Book excerpt: In "On the Flesh of Christ," Tertullian delves into the profound mystery of the Incarnation, exploring the central doctrine of Christianity-the Word becoming flesh in Jesus Christ. With theological depth and fervor, Tertullian elucidates the significance and implications of this divine mystery, addressing questions of Christ's nature, purpose, and redemptive work. Drawing from Scripture and early Christian tradition, he unfolds the profound truths of the Incarnation and its impact on humanity's salvation. "On the Flesh of Christ" stands as a timeless testament to Tertullian's theological insight and his unwavering commitment to the truth of the Gospel.

Book excerpt: This was written by our author in confutation of certain heretics who denied the reality of Christ's flesh, or at least its identity with human flesh-fearing that, if they admitted the reality of Christ's flesh, they must also admit his resurrection in the flesh; and, consequently, the resurrection of the human body after death. They who are so anxious to shake that belief in the resurrection which was firmly settled before the appearance of our modern Sadducees, as even to deny that the expectation thereof has any relation whatever to the flesh, have great cause for besetting the flesh of Christ also with doubtful questions, as if it either had no existence at all, or possessed a nature altogether different from human flesh. For they cannot but be apprehensive that, if it be once determined that Christ's flesh was human, a presumption would immediately arise in opposition to them, that that flesh must by all means rise again, which has already risen in Christ. Therefore, we shall have to guard our belief in the resurrection from the same armory, whence they get their weapons of destruction. Let us examine our Lord's bodily substance, for about His spiritual nature all are agreed. It is His flesh that is in question. Its verity and quality are the points in dispute. Did it ever exist? whence was it derived? And of what kind was it? If we succeed in demonstrating it, we shall lay down a law for our own resurrection.

Book excerpt: The heretics against whom this work is directed, were the same who maintained that the demiurge, or the god who created this world and gave the Mosaic dispensation, was opposed to the supreme God. Hence they attached an idea of inherent corruption and worthlessness to all his works--amongst the rest, to the flesh or body of man; affirming that it could not rise again, and that the soul alone was capable of inheriting immortality.

This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Carne Christi (ca. 203-206) is a polemical work by Tertullian against the Gnostic Docetism of Marcion, Apelles, Valentinus and Alexander. It purports that the body of Christ was a real human body, taken from the virginal body of Mary, but not by way of human procreation. Among other justifications for the incarnation of Christ, it states that "the choice of 'foolish' flesh is part of [God's] conscious rejection of conventional wisdom" and that "Without true incarnation, there can be no true redemption... God must have flesh, in order to have a real death and real resurrection." (De Carne Christi, Mah edition). The work contains the phrase prorsus credibile est, quia ineptum est ("it is immediately credible--because it is silly" or "it is by all means to be believed, because it is absurd"), which is commonly paraphrased as Credo quia absurdum ("I believe because it is absurd").
