How soever the Lord will provide. Then the first son said: I will be a King or whatever ye choose to call me, Czar or President or Duke, for ye must have some one to rule over ye, and sit upon throne, and give ye ribbons to wear in your button holes. Then the second son said: I will be a General, a soldier to do your fighting, in case anyone comes to take away the throne of your king, or saith he is bow-legged and cross-eyed and his crown a misfit. Then the third son said: I will be an Admiral and carry the totem of our family to foreign lands, where the natives may behold its glory. Also when the King and the General may decide to go to war, I will carry them across the seas to kill other families, and bring home the spoils thereof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in Whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament Of the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research; or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's "Notes on the Parables of the New Testament" one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic "teaching by comparison" which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked; and to bring out - what in these days it is especially necessary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect Revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. What the Conscious (lod created is real and endures forever, and cannot be forgotten when once known; but the world of belief, or death, is only another name for unconscious ness. Being dead in the sense of unconsciousness does not mean that you cannot believe that you move and have life, for if you did not believe that the world of belief was real, it) would not accomplish that for which it was created, namely, the awakening of the consciousness of life within, where all knowledge dwells. Their own history showed that He was not the God of the Hebrews only but the God of the Gentiles also; and the King dom which their prophets foretold was not a Hebrew Kingdom only but a world Kingdom. And all they in the Synagogue says the sacred historian, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him'down headlong, but he passing through the midst of them went his way. Ever after Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God in parables that seeing they might see and not perceive. He veiled the truth which unveiled had been rejected with such wrath, and he did so that they might listen to him without perceiving the truth to which they would refuse to listen if they did perceive it, and that so he might conduct them to his predetermined destination while they did not even know that they were on the jour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Our Lord Interpreted in View of Their Relations to Each Other The aim of the present work is to present an exposition of the Parables of our Lord for popular use, not a critical commentary on the Sacred Text. The special feature in the design is an attempt to ascertain the relations of the Parables to each other. Contemplated as The Parables of the Kingdom of Grace, they are regarded as a unity, - a Revelation within the Revelation of God. This conception of the unity of parabolic teaching in the Gospels has determined the grouping of them, and also the interpretation of each parable in its order. The acknowledged eminent ability of existing works on the Parables of our Lord has led me through many years to shrink from publication of materials long accumulated, and used in a variety of ways. The special plan here adoptedhas, however, encouraged the belief that many whose delight it is to search the Scriptures, according to our Lord's counsel, may find some aid in their study of a peculiarly attractive feature in the structure of God's Word. At the same time, in preparation of these pages, I have never been without the consciousness of a measure of unfitness for the self-imposed task, acknow ledgment of which should here be made. For adequate treatment of the Parables, the artist's eye and the poet's fancy are both needful, and neither belongs to the writer. The lofty imagi nation of such writers as Jeremy Taylor and John Howe, Richard C. Trench and James Hamilton, Thomas Guthrie and William Arnot, had much service to render in the work of Bible exposition. No addition to such service is here contemplated. But the Parables present, besides, a most attractive subject for analytic treatment. This attraction has afforded me unabating interest in their study, and has induced me to attempt a Single contribution to the great work of Bible exposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Parables of the Kingdom The thirteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew 1s not only a very interesting, but also a very important chapter, containing as it does the unfolding of the mysteries of the Kingdom of the heavens: even the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God - Eph. 3: 9. This chapter contains seven parables which according to verse 53 were all delivered by the Savior up on one and the same occasion, and in these seven parables the Lord Jesus clearly sets forth the Truth concerning the establishment and the growth of the Kingdom of the Heavens in this age. In verses 1 3 we see that Jesus leaves the house In which He had been stay ing with His disciples and goes down to the seaside where He spake many things to the multitudes in parables and without a par able spake He not unto them. (v. 34. Then in v. 10 immediately after He had finished the first parable, the disciples asked Him why speakest thou unto them in parables? We. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prodigal Son: Four Discourses The following Sermons were preached in the ordinary course of my ministry. They make no claim to originality of treatment, but are the result of an attempt to realize as a life-history, the parable of the Prodigal Son. They appeal not so much to reason as to consciousness; and He who has all the hearts of the human in His keeping, has willed that some of them should be touched by these home-pictures and appeals. Many who have listened to them have requested their publication, and new circumstances have risen up around me which render resistance no longer graceful. Hence, on the eve of departure over "many waters," which will yet fail to sever me from the love of my country and of my friends, I leave this modest memorial, with the blessing of a full heart; and with the prayer that the Divine Spirit, who honoured the preaching of these Sermons, may make the printing of them yet more powerful for good. Matthew Left without excuse. As the relations hereafter to be rep resented are new, and bound up with His own divine per son and work, it is fitting, also, that they should find a new vehicle of expression. Not as the completion of the old, but as the beginning of a new dispensation, does Jesus now set Himself forth. It is no longer as a Jew to Jews that He speaks, but to men as men. It is meet and right that the language which He makes use of, accordingly, should not be that of any school, or sect, or party, but a language taken from the symbolism of nature itself, and common to all men'. The appeal He makes, in like man ner, is to the conscience and heart of man, and not to the intellect or logical faculty, for the reason that the kingdom which He comes to establish in the world is a spiritual kingdom, and one whose foundations are to rest upon the moral convictions of men. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament, Explained The Sacred Scriptures are the Word of God, written in a Divine way, and for a Divine purpose. The Divine Word contains messages from God, as a Spiritual Being, to men as spiritual beings. But, in order to bring down the truth to the apprehension of natural-minded men, spiritual truths must be presented in corresponding natural ideas, in natural imagery. "I, Jehovah, thy God, ... have also spoken by the prophets, and have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets." (Hosea xii. 9, 10.) Hence the Bible has a spirit and a body, between which there is the relation of correspondence, as inward and outward counterparts. The word "parable" is used in three senses, - I, as an enigma, or obscure saying; 2, as any figurative discourse; and 3, as a fictitious, but possible, narrative, invented to convey and illustrate a truth. The parables of the New Testament are strictly within the third class. But. on the same exact basis, there are very few parables in the Old Testament. And so, for the treatment of the parables of the Old Testament, the second definition is adopted, which includes, also, fables and visions. Every parable has at least three senses, - I, its narrative sense; 2, its figurative meaning, as applied to other natural persons and things; and 3, its spiritual meaning, illustrating principles operating in the mind. The system of interpretation here employed is that known as " The Science of Correspondences," made known to the Church through Emanuel Swedenborg. As it seemed best to have each explanation of a parable complete in itself, some repetition was unavoidable.
