Book excerpt: Cricket Music, Tessellation Figures & Notebook presents a series of new works by acclaimed New York painter Terry Winters (born 1949), in which he explores forms inspired by mathematical concepts such as tessellations, knot theory and similar shapes derived from natural and scientific realms. Winters' kaleidoscopic compositions of overlapping grids and patterns create complex pictorial spaces, and his use of transparent pigments allows the viewer to see, as the artist has said, "all the events that went into the making of the painting." Tessellation Figures refers to the process of creating a two-dimensional plane through the repetition of a geometric shape. The Notebook series (2003-2011) consists of collages of found images, layered on top of one another, which have provided the source material for several of Winters' recent paintings, and which affirm the enduring tension between abstraction and representation throughout his work.

Book excerpt: The telephone's insistent ringing at three in the morning snatched Sam Workman from dreamless sleep. "Hello," he mumbled. "This is a warning," said a digitally altered voice. "Leave Betterton now! If you don't, you won't live long enough to regret it." "Who is this?" Sam angrily demanded to a dead line. "Unknown name, unknown number," blinked the call identifier. "Coward!" Workman growled and slammed down the receiver. The call was the first episode in a conspiracy to force Sam and his business, B&W Concrete, out of Betterton or destroy them. Followed were attempts to oust B&W from two construction projects, a hospital addition and an engine plant, totaling $400 million in construction costs to yield B&W $10 million profits. Sam retains attorney Penn Roman to stem the tide of disastrous actions drowning B&W in a flood of claims of incompetency and fraud and more threats and violence against Sam, Penn, and Penns family. When a testing lab employee working on the projects disappears, and the newspaper prints libelous articles condemning B&W, Penn and Sam find themselves entangled in a web of greed, deceit, violence, and murder. Courageously, they face the schemers in an explosive and telling trial to the finish.

They started carrying furniture for the downstairs through a built-on porch. When the van was empty, the house's downstairs had in it: a black couch, brown dining room table with five brown chairs, three bookcases, a black Lazyboy, a rocking chair, two black chairs, a knick-knack shelf, a box of knick-knacks, three wall clocks, a nineteen inch TV, TV stand, one double bed, a freezer, and a cloth dresser. Harry and Lennie organized per room; living, dining, kitchen, and bedroom. A half an hour later, the full moving van again entered the driveway. Harry and Lennie started carrying furniture for the upstairs. Three roller-away beds, five dressers, one double bed, four black trunks, three brown writing desks, three four-shelved bookshelves, ten boxes filled with paperback books, four nightstands, and two-dozen suitcases filled with clothes. After carrying all of the suitcases and furniture upstairs, Harry and Lennie put one of each in the bedrooms and hall. Pouring with sweat the two sat down in the kitchen and each of them had a cigarette.

Book excerpt: The epic horrors of psychopathic mastermind Eddie Lee Sexton from the New York Times bestselling author who “knows how to dramatize true crime” (Elmore Leonard). For years, Eddie Lee Sexton ruled his large family like Charles Manson. The depraved patriarch dominated his ragged brood of twelve children mentally, physically, and sexually, and enforced every cruelty imaginable, from vicious beatings to raping his daughters and fathering their children. Finally, in 1992, Sexton’s eighteen-year-old daughter Machelle, seeking refuge in a women’s shelter, revealed the shocking, sordid details of her father’s abuse to authorities. As the law attempted to catch up to Eddie Lee Sexton, he moved his family to a mobile home in western Florida. Ultimately, Sexton’s efforts to escape prosecution led to two grisly murders in his own family. Yet Sexton’s sick genius almost helped him elude the justice he deserved. Lowell Cauffiel’s true-crime masterpiece vividly exposes the horrors of Eddie Lee Sexton’s psychosis and the shattered lives of those who survived. Includes sixteen pages of photos “An odyssey into American pathology . . . Deeply disturbing.” —Detroit Free Press “Incest, rape, murder, infanticide, torture, psychological abuse . . . House of Secrets is bedtime reading for devoted true crime fans!” —Booklist “A balanced and grimly engaging account of one of the weirdest domestic situations this side of the House of Usher.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: One by one, Boston's leading citizens are disappearing without a trace. When Hollywood homicide detective Frank Buchanan's estranged uncle becomes the latest victim, he turns to his resourceful, albeit lethally unbalanced friend, Daniel Rourke, for assistance. Cold-shouldered by the local authorities, the two friends embark on an off-the-books, undercover search of Beantown's sordid underbelly for Buchanan's uncle. The stakes are soon raised as the carefully choreographed, artfully mutilated bodies of the missing men and women begin to appear at various city landmarks. At each scene a cryptic note is found: 'Out of sight, out of mind.' In the final frantic moments leading up to the killers' explosive endgame, Daniel and Buchanan catch scent of their trail, following it deep into the underground labyrinth of a private gentlemen's club named The Colosseum, deeper still into a secret past long thought dead and buried, a past that everyone involved, Buchanan included, is loathe to exhume.

