The book begins by discussing the fundamentals of flammability, measurement techniques, and the main types of fire tests for various applications. Building on this foundation, a group of chapters then reviews tests for key materials used in the building, transport, and mining sectors. There are chapters on wood products, external cladding, and sandwich panels as well as the flammability of walls and ceilings linings. Tests for upholstered furniture and mattresses, cables, and electrical appliances are also reviewed. A final group of chapters discusses fire tests for the transport sector, including those for railway passenger cars, aircraft, road and rail tunnels, ships, and submarines. There is also a chapter on tests for spontaneous ignition of solid materials. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Flammability Testing of Materials used in Construction, Transport, and Mining is an invaluable reference for fire safety, civil, chemical, mechanical, mining and transport engineers. In this revised edition, the latest information is provided on fire testing of products, systems, components, and materials used across these essential sectors, with all regulations and standards brought up to date. Book excerpt: NIST's Building and Fire Research Laboratory is responsible for research into building fires. It initiated a program prior to the events of 9/11 to put structural fire protection on a stronger scientific footing. The catastrophic collapses of the World Trade Center underscored the need to accelerate and broaden this effort to include fire safety design of steel construction. This report calls upon scientific and engineering experts in materials, fire protection, and structural design to identify the research required to underpin meaningful test and predictive methods for use in evaluating the performance of structures subject to real fires. Chapters: History and Current Practice; Fire Testing and Simulation; Fire Resistant Materials; and Structural Performance. Illustrations.

Book excerpt: The first handbook devoted to the coverage of materials in the field of fire engineering. Fire Protection Building Materials Handbook walks you through the challenging maze of choosing form the hundreds of commercially available materials used in buildings today and tells you which burn and /or are weakened during exposure to fire. It is the burning characteristics of materials, which usually allow fires to begin and propagate, and the degradation of materials that cause the most damage. Providing expert guidance every step of the way, Fire Protection Building Materials Handbook helps the architect, designers and fire protection engineers to design and maintain safer buildings while complying with international codes.

Book excerpt: The study was commissioned to analyze the needs and existing capabiliites for full-scale fire resistance testing of structural connections. The scope of work consisted of three separate tasks. Task 1. Identification of building collapse incidents: The objective of this Task was to conduct a survey of historical information of fire occurences in multi-story (defined as four or more stories) buildings, which resulted in structural collapse. Either partial or total failure of the structural framing members, and/or connections was considered to hav constituted a collapse. Task 2. Survey of fire resistence test facilities: The objective of this task was to survey private and public facilities (for-profit, not-for-profit; academic, local, state and federal government; military and civilian; domestic and international) capable of testing structural integrity of building elements under fire conditions to establish the current global research capabilities in structural fire protection. Task 3. Needs assessment: the objective of this task was to perform an assessment of the need for additional testing and/or experimental facilities to support the development of predictive structural fire protection methods within actual buildings; and if a need does exist, options for meeting those needs.

Citing various federal, state, local, and industry voluntary standards that apply to textiles, foams, plastics, and composites used in carpeting/floor-coverings, draperies, mattress, upholstered furniture, and wall-coverings (interior finish.) This book describes tests ranging from cigarette ignition resistance to fill-scale room fire tests. Learn the basics of each fire test including the values needed to pass the tests. Each summary is accompanied by an easy to read sketch which gives the reader a clear indication what a product must undergo during the test. Summaries and sketches are derived from standards issued by ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials), ICC (International Code Council), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), City of Boston, Canada/ULC, and the State of California, and federal requirements contained in the two major model building codes promulgated by NFPA and ICC.

Book excerpt: Toxic fire effluents are responsible for the majority of fire deaths, and an increasing large majority of fire injuries, driven by the widespread and increasing use of synthetic polymers. Fire safety has focused on preventing ignition and reducing flame spread through reducing the rate of heat release, while neglecting the important issue of fire toxicity. This is the first reference work on fire toxicity and the only scientific publication on the subject in the last 15 years. Assessment of toxic effects of fires is increasingly being recognised as a key factor in the assessment of fire hazards. This book raises important issues including the types of toxic effluents that different fires produce, their physiological effects, methods for generation and assessment of fire toxicity, current and proposed regulations and approaches to modelling the toxic impact of fires. The contributors to Fire toxicity represent an international team of the leading experts in each aspect of this challenging and important field. This book provides an important reference work for professionals in the fire community, including fire fighters, fire investigators, regulators, fire safety engineers, and formulators of fire-safe materials. It will also prove invaluable to researchers in academia and industry. Investigates the controversial subject of toxic effluents as the cause of the majority of fire deaths and injuries Describes the different types of toxic effluents and the specific fires that they produce, their physiological effects and methods for generation Provides an overview of national and international fire safety regulations including current and proposed regulations such as a standardized framework for prediction of fire gas toxicity
