This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pair of rapid tests for evaluation of the effectiveness of penetrating sealers in preventing corrosive chloride ions from penetrating concrete have been developed. The tests are designed to yield an indication of the relative performance of a sealer as compared with unsealed concrete. The first test is based on measurement of electrical resistance between two small electrodes created on a concrete surface by use of a highly conductive spray-applied coating. A criterion of 200 k-ohms after 4 minutes of test was selected for differentiating between effective and ineffective sealers. The second test is based on absorption of water into the concrete surface over a four minute period. Development and field trials of the two tests are described. The tests are applicable to both horizontal and vertical surfaces. Applications for the tests include quality control of sealer application, qualification of sealers under field conditions, and monitoring of sealer performance over time in a nondestructive manner.
Book Synopsis Techniques to Assess the Corrosion Activity of Steel Reinforced Concrete Structures by : Neal Steven Berke

This book was released on 1996 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever his name or alias at the moment—Henry McCarty, Henry Antrim, Kid Antrim, Billy Bonney—people always called him the Kid. Not until his final month did anyone call him Billy the Kid. Newspapers pictured him as a king of outlaws; and his highly publicized capture, trial, escape, and end fixed his image in the public mind for all time. He was only twenty-one years old when a bullet from Sheriff Pat Garett’s six-shooter killed him on July 14, 1881. Within a year Billy the Kid became the subject of five dime-novel “biographies” as well as Garett’s ghost-written account, and that was just the beginning. Robert M. Utley does what countless books, movies, television shows, musical compositions, and paintings have failed to do: he successfully strips off the veneer of legendry to expose the reality of Billy the Kid. Using previously untapped sources, he presents an engrossing story—the most complete and accurate ever—of a youthful hoodlum and sometime killer who found his calling in New Mexico’s bloody power struggle known as the Lincoln County War. In unmasking the legend Utley also tells us much about our heritage of frontier vigilantism and violence.
Book Synopsis Enhanced Coagulation Impacts on Water Treatment Plant Infrastructure by : Marc Edwards
Download or read book Enhanced Coagulation Impacts on Water Treatment Plant Infrastructure written by Marc Edwards and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New USEPA regulations require changes to water treatment that can accelerate infrastructure degradation. One recent regulation of particular concern in this regard is the Enhanced Coagulation Rule, which requires improved removal of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) from water supplies. One of the most common means of improving TOC removal is to enhance existing coagulation treatment processes by reducing coagulation pH or using higher coagulant doses. There is substantial concern that the lowered coagulation pHs and higher coagulant doses will significantly accelerate degradation of infrastructure. The goal of this research was to concisely describe what is known about accelerated degradation of infrastructure from conditions brought about during enhanced coagulation. It was anticipated that such an effort would allow utilities to decrease damage by learning from the experiences of others, reviewing of the literature, and executing some new experiments. Book Synopsis High-performance Construction Materials: Science And Applications by : Caijun Shi
Download or read book High-performance Construction Materials: Science And Applications written by Caijun Shi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today's society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.
Book Synopsis Evaluation of Sealers for Concrete Bridge Elements by : Kottke, Edgar
Download or read book Evaluation of Sealers for Concrete Bridge Elements written by Kottke, Edgar and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the test program reviewed in this report was to evaluate commercially available sealing products for use on bridge concrete and to evaluate the effect of abrasion on the performance of these products. One of the simplifying assumptions of the Alberta sealer test method is that the penetration of water and chloride ions into concrete are similar in degree. The reduction in water absorption due to the application of a sealer can be measured easily and allows an inference as to the reduction of chloride migration into the concrete. This test method allows comparison of the waterproofing performance of various concrete sealer products in terms of a percentage that compares the weight gained by absorption in sealed cubes with that gained by uncoated control cubes of the same concrete. The test results are organized into two categories of sealers, namely coating (barrier type) sealers and penetrating sealers.

Book Synopsis Application of the Rapid Chloride Permeability Test to Evaluation of Penetrating Sealers for Concrete by : D. Whiting
Download or read book Application of the Rapid Chloride Permeability Test to Evaluation of Penetrating Sealers for Concrete written by D. Whiting and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens for rapid and long-term (90-day) chloride permeability measurements were prepared from a conventional concrete mixture. Three penetrating sealers were evaluated, using different methods of specimen conditioning. Results indicate that the rapid chloride permeability test may indicate differences between sealers which are not apparent when subjected to long-term chloride ponding. The method chosen to condition the specimens prior to testing has a significant influence upon the results.

Book Synopsis Comparison of Two Methods for the Assessment of Chloride Ion Penetration in Concrete by : Eric William Ryan
Download or read book Comparison of Two Methods for the Assessment of Chloride Ion Penetration in Concrete written by Eric William Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The currently accepted method for assessing the resistance of concrete to penetration of chloride ions is ASTM C1202, commonly known as the "Rapid Chloride Permeability (RCP) Test." The test is time-consuming, laborious, has rather high variability, and, is to a degree, user sensitive, making it problematic for inclusion in a performance-based specification. A potential alternative to the RCP test is the "Surface Resistivity (SR) Test", a method which is dramatically easier, faster, and has less variability than the RCP test. The research reported herein was directed toward determining a correlation between RCP and SR test measurements for Tennessee bridge deck concrete, based on cylinders collected from concrete bridge decks being constructed across the state, and evaluating the appropriateness of the SR test as an alternative to the RCP test for inclusion in a performance-based specification. Results of the testing showed a clear correlation between the two methods and identified potential limits for possible inclusion in a performance-based specification.
