Book Synopsis From Sunlight to Insight by : Geerdt Magiels
Download or read book From Sunlight to Insight written by Geerdt Magiels and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Who discovered photosynthesis? Not many people know. Jan IngenHousz' name has been forgotten, his life and works have disappeared in the mists of time. Still, the tale of his scientific endeavour shows science in action. Not only does it open up an undisclosed chapter of the history of science, it is an ideal (as under researched) episode in the history of science that can help to shine some light on the ingredients and processes that shape the development of science. This paves the way for a fresh multidimensional approach in the philosophy of science: towards an "ecology of science"."--P. [4] of cover.

Download or read book Royal Highness written by Thomas Mann and published by Onesuch Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ironic satire of a decaying German duchy and its rejuvenation by the appearance of an independent-minded American woman. Peopled with a range of characters from aristocrat to mad woman, this novel is a microcosm of Europe before the Great War. The book's driving force is the development of a love between the young Prince, hidebound by tradition, and the exotic, beautiful Imma. Written by Noble Prize winning author Thomas Mann, his careful depiction of a decaying society rejuvenated by modern forces illustrates in fable what he regarded as a universal truth - that ripeness and death are a necessary condition of rebirth.

Book Synopsis Syriac Christianity under Late Sasanian and Early Islamic Rule by : G.J. Reinink
Download or read book Syriac Christianity under Late Sasanian and Early Islamic Rule written by G.J. Reinink and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are concerned with the literary responses of the Syriac communities in the Middle East to the drastic political changes of the 7th and 8th centuries, in particular the Persian occupation of the eastern provinces of Byzantium under Khusrau II, and the Islamic conquests and Umayyad rule. Several studies discuss the influential Syriac works concerning Alexander the Great written shortly after AD 628, which present the Byzantine emperor Heraclius as a new Alexander; attention is given to their polemical and propagandistic functions, and to their influence on early apocalyptic texts which respond to the Arab conquests and 'Abd al-Malik's religious propaganda at the end of the 7th century. Other studies deal with the beginnings of Syriac apologetic literature in response to early Islam, discussing texts of the first decades of the 8th century. The remaining articles focus on the religious controversies in the East Syrian community in connection with the increasing political influence of the Syrian Orthodox in Persia by the end of the 6th and the beginning of the seventh century, and the after-effects of Syriac anti-Islamic apologetics in a medieval encyclopedic text.
