Book excerpt: Based on a four-year study, Manga High explores the convergence of literacy, creativity, social development, and personal identity in one of New York City’s largest high schools. Since 2004, students at Martin Luther King, Jr., High School in Manhattan have been creating manga—Japanese comic books. They write the stories, design the characters, and publish their works in print and on the Internet. These students—African-American and Latino teenagers—are more than interested in the art and medium of manga. They have become completely engrossed in Japanese language, culture, and society. Manga High is highlighted by reproductions and content analysis of students’ original art and writing. An appendix includes guidelines for educators on starting a comic book club.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lAU Symposium No. 78, "Nutation and the Earth's Rotation," was held in Y~ev, USSR, from 23 to 28 May, 1977. The Organizing Committee included E. P. Fedorov and R. O. Vicente (Joint Chairmen), W. Fricke, J. Kovalevsky, P. Melchior, N. Pariisky, M. Rochester, C. Sugawa, G. Wilkins and Ya. Yatskiv, who presided over the Local Organizing Com mittee. The meeting was sponsored by Commission 19 and co-sponsored by Commissions 4, 8, and 31. There were 114 registered participants from 14 countries. The main topics covered were as follows: the specification of nutation in the lAU system of astronomical constants; determination of forced nutation and nearly diurnal free polar motion from astronomical observations; expected use of lunar ranging data and long baseline interferometers for precise measurement of the nutation terms; models of the internal constitution of the Earth as the basis of a new theory of nutation; the effect of the ocean and liquid core on the rotation of the Earth; and the interaction between Earth tides and nutation.

Book excerpt: During the period April 25th to May 10th, 1984 the 3rd Course of the International School of Advanced Geodesy entitled "Optimization and Design of Geodetic Networks" took place in Erice. The main subject of the course is clear from the title and consisted mainly of that particular branch of network analysis, which results from applying general concepts of mathematical optimization to the design of geodetic networks. As al ways when dealing with optimization problems, there is an a-priori choice of the risk (or gain) function which should be minimized (or maximized) according to the specific interest of the "designer", which might be either of a scientific or of an economic nature or even of both. These aspects have been reviewed in an intro ductory lecture in which the particular needs arising in a geodetic context and their analytical representations are examined. Subsequently the main body of the optimization problem, which has been conven tionally divided into zero, first, second and third order design problems, is presented. The zero order design deals with the estimability problem, in other words with the definition of which parameters are estimable from a given set of observa tions. The problem results from the fact that coordinates of points are not univocally determined from the observations of relative quantities such as angles and distances, whence a problem of the optimal choice of a reference system, the so-called "datum problem" arises.

Book excerpt: The precise determination of the figure of the earth and its exterior gravitational field requires the solution of the geodetic boundary value problem (GBVP). Recently, a whole series of new measurement techniques has became available, in particular air- and spaceborne methods. They will make its solution much more complete and accurate and will contribute to a better understanding of ocean circulation and of the earth's interior. The book consists of contributions from leading scientists presented at an international summer school. It covers all aspects of the solution of the GBVP, from a mathematical basis via geodetic modeling to its relationship with advanced measurements. It provides three foundations to determine the geoid at a 1-cm precision level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book content corresponds to a course of the International Summer School of Theoretical Geodesy held every 4 years under the sponsorship of the International Association of Geodesy. This particular course, that was given at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, has been dedicated to the theory of satellite altimetry as a response to the increasing need of scientific work in this field due to important recent and forthcoming space mission. The course was conceived to supply a good theoretical basis in both disciplines, i.e. geodesy and oceanography, which are deeply involved in the analysis and in the use of the altimetric signal. The main items of interest are the physical theory of ocean circulation, the theory of tides and the ocean time-variability, from the point of view of oceanography and the orbit theory, with particular regard to the formation of the radial orbital error, the so-called cross over adjustment, the analysis of geodetic boundary value problems, the integrated determination of the gravity field and of the radial orbital error, from the point of view of geodesy. All these arguments are treated from the foundation by very-well experts of the various fields, to introduce the reader into the more difficult subjects on which advanced research is currently performed. The peculiarity of the book is in its interdisciplinarity as it can serve to both communities of oceanographers and geodesists to get acquainted with advanced aspects one of the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial mechanics aims to predict the motion of every real object in outer space, no matter what causes changes in its orbit. The motion of most planets and natural satellites can be successfully described by conservative celestial mechanics and problems can be studied within the formalism of Hamiltonian mechanics. The few exceptions which experience significant non-gravitational effects call for only very small corrections to the purely gravitational theory. All satellites experience non-gravitational perturbations to their orbits. However, factors such as the relatively high area-to-mass ratio of spacecraft compared with that of even a tiny asteroid significantly increase the relative effect of non-gravitational to gravitational forces on the orbits of artificial satellites. When the orbital tracking is carried out by very accurate techniques, the need arises to model, or at least to estimate, the effects of phenomena such as radiation pressure from solar light and from Earthshine or drag caused by neutral and charged particles. This book presents the basic ideas of the physics of the main non-gravitational perturbations and the mathematics of the methods required to compute their orbital effects. The authors convey to the reader the relevance of the different problems that need to be solved to achieve a given level of accuracy in the orbit determination and in the recovery of geophysically significant parameters. The book will enable readers to assess for themselves the possible geodetic uses of given space missions, or maybe to propose a new one, or to propose a combined geodetic use for a mission envisaged for other purposes. The Authors Andrea Milani is a mathematician, Anna Maria Nobili ad Paolo Farinella are physicists. They began working together in celestial mechanics and satellite geodesy in 1978, when they formed, with others, the Space Mechanics Group now based at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa, Italy. By travelling to many research centres in Europe and in the USA, and by presenting several proposals for space-based experiments to the European Space Agency and to the Italian Space Program, they have learned how to assess the difficulty of an orbit determination and how often the problem is due to poor modelling of very-subtle non-gravitational effects, In this book they try to make their know-how available to others, as well as teaching some basic tools of celestial mechanics on the basis of their experience in basic research. A Milani and A M Nobili also work on the stability of the solar system, P Farinella also studies the dynamics and physics of the asteriod belt.
