Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bladder Cancer: A Patient-Friendly Guide to Understanding Your Diagnosis and Treatment Options resulted from a unique collaboration between doctors and patients. It started when David Pulver was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2007 and got a second opinion from Mark Schoenberg, MD, an internationally acknowledged authority on bladder cancer. They formed a partnership--not only to treat David's bladder cancer but also to write a patient-friendly book for other patients diagnosed with this disease. The book combines expert medical information with a clear writing style that organizes and presents the information in the most patient-friendly way. When you are diagnosed with bladder cancer or have a recurrence of your disease, many questions start running through your mind. What does my diagnosis mean? What are my treatment options? How serious is my disease? Can I be cured? To grapple with these questions, you need to understand your diagnosis and learn about your treatment options-- so you can get the best possible outcomes for your disease. The mission of this book is to educate you about bladder cancer so you can understand your diagnosis and make informed decisions regarding your treatment and care. This book will help you be a proactive patient, have better conversations with your doctor, and become your own advocate in fighting your disease. What You Will Learn from This Book This book is organized into 14 chapters and 4 appendixes. You should first read Chapters 1-5, which provide information all patients with bladder cancer need to know. Topics include how to become a proactive patient, the anatomy and functions of the urinary system, how bladder cancer is diagnosed, and what you need to know to understand your diagnosis. The next step is to read the specific chapter or chapters that discuss the treatment options for your specific diagnosis. Chapters 6-13 include detailed information about the treatment options for the different types and stages of bladder cancer. Finally, Chapter 14 discusses the challenges bladder cancer survivors face as they transition from active treatment to follow-up care. In addition, there are 4 appendixes, including a glossary of bladder cancer terms and a list of bladder cancer resources for patients and their families. This book addresses the questions, concerns, and challenges that confront people diagnosed with bladder cancer and those who love and support them.

Download or read book Fast Facts: Bladder Cancer written by Seth P. Lerner and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the biology of bladder cancer has advanced remarkably since the second edition of 'Fast Facts: Bladder Cancer' was published in 2006. Five new immunotherapies targeting the PD-1 axis were approved in 2016 and 2017 for the treatment of advanced bladder cancer, reflecting this transformative explosion in knowledge about the biology of the disease. This new era of targeted treatment offers hope to patients, particularly those with advanced disease. However, for clinicians it means a lot to understand in terms of how these immunotherapies are integrated into the treatment paradigm. Who they are suitable for? When are they best used? What is the optimal sequence of treatments for individual patients? This third edition of 'Fast Facts: Bladder Cancer' has been updated extensively throughout by two new authors, bringing a fresh perspective. Key updates include: • the latest understanding of pathology and biology • current standards for investigation, imaging and diagnosis • the critical role that awareness of the significance of hematuria among patients and primary care health professionals can make to earlier detection at curable stages of the disease • the roles of drugs, surgery and radiation therapy in treatment at different stages of bladder cancer, and when and how best to intervene, aided by understanding of the risk factors for disease relapse and progression • a new chapter about immunotherapy for bladder cancer • future trends in a rapidly evolving field. 'Fast Facts: Bladder Cancer' is a concise guide that will be of value to clinicians and health professionals involved in the detection and treatment of bladder cancer. This highly readable resource provides a comprehensive and current view of this complex disease, enabling informed discussions with patients. Contents: • Epidemiology and etiology • Pathology and biology • Clinical presentation • Investigations • Management of non-muscle-invasive disease • Management of muscle-invasive disease • Management of advanced and metastatic disease • Immunotherapy • Future trends • Useful resources

Book Synopsis Bladder Tumors: by : Vinata B. Lokeshwar
Download or read book Bladder Tumors: written by Vinata B. Lokeshwar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bladder cancer is a common cancer of the urinary tract. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death among men and the seventh among women. Clinical management of bladder cancer is challenging because of the heterogeneity among bladder tumors with respect to invasion and metastasis, frequent occurrence of new tumors in the bladder among patients treated with bladder preservation treatments and poor prognosis of patients with tumors that invade the bladder muscle and beyond. Due to these factors it has been said that the cost per patient of bladder cancer, from diagnosis to death is the highest of all cancers. In addition to it being a significant health problem, bladder cancer is an interesting cancer to study in many ways than one. For example, Environmental factors such as cigarette smoking and other carcinogens play a major role in the development of transitional carcinoma of the bladder, whereas, schitosomasis, a protozoan infection results in squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder. Different molecular pathways with distinct molecular signatures appear to be involved in the development of low-grade versus high-grade bladder tumors. Currently being monitored by an invasive endoscopic procedure, cystectomy, with urine cytology as an adjunct, bladder cancer is at the forefront of developing cancer biomarkers for non-invasive detection. Due to the differences in the invasive and metastatic potential of bladder tumors, treatment options differ depending upon tumor grade and stage. New advances are being made in treatment options to improve the outcome and quality of life for patients with bladder cancer. Similarly, new molecular nomograms are being discovered to predict treatment outcome so that individualized treatment options can be offered to patients.
