Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first modern scholarly edition of the acts of King James II's Irish parliament of 1689. Like all the official records of James's parliament, the enrolled copies of its thirty-five acts were ordered by William III's Irish parliament in 1695 to be 'openly cancelled and utterly destroyed'. But the text of twenty-five of these acts remains extant and it is from the earliest surviving copies that this edition has been compiled. It supersedes Thomas Davis's edition which was neither comprehensive nor based on the most authentic sources. The 1689 acts dealt with the land settlement, the war, taxation, the legal system and the constitutional relationship with England, religious liberty and tithes, trade and economic development, among many other topics. The acts show a Catholic governing class legislating both for present needs and for a Jacobite settlement that was not to be." -- Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the city of Calais, on the northern coast of France, one may look over the water on a clear day and see the white cliffs of Dover, in England. At this point the English Channel is only twenty-one miles wide. But this narrow water has dangerous currents, and often fierce winds sweep over it, so that small ships find it hard to cross. This rough Channel has more than once spoiled the plans of England's enemies, and the English people have many times thanked God for their protecting seas.

Document headnotes, questions for consideration, a chronology, a selected bibliography, and an index provide further pedagogical support.

Download or read book The Irish parliament, 1613–89 written by Coleman A. Dennehy and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish parliament was both the scene of frequent political battles and an important administrative and legal element of the state machinery of early modern Ireland. This institutional study looks at how parliament dispatched its business on a day-to-day basis. It takes in major areas of responsibility such as creating law, delivering justice, conversing with the executive and administering parliamentary privilege. Its ultimate aim is to present the Irish parliament as one of many such representative assemblies emerging from the feudal state and into the modern world, with a changing set of responsibilities that would inevitably transform the institution and how it saw both itself and the other political assemblies of the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After I began my researches into Irish history I became more and more dissatisfied with the existing stereotyped model of the supposed centuries old conflict with the English. One day I went into a bookshop to purchase a greatly-hyped History of modern Ireland, and I found that the chapter headings had scarcely changed in a hundred years. A version of Irish history had been set in the nineteenth century, and accepted as true ever after. Next, I happened to purchase out of curiosity a copy of Adolf Hitlers Mein Kampf. I was rather astounded to find that the version of German history Hitler preached was uncannily like the version of Irish history I had been taught in school. Both were derived from the racial theories of the early nineteenth century, of the special Geist or genius of each race, and the Darwinian Rassenkampf or wars of the races, resulting in the survival of the fittest or strongest. Thirdly, when preparing my doctoral thesis I quoted a world-famous authority on some point or another, only for my supervisor to ask me where I got that idea from. (He was an authority on the point.) I resolved to check every fact, never to rely on a single source, and to accept no mans conclusions merely on his reputation. (O si sic omnes).

Book Synopsis Imagining Ireland's Pasts by : Nicholas Canny
Download or read book Imagining Ireland's Pasts written by Nicholas Canny and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagining Ireland's Pasts describes how various authors addressed the history of early modern Ireland over four centuries and explains why they could not settle on an agreed narrative. It shows how conflicting interpretations broke frequently along denominational lines, but that authors were also influenced by ethnic, cultural, and political considerations, and by whether they were resident in Ireland or living in exile. Imagining Ireland's Past: Early Modern Ireland through the Centuries details how authors extolled the merits of their progenitors, offered hope and guidance to the particular audience they addressed, and disputed opposing narratives. The author shows how competing scholars, whether contributing to vernacular histories or empirical studies, became transfixed by the traumatic events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as they sought to explain either how stability had finally been achieved, or how the descendants of those who had been wronged might secure redress.
