Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution was one of the US Navy's first six original frigates, ordered as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Fast and heavily built, she was nominally rated as a 44 but mounted thirty 24-pdr and twenty-two 12-pdr cannon. Her most famous encounter, after which she became nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' due to British shot being seen bouncing off her hull, involved HMS Guerriere, which she smashed; the same treatment was meted out to HMS Java four months later. Now the oldest commissioned warship afloat in thw world, she is berthed in Boston Harbor. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history.

In Old Ironsides, Fitz-Enz tells the story of the ship, from its construction to the ongoing restoration efforts that keep it active today.

The venerable vessel, which earned its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812, is today permanently berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard, across the Charles River from its building site in Boston, Massachusetts. The historic frigate is open to visitors year round, with tours provided by the crew, active sailors in the United States Navy. The lessons in the manual are divided among three groups, corresponding to the three skill levels of the tour guides, Basic, Advanced, and Master. In addition to the chronology and major events in the history of USS Constitution, the manual explains the historical contexts in which those events took place. The text is written in an engaging and accessible manner that will make it attractive to anyone interested in USS Constitution or in the early U.S. Navy in general.

Book excerpt: On the successful completion of the War of Independence, the American navy was disbanded, and it was not until the late 1790s that a regular naval force was reconstituted. Provoked by the need to protect American merchant shipping from the belligerent European nations and the piratical Barbary powers, Congress decided on a programme of frigate building, which included the 32-gun frigate Essex. Designed by William Hackett, Essex was a typical medium frigate of her time. Working from both US and British sources, the author has reconstructed many previously undetermined details of the ship and in passing has rehabilitated the reputation of the designer as one who was responsible for one of the best balanced of that generation's frigates.

Book excerpt: The Story of America's Finest Ship As Told by Three of Her Finest Historians On October 21st 1797, the 44-gun frigate Constitution slid down the ramp at Hartt's shipyard and into the chilly waters of Boston Harbor. While the workmen were proud of their efforts, no one-but NO one-thought she would still be serving her country 210 years later. Yet the Constitution remains afloat, having survived three wars, service on numerous distant stations, duty as a receiving ship, extended periods of neglect and decay, and occasional brushes with the breaker's yard. She has survived all those tribulations to become the oldest commissioned ship still afloat in the world, and a symbol of the heritage and pride our country. Her story is told in a series of 34 short essays by three of the country's leading experts on the USS Constitution's history: Charles E. Brodine, Jr., Michael J. Crawford and Christine F. Hughes of the Naval Historical Center in Washington, DC. Originally published as: Old Ironsides: An Illustrated Guide to USS Constitution, it is brought to a much wider audience in this Fireship Press edition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famed as a classic naval duel, a one-on-one clash between two sailing frigates offered the victor immeasurable fame and glory. During the War of 1812, the Royal Navy and United States Navy squared off in four such duels, the most famous that between the USS Constitution and HMS Guerrière. Ships and tactics between the two nations varied enormously, with the American navy favouring a revolutionary design of frigate, with twenty-four pounder guns and heavy structural timbers, while the British, used to fighting the French and Spanish navies, relied on smaller, eighteen-pounder frigates. Through first-hand accounts of these four single-ship actions and fascinating comparisons of artillery, crew ability and tactical achievements, this book offers an unparalleled insight into the ruthless reality of frigate battles in the War of 1812.

Book excerpt: The American Revolution-and thus the history of the United States-began not on land but on the sea. Paul Revere began his famous midnight ride not by jumping on a horse, but by scrambling into a skiff with two other brave patriots to cross Boston Harbor to Charlestown. Revere and his companions rowed with muffled oars to avoid capture by the British warships closely guarding the harbor. As they paddled silently, Revere's neighbor was flashing two lanterns from the belfry of Old North Church, signaling patriots in Charlestown that the redcoats were crossing the Charles River in longboats. In every major Revolutionary battle thereafter the sea would play a vital, if historically neglected, role. When the American colonies took up arms against Great Britain, they were confronting the greatest sea-power of the age. And it was during the War of Independence that the American Navy was born. But following the British naval model proved crushingly expensive, and the Founding Fathers fought viciously for decades over whether or not the fledgling republic truly needed a deep-water fleet. The debate ended only when the Federal Navy proved indispensable during the War of 1812. Drawing on decades of prodigious research, historian George C. Daughan chronicles the embattled origins of the U.S. Navy. From the bloody and gunpowder-drenched battles fought by American sailors on lakes and high seas to the fierce rhetorical combat waged by the Founders in Congress, If By Sea charts the course by which the Navy became a vital and celebrated American institution.

In this new sphere, Aubrey is on the defensive, pitting wits and seamanship against an enemy who enjoys overwhelming local superiority. Book excerpt: The 'Granado' was one of twelve bomb vessels built to supplement the British fleet at the outbreak of the War Of Jenkins' Ear in 1739. Bomb vessels were a specialization of the warship into a ‘floating siege engine’, carrying huge shell-firing mortars for the purpose of bombarding stationary targets. This volume is of special use to both the scratch-build modeller and the reader of C.S.Forester who wants to know more about bomb vessels. It also provides insights about Jack Aubrey's first command, since the Sophie was also a 14 gun brig-sloop with a quarterdeck and stern windows. The aim of this book is to provide the finest documentation of this important and unusual vessel type ever produced, through a complete set of superbly executed line drawings offering enthusiasts a novel insight into ship design and construction. It includes a service and design history and a pictorial section emphasising close-up and on-board photographs.

Book excerpt: It was 1989 when I started building a large 1/4"= 1 foot scale model of Constitution and today, 16 years and 18,000 hours later, I honestly believe this is how she was rigged during her last chase, exactly one hour prior to her last battle against the British HMS Levant and HMS Cyane. I had already invested more than four thousand hours in the construction of this model, and had intended, upon completion of the hull, to proceed with the stepping of masts and rigging her just as I had done previously on other models. However, In February 1992, when Commander Martin presented me with an original typescript of Midshipman Edward Clifford Anderson's notes on the rigging of the ship in 1834-35 at Boston, the earliest such specific information known, I decided I would follow Midshipman Anderson's directions and record the progress, step by step, discovering for myself what was done and how. This meant creating additional scaled parts relating to sheer poles, etc. to simulate exactly how the masts and the bowsprit, etc. were stepped in this era, and for this reason. Due to the equipment available today, and rightfully so, I do not believe that Constitution, or any ship's from this era, will ever again be rigged, including the stepping of the masts, using sheer poles and tackle only, and so I chose, while this one and only opportunity lent itself, to show this pictorially.