As the lines between reality and the supernatural blur, Mara races against time to stop a ritual that could bring about the end of days. But in a world where faith is tested and evil knows no bounds, the cost of failure is unimaginable. With the city—and perhaps the world—on the brink of apocalypse, Mara must decide how far she is willing to go to stop the darkness from consuming everything she holds dear. The Devil's Greenhouse is a gripping tale of suspense, where ancient horrors collide with modern-day heroism, and the fight for humanity’s soul begins.

Book excerpt: The mysterious death of a journalist pulls Washington fixer Joe DeMarco into a conspiracy of power and politics in “one of the best thrillers of the year” (Booklist). Author of House Witness, 2019 Edgar Award Finalist for Best Novel Days after claiming he had a lead on a story that would make Watergate look like a misdemeanor, a mediocre writer from the Washington Post is found accidentally drowned. But Joe DeMarco’s boss—the Speaker of the House—thinks there’s nothing accidental about it. Mostly because the reporter was on the trail of Senator Paul Morelli. Morelli is all but a shoe-in for the Democratic presidential nomination. But his golden boy public persona hides a monstrous character. Somehow, all of his sinister scandals seem to be cleaned up by a mysterious benefactor who stays just out of sight. Setting up a sting to catch the predatory Morelli, DeMarco thinks his job is done—until those who helped him with the sting start turning up dead. And unless he can uncover the powerful people who are protecting Morelli, DeMarco knows he’s next . . . In this chilling novel of unfettered power and final justice, Mike Lawson proves once again that he “has a true insider’s insight about real-world spinelessness, venality, and corruption that have taken the place of moral courage and true leadership on Capitol Hill” (The Washington Times).

Book excerpt: For Sure is among other things a labyrinth, a maze, an exploration of the folly of numbers, a repository, a defense and an illustration of the Chiac language. Written in dazzling prose — which is occasionally interrupted by surprising bits of information, biography, and definitions that appear on the page — Daigle perfectly captures the essence of a place and offers us a reflection on minority cultures and their obsession with language. It is also the continuing story of Terry and Carmen, familiar to us from previous works, their children Etienne and Marianne, and all those who gravitate around the Babar, the local bar in Moncton — the Zablonskis, Zed, Pomme — artists and ordinary people who question their place in the world from a distinct point of view that is informed by their geography, and by their history, politics, and culture. Masterfully translated from French by award-winning translator Robert Majzels, For Sure is the moving story of a family and a surprising, staggeringly original work that represents a corner of our country.

Book excerpt: Silent Woods By: Will Emley When Darwin Hall arrived at the farm, he could see Will Elliot’s pickup parked in a field entrance just north of Walnut Creek. Darwin stopped his Explorer on the road behind Will’s pickup. There was no activity around the pickup. He exited his Explorer to check Will’s pickup. The doors were locked. After waiting for a half hour, seeing no sign of Will, Darwin decided to walk in and check some of the stand locations. He had seen the locations on the maps that Will diligently maintained. Darwin knew that there were two stands located in the gravel pit west of the road and one more stand along Walnut Creek, east of the road. With flashlight in hand, Darwin walked along the edge of the field north of the creek towards the east fence line. The stand was located in the corner of the fence line and the creek. At the east end of the field, Darwin shined the light up in the trees trying to locate the stand. Seeing the stand, Darwin walked over to the tree. The stand was empty, and there was no sign that Will had been there. A work of fiction, Silent Woods tells of a deer bow hunter who arrowed a buck and blood trailed it into a large tract of public wildlife hunting area and was then shot and wounded, becoming a missing person in a thirteen-day survival ordeal.
