Download or read book Mid-Wicket Tales written by S. Giridhar and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with the passion of a fan and knowledge of a cricketer, Mid-Wicket Tales: From Trumper to Tendulkar is for all genuine lovers of cricket from every cricketing nation. It celebrates cricket in all its hues and brings alive the rich history, romance and technical nuances of the game, where diligent research and analysis is blended with rare and interesting anecdotes. Even as the essays reflect the authors’ passion for the game, there is a perspective, balance and tolerant objectivity right through the book. Thus, if they lavish praise on Rahul Dravid for his batting or the wondrous all-round skills of Garry Sobers or the incomparable slip catching of Bobby Simpson, they also admire the less successful test cricketers, for there are just a few thousand test players in 137 years of international cricket. It is the sort of book one can reach out and spend 30 minutes on any number of occasions, just like meeting old friends.

Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.

Download or read book Edible Insects written by Arnold van Huis and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edible insects have always been a part of human diets, but in some societies there remains a degree of disdain and disgust for their consumption. Although the majority of consumed insects are gathered in forest habitats, mass-rearing systems are being developed in many countries. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.

Book Synopsis The Dictionary of Cricket by : Michael Rundell
Download or read book The Dictionary of Cricket written by Michael Rundell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of cricket is as complex as the game itself--quite a statement, given that Americans are, on the whole, mystified by the sport. But now, anyone wishing to appear literate and informed in the presence of skilled batsmen can turn to The Dictionary of Cricket for an indispensable guide to the language and the game. Readers of this definitive and delightful mixture of history, etymology, and social comment will be able to amaze their friends with astute asides incorporating such terms as "featherbed" (a very easy-paced wicket offering no encouragement to the bowlers and providing favorable batting conditions), "Kookaburra ball" (a hard, resilient type of cricket ball widely used in Australia), and "boot hill" (a very close fielding position in front of the wicket, such as "silly point" or "forward short leg"). Providing full and clear definitions of each item, supported by extensive and entertaining examples of its use, The Dictionary offers coverage of historical and present day cricket terms; quotations from a wide vareity of sources, including newspapers from around the world as far back as the 18th century; technical, historical, and legal information relating to a term; and--invaluable for recent converts--ample line drawings to illustrate key concepts, particularly those relating to rules of play or techniques. Whether or not they know a "googly" from a "yorker," The Dictionary of Cricket will bowl over anyone with an interest in international sport and British culture.
