Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 60s had the Beatles. The 70s had Led Zeppelin. The 80s had Michael Jackson. The 90s had Nirvana. The 00s had...???? That depends on who you ask. Some may chant Eminem. Others might shout The White Stripes. While the rest may surprisingly vote for American Idol. Musically, the 00s were a schizophrenic digital playground, where control over music was taken out of the hands of music directors and was placed back in the hands of the individual. Music flourished on digital MP3 players, where rock lived next to rap next to electronic next to country next to classical...and so on. Every artist had an equal chance on our personal featured playlists, because of this, no one band or genre dominated. Musical exposure was limited. This book hopes to right the ship, to set the course and dig a little deeper than our MP3 players allowed us. Taken from the website The Good, The Bad, and The Unknown, one of the premiere music blogs on the internet, come explore one of the most diverse musical decades yet.

Book Synopsis Classic American Popular Song by : David Jenness
Download or read book Classic American Popular Song written by David Jenness and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic American Popular Song: The Second Half-Century, 1950-2000 addresses the question: What happened to American popular song after 1950? There are numerous books available on the so-called Golden Age of popular song, but none that follow the development of popular song styles in the second half of the 20th century. While 1950 is seen as the end of an era, the tap of popular song creation hardly ran dry after that date. Many of the classic songwriters continued to work through the following decades: Porter was active until 1958; Rodgers until the later 1970s; Arlen until 1976. Some of the greatest lyricists of the classic era continued to do outstanding and successful work: Johnny Mercer and Dorothy Fields, for example, continued to produce lyrics through the early '70s. These works could be explained as simply the Golden Age's last stand, a refusal of major figures to give in to a new reality. But then, how can we explain the outstanding careers of Frank Loesser, Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fred Kander and John Ebb, Jule Styne, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, and several other major figures? Where did Stephen Sondheim come from? For anyone interested in the development of American popular song -- and its survival -- this book will make fascinating reading.

Book Synopsis On the List: 1980s by : Jason Preston
Download or read book On the List: 1980s written by Jason Preston and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 80s were truly a magical time. A time when originality was more important than success and our imaginations created unique and awe-inspiring worlds. We created worlds where cars could talk, zombies could dance, and phone booths could travel through time. Then you had the music. The music of the 80s defined the decade. We banged our heads to metallic maidens and twisted priests, we danced all night long to joyful seagulls and purple princes, we were badder than a musclebound man and we always fought for our right to party. Our appetite for creativity saw the invention of the music video. We turned audio into a visual medium. This transformed everything. Our favorite songs didn't just sound awesome but they had to look awesome, too. The music of the 80s wasn't just the soundtrack of our lives...it was our lifestyle. This book is a journey back to a totally radical decade through the bands that helped shape it.
Book Synopsis Appetite for Self-Destruction by : Steve Knopper
Download or read book Appetite for Self-Destruction written by Steve Knopper and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Appetite for Self-Destruction recounts the epic story of the precipitous rise and fall of the recording industry over the past three decades, when the incredible success of the CD turned the music business into one of the most glamorous, high-profile industries in the world -- and the advent of file sharing brought it to its knees. In a comprehensive, fast-paced account full of larger-than-life personalities, Rolling Stone contributing editor Steve Knopper shows that, after the incredible wealth and excess of the '80s and '90s, Sony, Warner, and the other big players brought about their own downfall through years of denial and bad decisions in the face of dramatic advances in technology. Big Music has been asleep at the wheel ever since Napster revolutionized the way music was distributed in the 1990s. Now, because powerful people like Doug Morris and Tommy Mottola failed to recognize the incredible potential of file-sharing technology, the labels are in danger of becoming completely obsolete. Knopper, who has been writing about the industry for more than ten years, has unparalleled access to those intimately involved in the music world's highs and lows. Based on interviews with more than two hundred music industry sources -- from Warner Music chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. to renegade