As a scholar and policy advisor, Vito Tanzi has made a major contribution to identifying links between public finance and macro and microeconomic consequences. His findings bear relevance in both developing and industrialized economies. The essays in this volume and its companion, Fiscal Policy and Economic Reform, highlight many of these interconnected issues, for instance: * the interaction between budgetary policy and economic aggregates, such as employment, inflation and growth * the implication of economic linkages for designing fiscal policies * expenditure policies and alternative deficit financing strategies * the trade-offs between macro- and microeconomic objectives The list of contributors includes Max Corden, John Makin, Ronald McKinnon and Richard Musgrave.

Download or read book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report written by Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Book Synopsis Do Mechanical Filters Provide a Good Approximation of Business Cycles? by : Alain Guay
Download or read book Do Mechanical Filters Provide a Good Approximation of Business Cycles? written by Alain Guay and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors examine how well the Hodrick-Prescott filter (HP) and the band-pass filter recently proposed by Baxter and King, 1995 (BK) extract the business-cycle component of macroeconomic time series. The authors assess these filters using two different definitions of the business-cycle component. First, they define that component to be fluctuations lasting no fewer than six and no more than 32 quarters; this is the BK definition of business-cycle frequencies. Second, they define the business-cycle component on the basis of a decomposition of the series into permanent and transitory components. A simulation study assesses how well these filters retrieve the cyclical component of a time series composed of a random walk and a transitory component. The authors also compare the cyclical component resulting from the application of the HP and BK filters with those obtained with the detrending methods proposed by Watson (1986) and Cochrane (1994) for United States output. Alternative methods are proposed to identify the business-cycle component.

Book Synopsis Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book Synopsis Financial Institutions Management by : Anthony Saunders
Download or read book Financial Institutions Management written by Anthony Saunders and published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson. This book was released on 2001 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text focuses on the risks faced by managers of financial institutions and the methods and markets through which these risks are managed. The context is the Canadian financial services industry. The text begins with thumbnail sketches of the industry, its member companies, their structures and the regulatory environment. It looks not only at banks but also at insurance companies, trust companies, credit unions, investment banks and finance companies, providing a holistic view of the challenges of liquidity risk, interest rate risk, market risk, credit and other risks in the global environment. This highly regarded text continues to take the same innovative approach as the first edition, focusing on managing return and risk. The book's central theme is that the risks faced by financial institution managers, and the methods and markets through which these risks are managed, are essentially the same, whether the institution is a commercial bank, an investment bank, a credit union, an insurance company or a finance company. A second theme that emerges in this edition is that the risks booked by the financial institution use risk capital and generate an expected return that should justify that use. The authors explain the latest techniques of risk measurement against the backdrop of the convergence of worldwide securities, investment, credit and insurance industries.
