Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a modern and elegant introduction to engineering fluid mechanics enriched with numerous examples, exercises and applications. A swollen creek tumbles over rocks and through crevasses, swirling and foaming. Taffy can be stretched, reshaped and twisted in various ways. Both the water and the taffy are fluids and their motions are governed by the laws of nature. The aim of this textbook is to introduce the reader to the analysis of flows using the laws of physics and the language of mathematics. The book delves deeply into the mathematical analysis of flows; knowledge of the patterns fluids form and why they are formed, and also the stresses fluids generate and why they are generated, is essential to designing and optimising modern systems and devices. Inventions such as helicopters and lab-on-a-chip reactors would never have been designed without the insight provided by mathematical models.

Book excerpt: This book discusses novel methods for planning and coordinating converters when an existing point-to-point (PtP) HVDC link is expanded into a multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) system. It demonstrates that expanding an existing PtP HVDC link is the best way to build an MTDC system, and is especially a better option than the build-from-scratch approach in cases where several voltage-sourced converter (VSC) HVDC links are already in operation. The book reports in detail on the approaches used to estimate the new steady-state operation limits of the expanded system and examines the factors influencing them, revealing new operation limits in the process. Further, the book explains how to coordinate the converters to stay within the limits after there has been a disturbance in the system. In closing, it describes the current DC grid control concept, including how to implement it in an MTDC system, and introduces a new DC grid control layer, the primary control interface (IFC).

Book excerpt: Signal Flow Analysis provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of signal flow analysis. This book discusses the basic theory of signal flow graphs and shows their relation to the usual algebraic equations. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of properties of a flow graph. This text then demonstrates how flow graphs can be applied to a wide range of electrical circuits that do not involve amplification. Other chapters deal with the parameters as well as circuit applications of transistors. This book discusses as well the variety of circuits using thermionic valves or vacuum tubes. The final chapter deals with the application of the flow graph to find the equation of motion of an electrical meter movement where the feedback is mechanical. This book is intended to be suitable for the undergraduate engineering students, in a middle of a degree or diploma course, or for the practicing engineer who wishes to obtain a speedy solution to an electrical problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Container Terminals (CT) operate as central nodes in worldwide hub-and-spoke networks and link ocean-going vessels with smaller feeder vessels as well as with inbound and outbound hinterland transportation systems using road, rail, or inland waterways. The volume of transcontinental container flows has gained appreciably over the last five decades -- throughput figures of CT reached new records, frequently with double-digit annual growth rates. Stimulated by throughput requirements and stronger competition between terminals settled in the same region or serving a similar hinterland, respectively, cost efficiency and throughput capabilities become more and more important. Nowadays, both terminal capacity and costs have to be regarded as key indicators for CT competitiveness. In respect of this steady growth, this handbook focuses on planning activities being aimed at “order of magnitude improvements” in terminal performance and economic viability. On the one hand the book is intended to provide readership with technological and organizational CT basics for strategic planning. On the other hand this book offers methodical assistance for fundamental dimensioning of CT in terms of 'technique', 'organization' or 'man'. The former primarily considers comprehensive information about container handling technologies representing the state of the art for present terminal operations, while the latter refers to methodological support comprising in particular quantitative solutions and modeling techniques for strategic terminal decisions as well as straightforward design guidelines. The handbook includes an introductory contribution which gives an overview of strategic planning problems at CT and introduces the contributions of the volume with regard to their relationship in this field. Moreover, each paper contains a section or paragraph that describes the impact of findings investigated by the author(s) for problem-solving in long-term planning of CT (as an application domain). The handbook intends to provide solutions and insights that are valuable for both practitioners in industry who need effective planning approaches to overcome problems and weaknesses in terminal design/development and researchers who would like to inform themselves about the state of the art in methodology of strategic terminal planning or be inspired by new ideas. That is to say, the handbook is addressed to terminal planners in practice as well as to students of maritime courses of study and (application oriented) researchers in the maritime field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of the experiment was to determine the effect of regularization of approach traffic in time, place, and sequence upon the safety and efficiency of a terminal system. Enroute flow-control facilities were simulated by arrivals at the terminal boundary. The terminal system was manned by a two-man pattern-feeder control team. Six pairs of experienced USAF controllers participated. The control zone included two landing fields and each controller handled aircraft destined for each of these fields. Data were recorded for a total of 2880 movements of mixed types. The results and conclusions of the experiment are as follows: 1. Traffic input regularization in time, place, and sequence relative to the controller who accepted the traffic had an insignificant effect on terminal system performance. 2. Human controllers can provide the flexibility necessary to accommodate widely varying input entropy."--Abstract.
