Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally sensitive problem that is growing worldwide. Sludge production is increasing whilst previously accepted methods for disposal are coming under pressure or even being phased out altogether so there is now an urgency to find cost-effective and innovative solutions that appease environmental and public pressures. The purpose of the conference recorded in these proceedings was to review the range of alternative disposal/recycling options for sewage sludge. The alternative uses considered are in land reclamation, forestry, compost and soil production, landfill, incineration, and energy and resource recovery. The papers presented include recent research findings and technological developments, as well as operational implementation of schemes, showing that beneficial re-use of sludge can be entirely compatible with a cost-effective and environmentally sensitive approach to sludge disposal.

Book excerpt: There is a continued demand for well-trained and competent hydrogeologists, especially in the environmental sector. For decades, Fetter’s Applied Hydrogeology has helped prepare students to excel in careers in hydrogeology or other areas of environmental science and engineering where a strong background in hydrogeology is needed. The text’s long-standing tradition as a vital resource is further enhanced in the fifth edition by Kreamer’s added expertise. Stressing the application of mathematics to problem-solving, example problems throughout the book provide students the opportunity to gain a much deeper understanding of the material. Some important topics include the properties of aquifers, the principles of groundwater flow, water chemistry, water quality and contamination, and groundwater development and management. The addition of new case studies and end-of-chapter problems will strengthen understanding of the occurrence and movement of ground water in a variety of geological settings.

Book excerpt: The influence of compounds in the environment on the chemistry of plants is a topic which has economic and scientific implications of global importance. Selected presentations in this symposium covered several topics within this immense field, inclusive of air, soil, and aquatic sources of the compounds. As demonstrated in Chapter 4 by O'Keeffe et al. we have not restricted the discussion solely to negative aspects of anthropogenic compounds. Nor could we begin to cover comprehensively all major classes of environmental compounds in the air, soil or water that may have an effect on the phytochemistry of plants. Our intent was to focus on some of the timely and well publicized environmental constituents such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, acid rain, and others, to provide an authoritative publication specifically related to environ mental modifications of plant chemistry. The concept of this symposium originated with the Executive Committee of the Phytochemical Society of North America in 1983. It was brought to fruition during July 13-17, 1986 on the campus of the University of Maryland at the annual meeting of the PSNA through the efforts of the Symposium Committee composed of James A. Saunders and Lynn Kosak-Channing. Financial support for this meeting was provided by the Phytochemical Society of North America, as well as by generous contributions from E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The Organizing Committee, consisting of J. A. Saunders (Chair), J. M. Gillespie, L. Kosak-Channing, E. H. Lee, J. P.

The contributions to the publication are made by some of the most qualified professionals in the world and present the information in a clear and objective manner. The readers will find the information very useful and will be helpful in the design of new facilities and organic recycling programs. The manager or interested member of the community does not have to have a rigorous training in science or technology. - Up-to-date contributions by some of the most knowledgeable and respected leaders in the field - Clear and objective presentations, which are arranged in such a way that it is not necessary to read the entire book - Information is supported by data, tables and references - Covers most important aspects of the process including a brief historical review - May be used by teachers as well as practicioners in the field
