administrators and other school officials can do to structure school safety programs to curb student violence. An introduction provides information and statistics about the causes of school violence. Chapter One considers government legislation and resulting initiatives to reduce youth violence and improve classroom discipline. Chapter Two covers strategies for building a school safety program, and offers recommended and tested approaches for creating safety initiatives. Chapter Three provides additional information about school-wide strategies and presents model programs that can be implemented at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Chapter Four examines character-building educational programs and discusses training for teachers and parents. Chapter Five is a directory of organizations, alliances, centers, professional development groups, publications, and websites dealing with school safety.
