Book Synopsis Medicare's Midlife Crisis by : Sue A. Blevins
Download or read book Medicare's Midlife Crisis written by Sue A. Blevins and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2001-11-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know the real facts about Medicare? Even before Medicare was created in 1965, more than three out of four seniors were protected by a safety net for medical assistance financed by federal and state government revenues. The average life expectancy for older Americans was on the rise long before Medicare began paying their health care bills. Today, Medicare's insurance coverage is so limited that it doesn't protect seniors against catastrophic medical costs. It also fails to cover many routine health services outside the hospital, such as prescription drugs, dental care, eye examinations, and physical examinations. Seniors now are paying nearly as large a share of their income for out-of-pocket health care costs as they were before Medicare. But they cannot refuse Medicare's hospital coverage unless they forfeit all of their Social Security retirement benefits. And the federal government effectively prohibits Medicare beneficiaries from paying physicians privately for Medicare-covered services. Most Americans, and even most seniors, know little or nothing about Medicare and the efforts being made to reform it. Blevins examines the program's origins, evolution, and future policy options. She recounts how Medicare was created as part of a larger plan for universal health insurance. Blevins points out how Medicare costs grew far beyond the original estimates used to muster political support for the program. She finds that Medicare restricts health care choices, jeopardizes the doctor-patient relationship, and threatens to invade the medical privacy of seniors. We won't regain control over our health care until we learn the lessons revealed through an examination of Medicare's history and consider the steps Blevins recommends for dealing with Medicare today.

Download or read book Working the Federal Budget written by George D. Krumbhaar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do nude beaches and catfish have to do with the federal budget? Quite a bit, it turns out. Working the Federal Budget fills the need for an unvarnished, readable guide to how the federal government collects money and spends it. Centuries of political struggles over the size and funding of government have produced a dense set of budget-related laws, procedures, court decisions and outright improvisations. The resulting rules are legion, complex, and remain a secret to many. In this book, author George D. Krumbhaar unravels the complexity with a journalist’s eye for clarity and a lawyer’s eye for detail, explaining the system, plainly laying out the laws that lie behind it, and identifying the players that are central to decision making at various stages in the process. With chapters covering the grandiose (why we have such big deficits) and the picayune (PAYGO and its importance) in fascinating and often entertaining detail, Working the Federal Budget provides an invaluable and critical exploration of the who, the what, and the why of the budget process for readers with an interest in government relations and how the government functions—whether from Capitol Hill, the executive branch, "K Street," postgraduate studies or even civic concern.

Download or read book The Myth of American Inequality written by Phil Gramm and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal Best Book of 2022: Politics • Winner of the 2024 Hayek Book Prize, Manhattan Institute Hailed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of 2022, The Myth of American Inequality demonstrates that the federal government egregiously overstates the degree of inequality and poverty in the world’s wealthiest nation. In doing so, the authors--a former United States senator, eminent economist, and a former senior leader at the Bureau of Labor Statistics-- challenge the prevailing consensus that income inequality is a growing threat to American society. Getting the facts straight reveals that the key measures of well-being are greater than the official statistics of the country would lead us to believe. Income inequality is lower today than at any time in post- World War II America. The facts reveal a very different and better America than the one that is currently described by policy advocates across much of the political spectrum. The updated edition brings will challenge political debate throughout the 2024 election season and provide clear and convincing evidence that the American Dream is alive and well.
