Download or read book Urban Design written by John Yarwood and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about three different types of continuity from historic precedent to current practice in the field of urban planning and particularly that of urban design. The book begins by defining, describing and analyzing the three forms, which are: • Urban conservation, • Cultural tourism, and • Permanencies or Persistencies of Form. The book cites examples of each such case which the author worked on. (However, cases concerning (i) the Middle East and (ii) war, disaster and disintegration, were not included here, because the author’s last two books dwelt specifically upon them.) Amongst others, this book includes designs from the following towns: • Urban conservation: St Petersburg, Russia; Greifswald, Germany; Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia; • Cultural tourism: St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica; • Persistencies of Form: Telford; Thamesmead, London; Tampere, Finland; Silvertown Bridge, London; Herouville Saint Clair, Caen; Tete Defense, Paris. Numerous drawings, prepared by the author (for the greater part), are included in order to illustrate the points made by the text.

Book Synopsis Mr. Lincoln's Forts by : Benjamin Franklin Cooling
Download or read book Mr. Lincoln's Forts written by Benjamin Franklin Cooling and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, Washington, D.C. was the most heavily fortified city in North America. As President Abraham Lincoln's Capital, the city became the symbol of Union determination, as well as a target for Robert E. Lee's Confederates. As a Union army and navy logistical base, it contained a complex of hospitals, storehouses, equipment repair facilities, and animal corrals. These were in addition to other public buildings, small urban areas, and vast open space that constituted the capital on the Potomac. To protect Washington with all it contained and symbolized, the Army constructed a shield of fortifications: 68 enclosed earthen forts, 93 supplemental batteries, miles of military roads, and support structures for commissary, quartermaster, engineer, and civilian labor force, some of which still exist today. Thousands of troops were held back from active operations to garrison this complex. And the Commanders of the Army of the Potomac from Irvin McDowell to George Meade, and informally U.S. Grant himself, always had to keep in mind their responsibility of protecting this city, at the same time that they were moving against the Confederate forces arrayed against them. Revised in style, format, and content, the new edition of Mr. Lincoln's Forts is the premier historical reference and tour guide to the Civil War defenses of Washington, D.C.

Download or read book Israel written by S. Ilan Troen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel presents a panoramic display of fresh interpretations and new research findings related to Israel's first decade of independence. Those years of rapid change are widely regarded as a formative period in the development of the state and the society. As new archival materials have become available for scrutiny, a new generation of historians and social scientists has begun to re-examine old issues and to raise new questions. In this context of academic ferment, scholars in diverse disciplines, of different generations and of opposing ideological orientations, have collaborated in this book in examining the period anew. Thirty-two authoritative essays offer new understandings from the diverse perspectives of history, political science, sociology, literary criticism, geography, anthropology, and law. The intention is to provide a wide-ranging reconsideration of post-independence Israel that will serve as a benchmark for future study and research.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Ryan wakes up to find his contractor dad building walls to turn their big old house into a duplex. The family that moves into the other side includes Bizzy Horvat, the pretty girl he has a crush on at school. Bizzy claims her mother is a witch with the power to curse people with clumsiness or, in Bizzy’s case, astonishing beauty. When a bee gets caught in Bizzy’s hair, Ryan acts so quickly and radically to save her from getting stung that he attracts the attention of a group of micropotents—people with micropowers. He soon realizes that Bizzy and her mother also have such powers. It becomes Ryan’s job, with the help of the other micropotents, to protect the Horvats from a group of witch hunters from their native country, who are determined to kill Bizzy, her mother, and all the other “witches”—micropotents—who have gathered to protect them.
