Book Synopsis Transport Challenges in Latin American Cities by : José Manuel Vassallo
Download or read book Transport Challenges in Latin American Cities written by José Manuel Vassallo and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most cities of the Latin America and the Caribbean region face similar problems, including low quality public transport supply, lack of planning, congestion, and both atmospheric and noise pollution. As a response to these growing concerns, many governments are implementing actions aimed at encouraging the use of more sustainable transport modes and reducing transport dependence on the private car. Despite the advances gained through the implementation of these and other policies in LAC, there is still a long way to go, especially in the promotion of seamless transport systems at the city level, the achievement of financial sustainability, as well as the improvement of urban air quality. This study identifies a number of best practices for overcoming or working around these challenges.

Book Synopsis How Europe Shapes British Public Policy by : Morphet, Janice
Download or read book How Europe Shapes British Public Policy written by Morphet, Janice and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's relationship with the European Union (EU) is frequently viewed as simple by the media and politicians. In ways - never really explained - the EU has managed to 'take away' Britain's sovereign powers and has the ability to determine much of its legislation. The history of how this has occurred is never discussed, unlike other countries in Europe. How Europe shapes British public policy examines the development of the EU as a sectarian issue in the UK. It discusses the effects of disengagement through the political practices of policy making and the implications that this has had for depoliticisation in government and the civil service. It considers the effects of EU membership in shaping key policy areas - trade and privatisation, the single market and the environment, and subsidiarity in the development and implementation of devolved and decentralised governance. This book gives new and essential insights for students and practitioners of politics, governance and international relations.

Book Synopsis Reforming the law of taxi and private hire services by : Great Britain: Law Commission
Download or read book Reforming the law of taxi and private hire services written by Great Britain: Law Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This consultation paper presents the Law Commission's provisional proposals for reform of the legal framework relating to taxis and private hire vehicles. Taxis and private hire vehicles (PHVs) are an important part of local transport. They operate in highly regulated markets where safety and quality control are paramount. Licensing covers key areas such as the quality of services, the fitness of drivers, fare regulation and restrictions on the number of licenses issued. The current law on taxis and PHVs has been criticised for being complex and outdated. These proposals retain the important distinction between taxis - which can "ply for hire" on the street or a cab rank - and private hire vehicles which can only be pre-booked. But all vehicles would be subject to national minimum safety standards and, for private hire vehicles, these would replace more than 340 sets of local regulations. This will reduce the burden on business because, once appropriately licensed, a private hire firm could work freely across the country, without geographical restrictions. This would contribute to widening consumer choice and to making services cheaper and more competitive. The Commission also makes suggestions covering a wide range of issues, including improving provision for persons with disabilities, quantity restrictions and enforcement. [Law Commission website]
Book Synopsis Reforming Urban Transport in India by : M Ramachandran
Download or read book Reforming Urban Transport in India written by M Ramachandran and published by COPAL Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reforming Urban Transport in India is an attempt to take stock of the various issues our cities and towns are facing in the area of urban transport, efforts made and being made both at the policy level as well as the field level to address the problems, the ever increasing complexities of challenges in the area of urban mobility and some of the laudable initiatives on the ground to handle the problems. This book would be a valuable addition to the limited literature available on the subject of urban transport in India. The topic has not attained much prominence even in the broader discussions on the transport sector issues in the country. The fact that we address our urban transport issues in a casual manner but there is need to take them up in a focused and purposeful manner and this can no longer be delayed is probably the one loud message which is emerging out of this volume. The wealth of knowledge of the contributors, each one of them having huge experience behind them in this sector, makes the book a valuable addition to the literature and a helpful guide in policy discussions.

Book Synopsis Project CONTEST by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee
Download or read book Project CONTEST written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth report of the Home Affairs Committee (HCP 212, session 2008-09, ISBN 9780215539731) and examines Project CONTEST, the Government's counter-terrorism strategy. Project CONTEST was first developed in 2003 as a response to the emerging terrorist threat in the aftermath of the attacks in New York and Washington DC, in September 2001. A revised version of CONTEST was published on 24th March 2009. CONTEST has four strands: Pursue, Prevent, Protect and Prepare, and responsibility for CONTEST lies with the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism (OSCT), part of the Home Office. The Committee commends the dedication and professionalism of the staff and approves of the more open nature in explaining CONTEST to the public. The Committee believes though that the Government could go further by outlining more of the sucesses of the counter-terrorism operations. However, the Transport for London network remains vulnerable to terrorism, as well as the 2012 Olympics, with the Committee seeing a safe and secure Games as a litmus test for the Government's counter-terrorism strategy.
