Book excerpt: This research will verify the existence of any relation between the homicide rate and the poor or insufficient social and urban infrastructure in peripheral neighborhoods in contrast with neighborhoods that are valued by the real estate capital. It is important to highlight that this research aims to the advent of a Citizen State, not a police state. For this reason, the following infrastructures will be examined: the number of schools, hospitals, theaters, bookstores and police stations. In Brazil, most theaters have public capital investment, that is why the “number of theaters” factor was taken into consideration in this research. The “number of bookstores” fator was inserted so that it could be possible to observe the influence of culture on the reduction of homicides. It is noteworthy that the number of homicides results from a complex problem in which many factors contribute to its occurrence. The purpose of this research is to verify only one aspect of the discussion about the motivations for the number of homicides: the presence of infrastructure in the territories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a systematic overview of large-scale housing projects, Massive Suburbanization investigates the building and rebuilding of urban peripheries on a global scale. Offering a universal inter-referencing point for research on the dynamics of "massive suburbia," this book builds a new discussion pertaining to the problems of the urban periphery, urbanization, and the neoliberal production of space. Conceptual and empirical chapters revisit the classic cases of large-scale suburban building in Canada, the former Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, and the United States and examine the new peripheral estates in China, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, the Philippines, South Africa, and Turkey. The contributors examine a broad variety of cases that speak to the building or redevelopment of large-scale peripheral housing estates, tower neighbourhoods, Grands Ensembles, Groβwohnsiedlungen, and Toplu Konut. Concerned with state and corporate policy for building suburban estates, Massive Suburbanization confronts the politics surrounding local inhabitants and their "right to the suburb."

Book excerpt: A fresh new e-book edition, focusing on the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals and the community. The second e-book edition of Child, Youth and Family Health builds its focus on the importance of a collaborative partnership between healthcare professionals and members of the community. This approach is vital in supporting, maintaining and strengthening individual and community health across a range of contexts and life stages. Child, Youth and Family Health 2e e-book begins by discussing issues and challenges in child, youth and family health, before addressing contexts for nursing and midwifery, all of which helps readers apply theory to practice. This community healthcare textbook offers additional insight into the importance of the healthcare professional’s role when working with children, young people and their families, and looks at practical approaches such as program development, supporting family transitions and mental health promotion. There are three new chapters: ‘Communication with children, young people and families – a family strengths-based approach’, ‘Acute illness: Care for the child and their family’ and 'Health promotion through early childhood' along with a range of clinical scenarios, research highlights, practice highlights and critical questions and reflections. Written by authors who are nurses, midwives, early childhood educators and academics, along with a respected team of contributors and editors, Child, Youth and Family Health 2e provides an engaging perspective on the fundamental challenges and issues affecting the health and wellness of infants, children, young people and their families in Australia and New Zealand. Clinical Scenarios integrated throughout to provide context for practice. Research highlights provide examples of the most recent research and evidence based practice. Practice highlights feature up-to-date examples of best practice, policies and procedures in Australia and New Zealand. Key Points summarise the main issues in each chapter. Critical questions and reflection feature at the end of each chapter as a tool for tutorials. Useful Resources provide weblinks for up-to-date data, statistics, organisations and programs. Extensive references provide for further reading and research. Chapter 5 ‘Communication’ completely revised with a ‘family strengths’ approach. New Chapter 8 'Health promotion through early childhood'. New Chapter 9 ‘Acute illness: Care for the child and their family’. Completely revised and updated with current statistics and data. Inclusion of contemporary public health policy. Inclusion of contemporary legislative and regulatory frameworks for health professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This theological treatment of the Book of Judges is fresh, original, imaginative, scholarly, and relevant. In his commentary E. John Hamlin pays careful attention to the structure and meaning of the text of Judges, and he elucidates the "risk" that Israel faced in the Promised Land -- the risk of living among the "Canaanites," of adopting their ungodly practices and their way of organizing society (the way of death). Hamlin's characterizations of the various liberator judges are particularly thought-provoking. Each chapter concludes with "Perspectives" on the text -- reflections on the ancient context of the Judges accounts, insights from the Asian cultures among which Hamlin has lived and worked, and applications to modern situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual health is now seen as multi-dimensional, a product of complex interplay between biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. This book brings together 34 expert Australian practitioners and researchers to provide a comprehensive, authoritative, up-to-date, and stimulating perspective on sexual health. In numerous and significant ways the book differs from its predecessor-volume, published in 2005. Chapters are now grouped in to five parts: § Sexual health in Australia; § Foundations for sexual health; § Sexual health in clinical practice; § Sexual health in specific populations; and § Prevention and promotion. All original chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and updated. Six new chapters are included, on: § Sexual health in society; § Contraception, and options for unintended pregnancy; § The legal environment of sexual healthcare practice; § Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people; § Health promotion; and § Prevention strategies. Chapters on sexual health in adolescence and in older adults have been expanded. A section on refugees is now included (with sections on homeless youth, sex workers, and prisoners) in a chapter on the sexual health of ‘other vulnerable populations’. This book is one-third longer than its predecessor-volume. For tertiary-level students of nursing, medicine, public health, health promotion, and sexology, this new book will continue to be an ideal textbook. For healthcare practitioners working in reproductive health, sexual health, maternal and child health, and many other specialist fields, it will be an invaluable first reference.
