He is known for his satirical works, particularly his 1848 novel Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of British society. Excerpt: "In the foregoing volumes of this series of English Men of Letters, and in other works of a similar nature which have appeared lately as to the Ancient Classics and Foreign Classics, biography has naturally been, if not the leading, at any rate, a considerable element. The desire is common to all readers to know not only what a great writer has written, but also of what nature has been the man who has produced such great work."

Book excerpt: First published in 1994, these two volumes are intended as a supplement to the four-volume edition edited by Gordon N. Ray in 1945-46. In writing to his broad range of correspondents, Thackeray produced a varied body of letters that will help readers to better understand his nineteenth-century society as well as his professional and private life — especially his relationships with women. These volumes contain 1713 letters: 1464 to and from Thackeray that were not included in the earlier volumes, and 249 with texts that have been edited from newly available manuscripts, and that thereby replace texts that were printed in Ray from incomplete sources.

Download or read book Thackeray written by D. J. Taylor and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and evocative portrait of one of the greatest authors of Victorian England Who was William Makepeace Thackeray? Was he the wealthy dilettante who came to London in the 1830s and squandered his fortune on newspapers? Was he the impoverished freelance author of the 1840s who scrapped for every penny he could get? Or was he the great writer who published Vanity Fair in 1847, skewering Victorian society and ensuring his literary legacy? Throughout the many phases of his life, Thackeray remained an enigma. He was friendly but standoffish, generous yet miserly, confident and utterly terrified of failure. A century and a half after Thackeray’s death, D. J. Taylor has produced a biography that tackles the complexities of these contradictions and restores Thackeray to his place in the literary pantheon. His fortune lost by the time he was thirty, his personal life in constant torment, Thackeray’s story is as dramatic as that of any of his characters. In Thackeray, the man can finally be seen in full.

Book Synopsis Thackeray's Novels by : Jack P. Rawlins
Download or read book Thackeray's Novels written by Jack P. Rawlins and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack P. Rawlins's study explores one of the great problems of mid-Victorian literature: the explanation and justification of William Makepeace Thackeray’s narrative style and structure. Rawlins finds that Thackeray in his novels of English society uses an exaggeratedly conventional plot structure as a means to comment on the condition of the novel in England. The frustration and fury that have traditionally been the response of the feeling reader to the excesses of Thackeray’s narrator are the result of a basic aesthetic conflict of which Thackeray wants to make us inescapably aware—a conflict between the dramatic action, which demands a commitment from us, and a narrator who feels that the commitment has been thoughtlessly made and who seeks to turn our attention to the didactic uses of the novel, to the lie of the realistic, and to other aesthetic and moral issues. Treating The Newcomers, Vanity Fair, The Virginians, and Philip in detail and the other works in the canon more briefly, Rawlins locates Thackeray directly astride the most serious aesthetic problem of his age: the status of fiction and its proper employment.
