Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the 1950 Iowa Corn Yield test to compare the performance of many hybrid corn varieties. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was located in each district. Each of the 307 entries tested in 1950 was planted in all three districts of a section. Fields in districts 2 and 3 were not harvested because of poor stands. You will find a map in the bulletin showing the division of the state into sections and districts and approximate location of the farms where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to make entry in the test. Ten widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing the hybrids tested in 1950. The index also lists the table numbers where the performance record f each entry is shown and indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- foreword, p. [690]

Book excerpt: This bulletin reports the results of the 1951 Iowa Corn Yield Test in which the performance of 261 different corn hybrids was compared. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was planted in each district except district 10, where the prolonged wet spring forced us to abandon our planting plans. With the exception of district 10 in the southern section, each hybrid entry was tested in all three districts of a section. The map shows how we divided the state into sections and districts and the approximate location of the farms where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to enter his corn in the test. Ten widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing the hybrids tested in 1951. The index also lists the table numbers where the performance record of each entry is shown and indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- foreword, p. [758]

Download or read book The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Joseph Lee Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1953 we tested 229 corn hybrids in the Iowa Corn Yield test. Each hybrid was tested at a minimum of three locations. The division of the state into districts and sections is shown on the map. Seven characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These included yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. Each hybrid was ranked by a performance score based on yield, moisture and resistance to lodging and dropped ears. You will find records in the tables showing how each hybrid performed for the above characteristics. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1953 is given in the back of this bulletin. A majority of the entries in the test were made by commercial hybrid corn companies. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association also entered 10 widely grown hybrids in each section as determined by a survey of farmers. The purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to determine the performance of hybrids. It is not a contest and should not be confused with the 5-acre Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest." -- Foreword, p. [2]

Book Synopsis Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture by : Petra Moser
Download or read book Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture written by Petra Moser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The challenges facing agriculture are plenty. Along with the world's growing population and diminishing amounts of water and arable land, the gradual increase in severe weather presents new challenges and imperatives for producing new, more resilient crops to feed a more crowded planet in the twenty-first century. Innovation has historically helped agriculture keep pace with earth's social, population, and ecological changes. In the last 50 years, mechanical, biological, and chemical innovations have more than doubled agricultural output while barely changing input quantities. The ample investment behind these innovations was available because of a high rate of return: a 2007 paper found that the median ROI in agriculture was 45 percent between 1965 and 2005. This landscape has changed. Today many of the world's wealthier countries have scaled back their share of GDP devoted to agricultural R&D amid evidence of diminishing returns. Universities, which have historically been a major source of agricultural innovation, increasingly depend on funding from industry rather than government to fund their research. As Upton Sinclair wrote of the effects industry influences, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." In this volume of the NBER Conference Report series, editor Petra Moser offers an empirical, applied-economic framework to the different elements of agricultural R&D, particularly as they relate to the shift from public to private funding. Individual chapters examine the sources of agricultural knowledge and investigate challenges for measuring the returns to the adoption of new agricultural technologies, examine knowledge spillovers from universities to agricultural innovation, and explore interactions between university engagement and scientific productivity. Additional analysis of agricultural venture capital point to it as an emerging and future source of resource in this essential domain"--

Book Synopsis The Economics of Climate Change by : Gary D. Libecap
Download or read book The Economics of Climate Change written by Gary D. Libecap and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While debates over the consequences of climate change are often pessimistic, historical data from the past two centuries indicate many viable opportunities for responding to potential changes. This volume takes a close look at the ways in which economies—particularly that of the United States—have adjusted to the challenges climate change poses, including institutional features that help insulate the economy from shocks, new crop varieties, irrigation, flood control, and ways of extending cultivation to new geographic areas. These innovations indicate that people and economies have considerable capacity to acclimate, especially when private gains complement public benefits. Options for adjusting to climate change abound, and with improved communication and the emergence of new information and technologies, the potential for adaptation will be even greater in the future.