Napster creator Shawn Fanning -- Knopper is the first to offer such a detailed and sweeping contemporary history of the industry's wild ride through the past three decades. From the birth of the compact disc, through the explosion of CD sales in the '80s and '90s, the emergence of Napster, and the secret talks that led to iTunes, to the current collapse of the industry as CD sales plummet, Knopper takes us inside the boardrooms, recording studios, private estates, garage computer labs, company jets, corporate infighting, and secret deals of the big names and behind-the-scenes players who made it all happen. With unforgettable portraits of the music world's mighty and formerly mighty; detailed accounts of both brilliant and stupid ideas brought to fruition or left on the cutting-room floor; the dish on backroom schemes, negotiations, and brawls; and several previously unreported stories, Appetite for Self-Destruction is a riveting, informative, and highly entertaining read. It offers a broad perspective on the current state of Big Music, how it got into these dire straits, and where it's going from here -- and a cautionary tale for the digital age.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Pop Music Aliases, 1950-2000 by : Bob Leszczak
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Pop Music Aliases, 1950-2000 written by Bob Leszczak and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recording Artists don't always enjoy success with their first release. A hit record relies on any number of factors: the right song, a memorable performance, a healthy promotional budget, great management, a spot of luck, and even some intangibles. Take choice of a name. For a single artist, duo, vocal group or band, the name can carry a lot of weight. Some recording artists changed their name to appeal to an entirely different demographic, like when country superstar Garth Brooks recorded as Chris Gaines to score on the pop charts. The Beefeaters became the Byrds—and they spelled the band name with a "y" in the wake of the meteoric success of the Beatles, whose letter "A" turned the image of a nasty bug into something intriguing. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel amassed a litany of aliases—Simon went by True Taylor, Jerry Landis, and Paul Kane; Art Garfunkel as Artie Garr; together they were Tom & Jerry before finally using their very ethnic-sounding given names. Bob Leszczak has amassed several hundred examples of musical pseudonyms in The Encyclopedia of Pop Music Aliases, 1950-2000, describing the history of these artists from their obscure origins under another name to their rise to prominence as a major musical act. Music trivia buffs, rock historians, and popular music fans will uncover nugget after nugget of eye-opening information about their favorite acts and perhaps learn a thing or two about a number of other acts. Leszczak goes the extra yard of gathering critical data directly from many of these famous recording artists through in-person interviews and archival research. Whether skipping around randomly or reading from cover-to-cover, readers will find The Encyclopedia of Pop Music Aliases, 1950-2000 a must-have for that music library.
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings by : Steve Sullivan
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings written by Steve Sullivan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From John Philip Sousa to Green Day, from Scott Joplin to Kanye West, from Stephen Foster to Coldplay, The Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings, Volumes 1 and 2 covers the vast scope of its subject with virtually unprecedented breadth and depth. Approximately 1,000 key song recordings from 1889 to the present are explored in full, unveiling the stories behind the songs, the recordings, the performers, and the songwriters. Beginning the journey in the era of Victorian parlor balladry, brass bands, and ragtime with the advent of the record industry, readers witness the birth of the blues and the dawn of jazz in the 1910s and the emergence of country music on record and the shift from acoustic to electrical recording in the 1920s. The odyssey continues through the Swing Era of the 1930s; rhythm & blues, bluegrass, and bebop in the 1940s; the rock & roll revolution of the 1950s; modern soul, the British invasion, and the folk-rock movement of the 1960s; and finally into the modern era through the musical streams of disco, punk, grunge, hip-hop, and contemporary dance-pop. Sullivan, however, also takes critical detours by extending the coverage to genres neglected in pop music histories, from ethnic and world music, the gospel recording of both black and white artists, and lesser-known traditional folk tunes that reach back hundreds of years. This book is ideal for anyone who truly loves popular music in all of its glorious variety, and anyone wishing to learn more about the roots of virtually all the music we hear today. Popular music fans, as well as scholars of recording history and technology and students of the intersections between music and cultural history will all find this book to be informative and interesting.
