Book excerpt: Fibres usually experience tensile loads whether they are used for apparel or technical structures. Their form, which is long and fine, makes them some of the strongest materials available as well as very flexible. This book provides a concise and authoritative overview of tensile behaviour of a wide range of both natural and synthetic fibres used both in textiles and high performance materials. After preliminary chapters that introduce the reader to tensile properties, failure and testing of fibres, the book is split into two parts. Part one examines tensile properties and failure of natural fibres, such as cotton, hemp, wool and silk. Part two discusses the tensile properties and failure of synthetic fibres ranging from polyamide, polyester and polyethylene fibres to carbon fibres. Many chapters also provide a general background to the fibre, including the manufacture, microstructure, factors that affect tensile properties as well as methods to improve tensile failure. With its distinguished editor and array of international contributors, Handbook of tensile properties of textile and technical fibres is an important reference for fibre scientists, textile technologists and engineers, as well as those in academia. Provides an overview of tensile behaviour of a wide range of both natural and synthetic fibres Examines tensile characterisitics, tensile failure of textiles fibres and factors that affect tensile properties Discusses mircostructures and each type of fibre from manufacture to finished product

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the salts contained in sea water are trapped in sea ice upon freezing. They form liquid and solid inclusions in a systematic pattern. The amount depends upon temperature and salinity. A detailed table of phase relations is given and a general theory is derived to show how the internal cavities may affect the strength of sea ice. The general theory leads to specific models. The principle of ring tensile strength tests is explained and a series for evaluation is given. Test data lead to a substantiation of theoretical principles and to an illustration of several hypotheses concerning the effect of solid salt inclusions upon strength. Observed sea ice phenomena are explained on the basis of internal structure. (Author).

This book was released on 1965 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites were studied. Composites were made of copper, copper- 2 percent chromium and copper- 10 percent nickel reinforced with various volume percents of uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The composites were tested in tension at temperatures up to 1800 degrees F.A comparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber - copper alloy composites, representing soluble systems, was made with tungsten fiber - copper composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. The effects of alloying on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites was also studied. A linear relation existed at elevated temperatures between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content for all the systems investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into the tungsten fiber.
