Book excerpt: The Tabernacle By: Jeff Clark The Tabernacle follows the sweeping 13,000 year history of two central Texas farm communities: Alameda and Cheaney. Searching along winding wooded trails, uncovering hidden homesteads miles from the nearest road and listening at last to the words of teachers four decades his senior, author Jeff Clark begins to hear the tale of timeless lands, and the lessons as it finally breaks open in his own life. This sprawling epic is full of firsthand testimony about the harsh settlement of the Texas frontier, as well as surprising glimpses into his storytellers’ twenty-first century lives. The Tabernacle will move you deeply, as it has moved within the lives of many generations encamped along the shores of the Leon River.

Book excerpt: The Laguna Madre is the only hypersaline coastal lagoon on the North American continent and only one of five worldwide. The lagoon is renowned for its vast seagrass meadows, huge wintering redhead population, and bountiful fishing grounds. In 2000, the Nature Conservancy, whose mission is the conservation of biodiversity through protection of habitat, recognized the need to amass all known information about the Laguna Madre and implement a science-based conservation agenda. From those efforts came the first edition of this book. Now completely revised and updated, this second edition of The Laguna Madre of Texas and Tamaulipas is the culmination of two decades of additional research and continued conservation efforts in the region. Nearly 100 years of literature on the Laguna Madre and surrounding environments has been synthesized here. With 150 figures and illustrations, the book takes a broad and comprehensive look at both the Texan and Tamaulipan Laguna Madre. The value of this book for scientists, conservationists, resource managers, and policy makers involved in the future of the Texas and Mexico coasts is clear. Coastal residents, birders, anglers, and nature lovers who want to learn about and take care of the Laguna Madre will find this to be an indispensable guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two and a half centuries Tejanos have lived and ranched on the land of South Texas, establishing many homesteads and communities. This modest book tells the story of one such family, the Sáenzes, who established Ranchos San José and El Fresnillo. Obtaining land grants from the municipality of Mier in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, these settlers crossed the Wild Horse Desert, known as Desierto Muerto, into present-day Duval County in the 1850s and 1860s. Through the simple, direct telling of his family’s stories, Andrés Sáenz lets readers learn about their homes of piedra (stone) and sillares (large blocks of limestone or sandstone), as well as the jacales (thatched-roof log huts) in which people of more modest means lived. He describes the cattle raising that formed the basis of Texas ranching, the carts used for transporting goods, the ways curanderas treated the sick, the food people ate, and how they cooked it. Marriages and deaths, feasts and droughts, education, and domestic arts are all recreated through the words of this descendent, who recorded the stories handed down through generations. The accounts celebrate a way of life without glamorizing it or distorting the hardships. The many photographs record a picturesque past in fascinating images. Those who seek to understand the ranching and ethnic heritage of Texas will enjoy and profit from Early Tejano Ranching.

Book excerpt: Heralded across the country in newspapers ranging from The New York Times Book Review and The Baltimore Sun to The Minneapolis Star Tribune and The Denver Post, and in magazines as diverse as Chicago and Library Journal, the Haunted America series has attracted widespread acclaim as a virtual spectral travelogue through the byways and highways of North America. Haunted Heritage: A Definitive Collection of American Ghost Stories, the latest volume in the series. Continues its recounting of supernatural explorations, collecting a comprehensive compendium of ghostly tales, not penned by fictioneers such as Poe and King, but passed on by word of mouth and preserved by memory as actual windows on our nation's haunted past. The authors have compiled an astounding collection of American ghost stories. Based on interviews with eyewitnesses, unearthed ancient archives, overheard tales, and actual paranormal visitations and explorations. From the "Haunts of Ivy," a survey of university ghosts, to an overview of spectral lights, from revolutionary spirits in New England to beyond the grave occurrences in the Badlands, Haunted Heritage is the ghost story collection for all of North America. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premier volume of the Annual Review of Cultural Heritage Informatics (ARCHI), edited by Samantha Kelly Hastings, is the polestar publication for cultural heritage scholars, professionals, and students. Featuring sixteen original works selected by the distinguished editorial board of international scholars, ARCHI presents a broad spectrum of the cultural heritage informatics field. Whether one is interested in cultural heritage preservation, digitization, digital humanities, user behavior, technology, or educational practices, ARCHI is the central source for current and emerging trends in the rapidly expanding cultural heritage informatics field. Major sections include Best Practices, Digital Communities, Education, Field Reports, and Technology: • Best Practices contributors, such as distinguished scholars Michèle V. Cloonan, Martha Mahard, Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, Abebe Rorissa, Jeannette A. Bastian, and Ross Harvey, explore the increasingly converging, distributed, and pluralistic nature of digital cultural heritage and suggest new perspectives on traditional preservation and access methodologies. • Digital Communities authors emphasize the role of cultural maps in interpreting digital representations and advocate for the preservation of digital cultural discourse. • Education offerings include an exploration of a current cultural heritage informatics educational program and an analysis of educational resources available to local history and genealogy collection librarians. • Field Reports case studies include active digitization programs, cultural heritage preservation initiatives, and developing cultural heritage research agendas in Ethiopia, Pennsylvania (U.S.), Australia, and Romania. • Technology for promoting the accessibility and preservation of cultural heritage is explored from the specific perspectives of a digital humanities virtual reality application, identification of a metric enabling libraries and archives to invoke analog video reproduction rights under the United States Copyright Act, folksonomies and other social networking tools as finding aid extensions, and a review of digital collection user studies. In addition to the five major sections, a nascent sixth, Reviews, section is introduced and the vision charted for its expansion in future volumes. Providing a compendium of current research, educational initiatives, and best practices, ARCHI is a pivotal resource for cultural heritage informatics scholars, practitioners, and students. By challenging readers to explore a variety of contexts and offering critical evaluation of conventional practices, ARCHI promotes new ideas and offers new pathways of development for the cultural heritage informatics field.
