Book Synopsis Peasant Cooperation and Capitalist Expansion in Central Peru by : Norman Long
Download or read book Peasant Cooperation and Capitalist Expansion in Central Peru written by Norman Long and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the research into regional development and social change carried out in highland Peru by a team of British and Latin American social anthropologists and sociologists. The area studied—the Mantaro Valley of central Peru—is one of the most densely populated and economically differentiated of highland zones; it is also notable for its community-based forms of cooperation and its high level of peasant political activity. The book presents a series of case studies that examine cooperative forms of organization in relation to developments in the regional economy and to changes in national policy. The analysis attempts to avoid interpreting local processes merely as responses to externally initiated change. It stresses instead the need to consider the interplay of local and national forces, because local groups and processes themselves affect the pattern of regional and national development. The case studies cover a range of political and economic topics, from peasant movements to the achievements and shortcomings of government-sponsored agricultural and manufacturing cooperatives. The concluding chapter, by the editors, explores the theoretical implications of these studies.
Book Synopsis Natural Resources, Environment, and Legal Pluralism by : René Kuppe
Download or read book Natural Resources, Environment, and Legal Pluralism written by René Kuppe and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law & Anthropology Yearbook brings together a collection of studies that discuss legal problems raised by cultural differences between people & the law to which they are subject. Most of the contributions to Volume 9 were presented at the IXth International Symposium of the Commission on Folk Law & Legal Pluralism, & focus on the subject of 'Natural Resources, Environment, & Legal Pluralism'. The natural resources which form the environment of rural people are subject to increasing pressures. Intensive forms of resource extraction increasingly endanger the continued availability & ecological quality of land, forest & water resources. Especially in regions inhabited by indigenous peoples, struggles over the control & social & economic function of natural resources are directly linked to conflicts over political & economic self-determination. Inevitably, the different legal systems, & the substantive & procedural possibilities they provide, become involved in struggles over political, economic & ecological values & objectives. The focus on natural resource management issues therefore is a particularly fruitful field to examine the contemporary functions of folk law in complex legal & economic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, this book examines differing forms of international, interracial working- class action and the relationship between workers’ struggles in the periphery and those in advanced capitalist countries. It analyses the nature of class alliances forged in the countryside and the urban sprawls of the developing world among workers, students and the unemployed. The volume draws on theoretical debates and detailed empirical studies dealing with a wide range of countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. Each of the sections is preceded by a linking editorial comment and the editors also provide an introductory overview. Reviews of the original edition of Peasants and Proletarians: ‘This is an important book both for historians and for social scientists. It draws attention to a previously underestimated labour force that has grown into a significant – indeed, indispensable – part of the international economic structure.’ Lynda Shaffer, Journal of Asian Studies, 39 (4) 1980. ‘This book offers a truly impressive and solid compilation of material on labour in the Third World. The sheer range of scholarship concerning many different types of workers over a timescale of nearly I00 years in countries and political situations as various, for example, as Lagos in the I890s, Jamaica in the 1930s, and socialist Algeria or Chile under Allende, is sometimes bewildering, but never fails to stimulate and absorb the reader.’ Paul Kennedy, Journal of Modern African Studies, 19 (4) 1981. ‘Peasants and Proletarians is a very major contribution. The editors' introduction, though brief, successfully raises many of these issues and outlines an approach to them...The twenty-one readings, concerned with early forms of resistance, rural workers, strategies of working-class action, migrant workers in advanced capitalist states, and contemporary struggles, offer geographical and intellectual breadth in their exploration of the diversity of Third World experience.’ Joel Samoff, ASA Review of Books, Vol. 6, 1980.
