Book excerpt: As old as ancient Rome, tessellated patterns can be seen in many places today: in Victor Vasarely's black-and-white paintings, in the designs of Ensor Holiday and M. C. Escher, in Spirograph drawings, and even in computer. John Willson, a research chemist, artist, and teacher, has been creating these dazzling "op art" designs for years. Now, he brings his special expertise to this unusual coloring book. Here you'll find complete information on tessellations and their creation, including: • Definition of a tessellation • History of tessellated designs, beginning with their origin in Rome • Basic kinds of tessellations and how they are formed • Detailed instructions for creating your own unique designs from common geometrical shapes A full 179 figures illustrate the clearly written text. Also included is a special section of 32 full-page plates of tessellations, ready to be colored any way you wish. This is your best introduction to an unusual and rewarding pastime that will afford you many hours of creative satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Tessellations: Mathematics, Art and Recreation aims to present a comprehensive introduction to tessellations (tiling) at a level accessible to non-specialists. Additionally, it covers techniques, tips, and templates to facilitate the creation of mathematical art based on tessellations. Inclusion of special topics like spiral tilings and tessellation metamorphoses allows the reader to explore beautiful and entertaining math and art. The book has a particular focus on ‘Escheresque’ designs, in which the individual tiles are recognizable real-world motifs. These are extremely popular with students and math hobbyists but are typically very challenging to execute. Techniques demonstrated in the book are aimed at making these designs more achievable. Going beyond planar designs, the book contains numerous nets of polyhedra and templates for applying Escheresque designs to them. Activities and worksheets are spread throughout the book, and examples of real-world tessellations are also provided. Key features Introduces the mathematics of tessellations, including symmetry Covers polygonal, aperiodic, and non-Euclidean tilings Contains tutorial content on designing and drawing Escheresque tessellations Highlights numerous examples of tessellations in the real world Activities for individuals or classes Filled with templates to aid in creating Escheresque tessellations Treats special topics like tiling rosettes, fractal tessellations, and decoration of tiles

Book excerpt: With a prologue by Tomoko Fuse, the worldwide renowned Japanese origami master, the book contains 26 of my favourite tessellations, along other designs derived from those models (3 boxes and 2 "omiyage/tato). The book starts with an introduction to the origins and history of tessellations and describes the techniques and materials needed by those who want to begin with this kind of origami. The models are sorted based on the twists used in each one and include suggestions based on my own folding experience. For each model, a CP (crease pattern) is included, along with step by step instructions to fold it. Those instructions contain diagrams and their related text. At the end of each model you can see the picture of the finished model (usually in the extended version). Scattered between the different models, the reader can see the original hand drawn diagrams by Alejandra Zapico, that were the base of the final computer drawn diagrams. At the end of the book, there are several appendices, such as a small english-spanish origami dictionary, the symbol guide for those used in the book and several references related to tessellations.

Book excerpt: Tackling a topic that has particular appeal in the age of digital design, this well-founded introduction to the subject of parquet deformation fills a gap. These subtle, intricate geometric transformations, best known through the "Metamorphosis" series by M. C. Escher, were introduced to design curricula by American professor William S. Huff in the 1960s. The book brings together scholarly articles by the most important authors in the field and material collected in the archives of the Ulm School of Design in Germany, juxtaposed with extensive illustrations of two- and three-dimensional works created at the Vienna University of Technology. Written for anyone interested in the fields of design and geometry, this book aims to inform and inspire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers methods of Mathematical Morphology to model and simulate random sets and functions (scalar and multivariate). The introduced models concern many physical situations in heterogeneous media, where a probabilistic approach is required, like fracture statistics of materials, scaling up of permeability in porous media, electron microscopy images (including multispectral images), rough surfaces, multi-component composites, biological tissues, textures for image coding and synthesis. The common feature of these random structures is their domain of definition in n dimensions, requiring more general models than standard Stochastic Processes. The main topics of the book cover an introduction to the theory of random sets, random space tessellations, Boolean random sets and functions, space-time random sets and functions (Dead Leaves, Sequential Alternate models, Reaction-Diffusion), prediction of effective properties of random media, and probabilistic fracture theories.

Book excerpt: The main focus of this unique book is an in-depth examination of the polygonal technique; the primary method used by master artists of the past in creating Islamic geometric patterns. The author details the design methodology responsible for this all-but-lost art form and presents evidence for its use from the historical record, both of which are vital contributions to the understanding of this ornamental tradition. Additionally, the author examines the historical development of Islamic geometric patterns, the significance of geometric design within the broader context of Islamic ornament as a whole, the formative role that geometry plays throughout the Islamic ornamental arts (including calligraphy, the floral idiom, dome decoration, geometric patterns, and more), and the underexamined question of pattern classification. Featuring over 600 beautiful color images, Islamic Geometric Patterns: Their Historical Development and Traditional Methods of Con struction is a valuable addition to the literature of Islamic art, architecture and geometric patterns. This book is ideal for students and scholars of geometry, the history of mathematics, and the history of Islamic art, architecture, and culture. In addition, artists, designers, craftspeople, and architects will all find this book an exceptionally informative and useful asset in their fields. Jay Bonner is an architectural ornamentalist and unaffiliated scholar of Islamic geometric design. He received his MDes from the Royal College of Art in London (1983). He has contributed ornamental designs for many international architectural projects, including the expansion of both the al-Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) in Mecca, and the al-Masjid an Nawabi (Prophet’s Mosque) in Medina, as well the Tomb of Sheikh Hujwiri in Lahore, and the Ismaili Centre in London – to name but a few. He is committed to the revitalization of Islamic geometric design through the teaching of traditional methodological practices. To this end, in addition to publishing, Jay Bonner has lectured and taught design seminars at many universities and conferences in North America, Europe, North Africa and Asia.
