Book excerpt: Advanced manufacturing processes such as near-net-shape forming can reduce production costs and increase the reliability of launch vehicle and airframe structural components through the reduction of material scrap and part count and the minimization of joints. The current research is an investigation of the processing-microstruture-property relationships for shear formed cylinders of the Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Ag alloy 2195 for space applications and the Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy C415 for airframe applications. Cylinders which had undergone various amounts of shear-forming strain were studied to correlate the grain structure, texture, and mechanical properties developed during and after shear forming.

Book excerpt: A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.

Book excerpt: Current industrial design practices place emphasis on properties in order to ensure that a product provides structural integrity. Mechanical properties are largely influenced by the direction of testing with respect to the wrought microstructure. In aluminum alloys the properties sensitive to direction are strength, ductility, and fracture toughness. In this study, the Double Ligament Tensile (DLT) test was used to evaluate the tensile properties and anisotropy of premium quality cast hypoeutectic and hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys of cylindrical cross section, and age-hardened commercial wrought aluminum-magnesium-silicon and aluminum-zinc-magnesium plates of limited section thickness. Comparisons reveal that the DLT test results accord well with standard conventional test data. The difference in tensile properties observed with direction of testing is attributed to the well-developed mechanical fibering that exists in the wrought alloys examined. The transverse brittleness observed in these alloys is due to the presence of particle stringers, grain boundary precipitates, and unhealed porosity.

Book excerpt: Tensile properties were evaluated for four aluminum alloys that are candidates for airframe applications on high speed transport aircraft. These alloys included the Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloys C415 and C416 and the Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Ag alloys RX818 and ML377. The Al-Cu-Mg alloys CM001, which was used on the Concorde SST, and 1143, which was modified from the alloy used on the TU144 Russian supersonic aircraft, were tested for comparison. The alloys were subjected to thermal exposure at 200 F, 225 F and 275 F for times up to 30,000 hours. Tensile tests were performed on thermally-exposed and as-received material at -65 F, room temperature, 200 F, 225 F and 275 F. All four candidate alloys showed significant tensile property improvements over CM001 and 1143. Room temperature yield strengths of the candidate alloys were at least 20% greater than for CM001 and 1143, for both the as-received and thermally-exposed conditions. The strength levels of alloy RX818 were the highest of all materials investigated, and were 5-10% higher than for ML377, C415 and C416 for the as-received condition and after 5,000 hours thermal exposure. RX818 was removed from this study after 5,000 hours exposure due to poor fracture toughness performance observed in a parallel study. After 30,000 hours exposure at 200 F and 225 F, the alloys C415, C416 and ML377 showed minor decreases in yield strength, tensile strength and elongation when compared to the as-received properties. Reductions in tensile strength from the as-received values were up to 25% for alloys C415, C416 and ML377 after 15,000 hours exposure at 275 F. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The welding of structural materials, such as aluminum alloys 6063, 6061 and 6005A, does have an adverse influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties at locations immediately adjacent to the weld. The influence of heat input, due to welding and artificial aging, was investigated on aluminum alloy extrusions of 6063, 6061 and 6005A. Uniaxial tensile tests, in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy observations, were done on the: (i) as-provided alloy in the natural temper, (ii) the as-provided alloy artificially aged, (iii) the as-welded alloy in the natural temper, and (iv) the as-welded alloy subject to heat treatment. The welding process used was gas metal arc (GMAW) with spray transfer at approximately 140-220 amps of current at 22-26 volts. The artificial aging used was a precipitation heat treatment for 6 hours at 360oF. The aluminum alloys of the 6XXX series contain magnesium (Mg) and silicone (Si) and are responsive to temperature. Optical microscopy observations revealed the influence of artificial aging to cause change in both size and shape of the second-phase particles present and distributed through the microstructure. The temperature and time of exposure to heat treatment did cause the second-phase particles to both precipitate and migrate through the microstructure resulting in an observable change in strength of the material. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted for desired specimen thicknesses for sake of comparison. Section 6.4.2-2 of the 2010 Aluminum Design manual discusses provisions for mechanical properties of welded and artificially aged aluminum light poles, fabricated from aluminum alloy 6063 and 6005A. A basis for these provisions was the result of older round-robin testing programs [2, 3]. However, results of the studies were never placed in the open literature. Hence, the focus of this study was to determine the expected mechanical properties of welded and artificially aged 6063, 6061 and 6005A aluminum alloys and publish the results. Tensile tests revealed the welded aluminum alloy to have lower strength, both yield and ultimate tensile strength, when compared to the as-received un-welded counterpart. The impact of post-weld heat treatment on tensile properties and resultant fracture behavior is presented and briefly discussed in light of intrinsic microstructural effects and nature of loading.

Book excerpt: This research was concerned with a practical approach to the design of an improved age-hardenable aluminum alloy for moderate temperature application. The process involved extensive empirical research, theoretical simulation and modeling, calculated phase diagrams and first principle calculations and analytical techniques. Microstructure characterization and analytical transmission electron microscopy were employed to refine the development of the quaternary Al-Cu-Mg-Ag phase diagram Differential scanning calorimetry and electron diffraction were implemented to investigate the microstructural evolution of the ternary alloys and to validate calculated equilibrium phase boundaries. Energy dispersive spectroscopy was also used to illustrate the effect of trace additions on the phase boundaries that are important for the thermal stability of this class of alloys. Computer simulation & modeling were used to identify the microstructure that will result in the optimal combination of mechanical properties. Unavailable parameters were calculated from first principle atomistic modeling. The major objective of this research program has been to illustrate the use of modeling and simulation in alloy design and therefore aid in the early insertion of new high performance materials.
