Book excerpt: FABRIC[ated] examines fabric as a catalyst for innovation, reflection, change and transformation in architecture. This book explores the ways in which research and development of fabric can, and historically has, influenced and revolutionized architecture, teaching and design. Responsive, flexible, impermanent, fluid and adaptive—fabric interacts with, and influences architecture, offering innovative solutions and increased material responsibility. Foundation and theory chapters establish clear precedent and futures for fabric’s position in architectural discourse. The case study section examines 14 international projects through three different threads: Veiling, Compression and Tension. Case studies include a diverse range of projects from the HiLo unit at Nest and CAST’s fabric formed concrete projects to a discussion of the impact of fabric on SO-IL and Kennedy Violich Architect’s professional work, demonstrating new and fresh methods for addressing sustainability and social justice through the use of fabric in architecture. Through the work of the many authors of this book, we see fabric as drape, skin, veil, mold, concept and inspiration. Fabric, in its broadest definition, is an important and innovative material in the development of socially conscious architecture. Offering readers pedagogical and practical models for international projects highlighting fabric’s use in architecture, this book will appeal to the novice and the expert, architecture students and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: This book contains the research on modeling bodies, cloth and character based adaptation performed during the last 3 years at MIRALab at the University of Geneva. More than ten researchers have worked together in order to reach a truly 3D Virtual Try On. What we mean by Virtual Try On is the possibility of anyone to give dimensions on her predefined body and obtain her own sized shape body, select a 3D cloth and see oneself animated in Real-Time, walking along a catwalk. Some systems exist today but are unable to adapt to body dimensions, have no real-time animation of body and clothes. A truly system on the web of Virtual Try On does not exist so far. This book is an attempt to explain how to build a 3D Virtual Try On system which is now very much in demand in the clothing industry. To describe this work, the book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter contains a brief historical background of general deformation methods. It ends with a section on the 3D human body scanner systems that are used both for rapid p- totyping and statistical analyses of the human body size variations.

Book excerpt: Product lifetimes are critical for the circular economy, resource efficiency, waste reduction and low carbon strategies for sustainability, and are therefore of interest to academics from many different disciplines as well as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other stakeholders. The challenges related to product lifetimes must be tackled from multiple perspectives, making the sharing of knowledge and expertise from different disciplines particularly important. This book presents papers from the second Product Lifetime and the Environment (PLATE) conference, held in Delft, the Netherlands, in November 2017. The conference originated from the desire to bring together academic researchers working in the field of sustainability to benefit from each other’s knowledge and further advance the field. The book includes the 88 full papers delivered at the conference, grouped according to the following 7 conference themes: design for product longevity; product lifetime optimization; cultural perspectives on the throwaway society; circular economy and product lifetimes; business opportunities, economic implications and marketing strategies; consumer influences on product lifetimes; and policy, regulation and legislation. The book will be of interest to all those concerned with sustainable consumption, circular economy and resource efficiency.
