However few studies had been conducted on treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) using SBR. A pilot scale SBR had been installed to evaluate the performance of treating POME. The reactor is capable of treating up to 5 m3 of POME per day depending on the quality of incoming anaerobic liquor. Results obtained from the studies showed that the process could produce very good quality final discharge with BOD value which is consistently well below 50mg/L/ The system could also tolerate fluctuations of organic loads between operation cycles. SBR system therefore offers a promising process for the treatment of POME.

A two-stage RBC system was set up in the Environmental Engineering Laboratory at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The anaerobic RBC was utilised as the primary treatment unit and the effluent was further treated using an aerobic RBC. The main aims of this project were to start up the Rbc system, to monitor the anaerobic and aerobic system and to investigate the ability of the unit to treat POME. After full acclimatisation, continuous flow through the system exhibited reduction efficiencies of 96%, 71% and 80% for BOD5, COD and SS respectively. [Authors' abstract].

Book excerpt: The direct discharge of the Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) wastewater causes serious environmental pollution due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS) and biological oxygen demand (BOD). The conventional ways for POME wastewater treatment have both economical and environmental disadvantages. In this study, the potential of ultrasonic-assisted membrane anaerobic system (UMAS) was evaluated as alternative and cost effective method for treating POME wastewater to avoid fouling. The UMAS treatment efficiency was greatly improved by UMAS introduction. The membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface was significantly reduced. This research had proved that UMAS is the effective way to treat POME. The removal efficiency of COD was 95% with HRT of 6 days. The BOD removal efficiency was 71.59% while TSS removal rate was from 91 to 99.5%.The methane gas production efficiency was 94.14%.The UMAS treatment efficiency was greatly improved by UMAS introduction. The membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface was significantly reduced. This research had achieved the objectives by resolve the problem statement.
