Download or read book Thank You, China written by Pedro Nueno and published by Plataforma. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is certainly fair to thank China for all its contributions to the world and its generosity. Especially for Pedro Nueno, professor of management and author of this book, who has found China to be his best ally in promoting higher education and establishing business schools that have contributed to the economic and social development in different countries. The author reflects on the reasons why China is the only country capable of challenging the economic leadership of the United States of America. "Thank You, China" is the outcome of these reflections, as well as an analysis of a country that never ceases to amaze us with its capacity to generate employment, its contribution to technological development, its trade routes and its will to strengthen services such as healthcare, niche tourism, banking and financial services, among others. This is a book about the recent past, present and future of the Asian giant. Its history may provide us with some useful clues about its future: openness to foreign investment, steady pace of growth, and willingness to step in to correct market unbalances. The author concludes that if this trend continues, China will become sooner or later what we all suspect: the world's leading economy, and a true global power.

Download or read book Thank You, Mr. Nixon written by Gish Jen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed, award-winning author of The Resisters takes measure of the fifty years since the opening of China and its unexpected effects on the lives of ordinary people. It is a unique book that only Jen could write—a story collection accruing the power of a novel as it proceeds—a work that Cynthia Ozick has called “an art beyond art. It is life itself.” Beginning with a cheery letter penned by a Chinese girl in heaven to “poor Mr. Nixon” in hell, Gish Jen embarks on a fictional journey through U.S.-China relations, capturing the excitement of a world on the brink of tectonic change. Opal Chen reunites with her Chinese sisters after forty years; newly cosmopolitan Lulu Koo wonders why Americans “like to walk around in the woods with the mosquitoes”; Hong Kong parents go to extreme lengths to reestablish contact with their “number-one daughter” in New York; and Betty Koo, brought up on “no politics, just make money,” finds she must reassess her mother’s philosophy. With their profound compassion and equally profound humor, these eleven linked stories trace the intimate ways in which humans make and are made by history, capturing an extraordinary era in an extraordinary way. Delightful, provocative, and powerful, Thank You, Mr. Nixon furnishes yet more proof of Gish Jen’s eminent place among American storytellers.

Book Synopsis How I Survived a Chinese "Reeducation" Camp by : Gulbahar Haitiwaji
Download or read book How I Survived a Chinese "Reeducation" Camp written by Gulbahar Haitiwaji and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first memoir about the "reeducation" camps by a Uyghur woman. “I have written what I lived. The atrocious reality.” — Gulbahar Haitiwaji to Paris Match Since 2017, more than one million Uyghurs have been deported from their homes in the Xinjiang region of China to “reeducation camps.” The brutal repression of the Uyghurs, a Turkish-speaking Muslim ethnic group, has been denounced as genocide, and reported widely in media around the world. The Xinjiang Papers, revealed by the New York Times in 2019, expose the brutal repression of the Uyghur ethnicity by means of forced mass detention—the biggest since the time of Mao. Her name is Gulbahar Haitiwaji and she is the first Uyghur woman to write a memoir about the 'reeducation' camps. For three years Haitiwaji endured hundreds of hours of interrogations, torture, hunger, police violence, brainwashing, forced sterilization, freezing cold, and nights under blinding neon light in her prison cell. These camps are to China what the Gulags were to the USSR. The Chinese government denies that they are concentration camps, seeking to legitimize their existence in the name of the “total fight against Islamic terrorism, infiltration and separatism,” and calls them “schools.” But none of this is true. Gulbahar only escaped thanks to the relentless efforts of her daughter. Her courageous memoir is a terrifying portrait of the atrocities she endured in the Chinese gulag and how the treatment of the Uyghurs at the hands of the Chinese government is just the latest example of their oppression of independent minorities within Chinese borders. The Xinjiang region where the Uyghurs live is where the Chinese government wishes there to be a new “silk route,” connecting Asia to Europe, considered to be the most important political project of president Xi Jinping.
