Book Synopsis The Moving Tablet of the Eye by : Nicholas Wade
Download or read book The Moving Tablet of the Eye written by Nicholas Wade and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eye movements are a vital part of our interaction with the world. They play a pivotal role in perception, cognition, and education. Research in this field is now proceeding at a considerable pace and casting new light on how the eyes move and what information we can derive during the frequentand brief periods of fixation. However, the origins of this work are less well known, even though much of our knowledge was derived from this research with far more primitive equipment. This book is unique in tracing the history of eye movement research. It shows how great strides were made in this area before modern recording devices were available, especially in the measurement of nystagmus. When photographic techniques were adapted to measure discontinuous eye movements, fromabout 1900, many of the issues that are now basic to modern research were then investigated. One of the earliest cognitive tasks examined was reading, and it remains in the vanguard of contemporary research. Modern researchers in this field will be astonished at the subtleties of these early experimental studies and the ingenuity of interpretations that were advanced one and even two centuries ago. Though physicians often carried out the original eye movement research, later on it was pursued bypsychologists - it is within contemporary neuroscience that we find these two strands reunited. Anyone interested in the origins of psychology and neuroscience will find much to stimulate and surprise them in this valuable new work.
Download or read book The Eye Pt IA written by Hugh Davson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eye, 3rd Edition, Volume lA: Vegetative Physiology and Biochemistry is devoted to the vegetative physiology and biochemistry of the eye. The book reviews significant progress in the anatomy of the eye and its physiological and biochemical aspects, particularly the structure of the tissues concerning the ocular fluid, the flow of aqueous humor, measurement of the intraocular pressure, and the macromolecular composition of the vitreus. This edition is organized into four chapters and begins with an overview of the anatomy of the human eye, paying particular attention to the orbit and adnexa, the eyeball, and motor and supporting apparatus of the eye. The reader is then introduced to the formation of ocular fluid, the structures in immediate contact with it in the ciliary body, and the anatomical aspects of the vascular circulation in the ciliary body. An account of the chemistry of the aqueous humor and factors affecting the intraocular pressure is also given. The book concludes by discussing the structure and function of the vitreus, focusing on the gel vitreus and liquid vitreus, as well as the rheological state and concentration of collagen, NaHA and proteins in the vitreus of various species from humans to frogs. This book is of interest to students and researchers in fields ranging from ocular science to physiology and biochemistry.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Biology of Vision by : James T. McIlwain
Download or read book An Introduction to the Biology of Vision written by James T. McIlwain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is intended for use in a course for undergraduate students in biology, neuroscience or psychology who have had an introductory course on the structure and function of the nervous system. Its primary purpose is to provide a working vocabulary and knowledge of the biology of vision and to acquaint students with the major themes in biological vision research. Part I treats the eye as an image-forming organ and provides an overview of the projections from the retina to key visual structures of the brain. Part II examines the functions of the retina and its central projections in greater detail, building on the introductory material of Part I. Part III treats certain special topics in vision that require this detailed knowledge of the structure and properties of the retina and visual projections.

Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Lacrimal Surgery by : Mohammad Javed Ali
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Lacrimal Surgery written by Mohammad Javed Ali and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the highly successful and comprehensive text on lacrimal disorders presents the latest developments in this rapidly evolving field. The new edition includes six new chapters, additional photographs and all chapters now have a separate section on recent advances. Written by experts in the field of dacryology, this book is a practical guide to evaluating and managing patients with lacrimal disorders. It methodically discusses basic anatomy and underlying pathology, patient evaluation, and all surgical procedures currently used to manage such disorders. It thoroughly yet concisely reviews surgical modalities including the endoscopic and micro-endoscopic approaches and provides ample illustrations for a better understanding. Since familiarity with a surgical technique is incomplete without the knowledge of risk factors and red flags, the text highlights ways of dealing with surgical complications and failure. Further it discusses in detail controversial topics and treatment dilemmas and reviews the current consensus among the experts. This is an up-to-date reference work for dacryologists, oculoplastic surgeons, general ophthalmologists as well as fellows in training.

Book Synopsis Development of the Ocular Lens by : Frank J. Lovicu
Download or read book Development of the Ocular Lens written by Frank J. Lovicu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive view of research in lens developmental biology, emphasising technical and molecular breakthroughs. Elucidation of the mechanisms that govern lens development has enabled us to understand how the normal lens forms and how developmental processes are involved in the maintenance of its normal structure, function and growth throughout life. This knowledge is fundamental to our understanding of many lens disorders. The ocular lens has also become a model for understanding the developmental biology of more complex organ systems. In this 2004 book, leading experts in lens cell biology and development discuss lens evolution, induction, morphology, the regulation of the lens cell cycle and fiber cell differentiation, as well as lens regeneration. This book is an authoritative treatment of the subject that will serve as a reference for graduate students and research scientists in developmental biology and in the visual sciences, as well as for ophthalmologists.

Consideration is given to development, movement of eyes, vascular supply, retinomotor activity, intraocular filters, and tapeta lucida. Anatomical descriptions are accompanied by functional interpretations made in the light of current research. The book concludes with surveys of visual characteristics and abilities, such as visual fields, resolving power, and sensitivity threshold, and adaptations to the photoenvironment as shown by visual pigments and changes occurring in the eyes of migratory fishes.
