Philosophers have tended to read Descartes's seminal work in an occasional way, examining its treatment of individual topics while ignoring other parts of the text. In contrast, John Carriero provides a sustained, systematic reading of the whole text, giving a detailed account of the positions against which Descartes was reacting, and revealing anew the unity, meaning, and originality of the Meditations. Carriero finds in the Meditations a nearly continuous argument against Thomistic Aristotelian ways of thinking about cognition, and shows more clearly than ever before how Descartes bridged the old world of scholasticism and the new one of mechanistic naturalism. Rather than casting Descartes's project primarily in terms of skepticism, knowledge, and certainty, Carriero focuses on fundamental disagreements between Descartes and the scholastics over the nature of understanding, the relation between the senses and the intellect, the nature of the human being, and how and to what extent God is cognized by human beings. Against this background, Carriero shows, Descartes developed his own conceptions of mind, body, and the relation between them, creating a coherent, philosophically rich project in the Meditations and setting the agenda for a century of rationalist metaphysics.

Arbogast Schmitt's book sets itself this until-now-unfulfilled task, comparing the arguments for a life based on theory and one based on praxis in order to provide a balance sheet of profit and loss. The Jews say that their Word of God was given by God to Moses face to face; the Christians say, that their Word of God came by divine inspiration; and the Turks say, that their Word of God (the Koran) was brought by an angel from heaven. Each of those churches accuses the other of unbelief; and, for my own part, I disbelieve them all.As it is necessary to affix right ideas to words, I will, before I proceed further into the subject, offer some observations on the word revelation. Revelation when applied to religion, means something communicated immediately from God to man.

These two camps seemed deadlocked until Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason endeavored to show that the most accurate theory of reality would be one that combined relevant aspects of each position, yet transcended both to arrive at a more fundamental metaphysical theory. Kant's synthesis sought to disclose how human reason goes about constructing its experience of the world, thus intertwining objective simuli with rational processes that arrive at an orderly view of nature.

If the good is generally a harmony of experience with feeling what is the rational good? In accordance with our general definition of the rational we shall expect the rational good in the first place to be consistent throughout. That is to say, whatever is reasonably held good must not tend to clash with anything else that is reasonably held good. Just as two rational judgments must not contradict one another, so two rational purposes must not conflict with one another, and if two kinds of experience, both apparently good, are found to conflict, it becomes necessary to seek some means of reconciling the contradiction. Of the problem thus set to the practical reason we shall speak presently. But let us observe now in the second place that negative consistency is not enough. Whether we think of the judgment "This is Good" as an assertion or as theexpression of an impulse-feeling it must, to be rational, have a ground, and the ground must be universal. The end or act or feeling that is good as such must be good wherever and in whomsoever found, and that which is good under given conditions must be good wherever these conditions obtain. But further, if we have to find grounds for these universals--grounds for our grounds--we shall be pushed along the same line of criticism as before in dealing with cognition.
