Book Synopsis Voyagers in the Land by : Nancy Schulz
Download or read book Voyagers in the Land written by Nancy Schulz and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the social and economic adaptation of Indo-Chinese refugee minors in the United States. Its objective is to provide possible guidelines for assistance programmes and refugee personnel. The findings are based on questionnaires completed by refugee personnel and unaccompanied refugee minors. The report is divided into three sections: the first describes assistance programmes for unaccompanied refugee minors; the second surveys the results of a questionnaire completed by 420 out of the total of 1,445 children in the assistance programmes; and, the third analyses two questionnaires sent to organizations involved in the programmes. The authors note that the assistance programmes include cultural and vocational orientation to the United States; occasional support for the refugees' cultural heritage; and, evaluation and assessment of refugees upon arrival to provide information for their subsequent placement and care. They point out that integration has been easier for those children whose needs were carefully evaluated. At the same time, they found that, in contrast with adult refugees, schooling and special English language courses have given the majority of the refugee minors a reasonable command of English. In addition, and again unlike their adult counterparts, the children tended to move more easily within and between their own and the US culture. The authors' recommendations include: 1) refugee personnel should be provided with better background information on the refugees' culture and society; 2) measures should be taken to reduce staff turnover in order to ensure continuity of care; 3) an evaluation should be carried out on the long-term effects of the assistance programmes; and 4) the similarities and differences in the integration process for children and adult refugees should be studied.

Download or read book Legacies written by Alejandro Portes and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One out of five Americans, more than 55 million people, are first-or second-generation immigrants. This landmark study, the most comprehensive to date, probes all aspects of the new immigrant second generation's lives, exploring their immense potential to transform American society for better or worse. Whether this new generation reinvigorates the nation or deepens its social problems depends on the social and economic trajectories of this still young population. In Legacies, Alejandro Portes and Rubén G. Rumbaut—two of the leading figures in the field—provide a close look at this rising second generation, including their patterns of acculturation, family and school life, language, identity, experiences of discrimination, self-esteem, ambition, and achievement. Based on the largest research study of its kind, Legacies combines vivid vignettes with a wealth of survey and school data. Accessible, engaging, and indispensable for any consideration of the changing face of American society, this book presents a wide range of real-life stories of immigrant families—from Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, the Philippines, China, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam—now living in Miami and San Diego, two of the areas most heavily affected by the new immigration. The authors explore the world of second-generation youth, looking at patterns of parent-child conflict and cohesion within immigrant families, the role of peer groups and school subcultures, the factors that affect the children's academic achievement, and much more. A companion volume to Legacies, entitled Ethnicities: Children of Immigrants in America, was published by California in Fall 2001. Edited by the authors of Legacies, this book will bring together some of the country's leading scholars of immigration and ethnicity to provide a close look at this rising second generation. Book Synopsis The Transnational Experiences of Chinese Immigrant Youth in the US by : Xiangyan Liu
Download or read book The Transnational Experiences of Chinese Immigrant Youth in the US written by Xiangyan Liu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailing ethnographic research conducted in U.S. public high schools, this text considers how Chinese immigrant youth's educational positionality and identity are shaped by diasporic and transnational migrant experiences. The Transnational Experiences of Chinese Immigrant Youth in the US presents a critical examination of themes relevant to Chinese immigrant education such as academic achievement, English language proficiency, and cultural and social capital. The intersection between diaspora and education is explored to highlight the existence of multi-layered youth identities, which exist beyond and between national boundaries, and which embody the concept of global citizenship. Building on this realization, chapters consider how institutional structures might be better designed to meet the needs of students who arrive in host countries due to larger global forces. This text will primarily be of interest to doctoral students, researchers, and scholars with an interest in multicultural education and the sociology of education. Those interested in the Asian diaspora, race and ethics, and educational research methods more broadly will also benefit from this volume.

Book Synopsis The Vietnamese Americans by : Hien Duc Do
Download or read book The Vietnamese Americans written by Hien Duc Do and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnamese first came to the United States as refugees in the 1970s, after the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese Americans, written by a former Vietnamese refugee, is the only in-depth resource especially for students and general readers with a solid introduction to Vietnam, the history of Vietnamese immigration, and a forthright analysis of Vietnamese Americans' struggles to forge a better future. As their adjustment process is chronicled from the perspectives of the family and ethnic community, the label of the model minority is debunked to reveal both minor economic successes and serious problems such as high school dropouts and gang activity. With the increasing emphasis in the curriculum on Asians and the debates on new immigration, The Vietnamese Americans provides an essential component to understanding the evolving ethnic mosaic in this country. After an overview of Vietnam, culminating in a brief history of U.S. involvement there, the U.S. Government policies on Vietnamese immigration and the eventual resettling of the refugees themselves in more hospitable climates, such as in California, are detailed. Do describes how early immigrants paved the way for later ones with the building of ethnic communities. Crucial issues in the Vietnamese American community, such as mental health and gang activity, are highlighted. An important chapter on employment and education trends reveals a precarious position on the ladder to success. These immigrants' impact on the larger society is explained with descriptions of two important festivals, Vietnamese restaurants, the Little Saigon enclaves, and political participation, including some pressure on the government to influence events in Vietnam. A concluding chapter addresses the future of the Vietnamese American community, assessing the model minority myth, economic survival, cultural preservation, political agenda, and problem generations and community development.

Book Synopsis Refugee and Immigrant Students by : Florence E. McCarthy
Download or read book Refugee and Immigrant Students written by Florence E. McCarthy and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on educational equity issues affecting immigrants and refugees around the world. Chapters highlight educational approaches that build from experiential knowledge, draw upon multiple languages, consider group identity, grapple with the complexities of inclusion, address family concerns, promote parental involvement, involve liaison with community agencies, and view cultural differences as educational strengths. While the book does not shy away from exploring the more challenging aspects of the refugee and immigrant experience, it avoids dwelling on victimology and rejects applying a deficit framework. Rather it offers hope, emphasizing the potential strengths of refugees, including their cultural capital and survival skills. The authors also make cogent suggestions for structural, pedagogical, and conceptual reform, with targets ranging from individual teachers to educational systems to social, economic, political, and cultural contexts.
