This book was released on 1920 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatise of St. Bernard De Gratia et Libero Arbitrio was written at some time shorly previous to the year 1128, and therefore the author had attained his thirty-eighth year. The subject of the treatise was suggested, as is plain from the text itself, as the result of a public, or at any rate semi-public, discussion with some person unknown, in which St. Bernard, in strongly commending the work of grace, had seemed to lay himself open to the charge of unduly minimizing the function of free will. An attempt has been made to present the argument of the treatise by means of a synopsis, in which it is sought to familiarize the reader with the technology of the original, an important consideration from a theological point of view. - Introduction.

Book Synopsis Baptism of Desire and Christian Salvation by : Lusvardi Sj Anthony R
Download or read book Baptism of Desire and Christian Salvation written by Lusvardi Sj Anthony R and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2024-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belief in the necessity of baptism for salvation is rooted in the New Testament and was forcefully affirmed by the Church Fathers, yet today this belief is treated with unease if not ignored altogether. Over the course of centuries, Catholic theology has wrestled with a doctrine--baptism of desire--that both preserves this fundamental principle and allows for salvation in hard cases, such as catechumens dying unexpectedly. Baptism of Desire and Christian Salvation traces this doctrine's varied history, from its genesis in a fourth century funeral oration given by Ambrose of Milan to its uneasy position in the Anonymous Christianity of Karl Rahner. More than a history, however, this book raises questions about the nature of religious ritual and the sacraments, the mission of the Church, and the essence of salvation. Arguing that theologians of the past two centuries have tended to downplay the role of the sacraments when discussing salvation, Lusvardi suggests that baptism should remain our theological starting point. Engaging with the theological tradition and at times challenging the conventional wisdom, Baptism of Desire and Christian Salvation shows how such a sacramental approach can offer credible--and sometimes surprising--responses to questions related to the salvation of non-Christians, the fate of unbaptized infants, and the relevance of the Church's mission today.

Book Synopsis Cosmic Prayer and Guided Transformation by : Robert Govaerts
Download or read book Cosmic Prayer and Guided Transformation written by Robert Govaerts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a realistic and thoroughly spiritual outlook upon the entire created reality. It lets us envisage that various created entities are participant in a relationship with God that becomes increasingly one of an intimate personal quality; that is, a relationship of love. It thus invites discernment that the universal reality is valuable in its own right and not only as a good for the use of humanity. Drawing mainly upon Scripture, ancient writers (especially Maximus the Confessor), as well as contemporary natural sciences, this book encourages the reader to perceive human salvation not as a lifting of humanity out of creation, but as a transformation into God's presence in the midst of the wider created order. It shows that Christian faith at its best does not exclude the wider creation but provides us with insight and hope for a harmonious being-in-God that is inclusive of creation. It shows that Christian faith can be a resource that helps overcome the ecological crisis.

Book Synopsis Christian Initiation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit by : Kilian McDonnell
Download or read book Christian Initiation and Baptism in the Holy Spirit written by Kilian McDonnell and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now the teaching on baptism in the Holy Spirit has been based on a few scriptural texts, whose interpretation was disputed. This doubt cast its shadow on those who promote baptism in the Holy Spirit. Now new evidence has been found in early post-biblical authors (Tertullian, Hilary of Poitiers, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, Philoxenus, and the Syrians) which demonstrates that what is called baptism in the Holy Spirit was integral to Christian initiation (baptism, confirmation, Eucharist). Because it was part of initiation into the Church, it was not a matter of private piety, but of public worship. Therefore it was and remains normative. This is an intriguing ground-breaking study of value to RCIA teams, pastors, theology teachers and students, and Church offices.
